stupid nasty ultragrrl thread

hi mod folks,

is there any chance someone can delete, lock or at the very least, retitle the "I want to shoot Ultragrrl in the face" thread on ILM? i don't think threats of gun violence against real live people who will probably read this, particularly young single women who live in big scary cities, should be tolerated on our boards.

also, thanks for doing such a great job, mod people. it's a thankless one, but i'd like to say that you do it very well.

Sorry, I personally feel like this falls under 'criticism of public figure' rules. It is stupid and nasty but most people on the thread point that out. She is an adult who has made the choice to be a writer and live in an urban area, and while we're all our neighbor's keeper, I think you should respect that decision.

i disagree - if it were called "Ultragrrl is a very bad writer" it would be fine; if it was "I want to shoot Nicole Kidman in the face" it would still be creepy, but slightly mitigated by the fact that Nicole Kidman would most likely never read it. but you don't agree, which is fair enough. thanks anyways for taking the time to respond.

not that anyone asked, but as an ilm mod, i'm siding with dave on this one. this thread crosses the boundary of internecine journo trash-talking. i read it as an unfunny attempt to be tongue-in-cheek, but the likelihood of ultragrrl reading ilm is fairly high, and she could very reasonably choose not to see it that way.

without having read the whole thing, i move for retitling the thread and possibly locking it. thoughts, teeny?

I stand by my original statement--I didn't want to say it so explicitly but I think the mod request comes off as a little overprotective and condecending, but if you know this woman and know that she would be freaked out (which I would understand if she knows the person who started the thread), I see why you would want to mod the thread. When I was a DJ, my husband would be furious when I got criticized/hate mail/whatnot, but as a professional, I had to learn to let it roll off my back, and that's the perspective I was coming from.

BUT THAT SAID--I absolutely respect what you're saying and your greater familiarity with the issues and wouldn't say anything more if you locked/retitled the thread. That's what these threads are for, for a bit of debate and clarifying the issues, and I'm just offering my perspective/decision.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i don't know her, and it doesn't seem like anyone else on the thread does, but i think that actually contributes to the argument for altering the thread title.

i agree that hate mail is fair game w/r/t any public figure but this thread title is ridiculously aggressive, even by ilx's standards. that said, i don't think the content of the thread is particularly objectionable (again, by ilx's standards) so i'm going to mod the title and leave it at that.

Haha. How silly. Yes, I'm going to hunt Ultragrrrl down and shoot her in the face with my non-existent gun. Geesh.

Stick. Your Ass. Remove.

Don't lock -- discussion has turned mostly-normal, and retitling has cleared up some of the creepy threatening aspect.

don't worry nabisco, this is the full extent of mod intervention

Thanks for the re-title. I had quickly blocked the thread out of my mind because of the ugly title, and the only reason I went back and found out that it had turned interesting was because the title changed.

This is bad. Context has been lost. Shame on you.

Thanks for the re-title. I had quickly blocked the thread out of my mind because of the ugly title, and the only reason I went back and found out that it had turned interesting was because the title changed.

Usually you can know that a thread is "interesting" because it has this next to the title - "(226 new answers)".

Also, this is setting the precedent for changing the board name from "I Love Everything" to "Well, I Guess I Pretend To Like Most Things, Really."

for who? are you really worried about future googlers not getting jokes, jon?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Maybe we could offer to shoot them in the face.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, but I just think any thread titles about shooting any real, living person in the face is bad form. Call me humorless.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Hyperbole, public persona, etc.

Cool Hand Luuke (ex machina), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

i apologize if the mod request seemed condescending - it wasn't meant like "she's a gurl, we should play nice." my point was merely that the misogyny + violence of the thread title was a particularly nasty combination (and as others have pointed out, the attacks that female crits like Ultragrrl and Amy Phillips have been far more vicious than those that male critics get - i'll take "S!m0n R3yn0lds is a gobshite" over blount's "(hu(k 3ddy needs to lay off the jailbait" any time).

also, i don't know her personally, but she has definitely read ILM - there was a nasty thread about her once before which she posted about on her blog.
