Email notification checkbox

Is there any possibility of getting rid of this option?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I'll stick my hand up and second Dan's motion here. I fail to see the use of it, and the possibilities of it being abused by spammers are obvious.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

It's great for unregistered users who just want to post a stupid question and have people send them answers. Although I bet they don't expect that their thread will generate 2000 smartass posts - all of which get emailed.

hehehehehehe....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

haha yeah, that's kind of awesome though. I love the idea of Sharonda Hair Dye getting an inbox of ilx memes.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I thought I took a look at what gets sent out back in the I'm a Werewolf Hoooowl phase. I seem to remember it being a non-issue in terms of spamharvesting.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking more in terms of:

1. Naive person posts thread guaranteed to attract silliness and turns on email notifications.

2. ILX does its 300 response thang.

3. Naive person starts complaining to ISPs about getting spammed by a messageboard.

4. Everyone involved gets a minor headache to deal with that could have been avoided by getting rid of the option in the first place.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

ok i "fixed" the marchant thread by making her email in the initial post NOSPAMed and so they're just gonna bounce from now on.

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

true enough, that is a good point, but apparently if they have enough brain to come back here, there is a way to shut if off again under settings. i know some people here do make use of the feature as intended though (esp. Sean C on his mobile) so it does still have a certain usefulness. perhaps the best thing to do would be to have an "are you sure type - this could mean a lot of email" type warning on the checkbox or inclusion of removal instructions (a link) on each email notification itself. but maybe that's a lot easier to say than do.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

How do you shut it off?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

ok, took me five seconds to find, under settings it lists exactly which threads you have subscribed to, and there are checkboxes beside each and an option to either unsubscribe or update the email address it gets sent to (i'm assuming that feature works!) so it seems not unreasonably complicated to unsubscribe.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

but i guess it might not show you that option if you've never subscribed to a thread?

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Haha no, it doesn't!

Do you get a settings page if you aren't a registered user?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

nope. (although you could have checked that as easily as i) the original set up is flawed. looks like the feature should be limited to registered users only or include that unsubscribe link, but again, that fix is probably more easily talked about than done. i'm sure Zac's gonna love me for finding extra code-work while he's trying to enjoy being on vacation.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Maybe emailed replies to threads should only be sent if the last message was over 24 hours ago? That makes the feature more useful.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Interestingly also, once you unsub to a thread, it still shows it listed in your settings as if you have which has confused me a couple of times.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

is there a way to do it so it doesn't email you if you haven't clicked through and looked at unread messages yet? ie it emails you on first reply, but no more until you read what's been posted in the interim?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

that would be a whole lot of nothing posted in the interim i'd expect, as we'd likely be poxy fuled into oblivion by all the database strain. complication of the feature makes dan's first post idea look a whole lot more attractive.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a good idea to ditch the checkboxes.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

rss feed if you're too lazy to check-in.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm really not trying to make things MORE complicated under the hood!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone actually recieved an email from ilx in the last couple of days?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I have, about superhero blow jobs.

I love the e-mail notification checkbox. I appreciate that I might be the only regular ILXoR that uses it, but I really love receiving thread responses by e-mail. Partly this is so that I can more readily reas stuff off-line, but also it means that I know if some thread I started ages ago has suddenly come back to life.

I would be very sad if the e-mail notification checkbox was taken away.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

poor marissa. i heard her song the other day.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

she has several, ken c. some of them are better than others.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I use this function, too, partly because I want to make sure I'm not missing new posts on threads that I've started. I don't check the entirety of the board regularly, so I often miss it when my threads get reactivated, but the email notification reminds me to check them.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 4 August 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like it might be useful for some people if they could get e-mail notifications even for threads they didn't start (although this could overwhelm the poor server).

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 5 August 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

you can theoretically subscribe to threads other than ones you start, although it only works for me if I log out and do it (it then makes me log in again, before you start worrying about spambots subscribing to everything).

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

RSS feeds, y'all.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
I just noticed that DV's point here is right: trying to subscribe to a thread by any means other than starting it is screwy.
