Search by user failing

I'm often searching for messages/threads with "stet" in the name field and today's date in the date field so I can find all the threads I've been posting in. But in the last few days it always returns nothing. Is something broken?

stet (stet), Monday, 8 August 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

(This on ILE btw)

stet (stet), Monday, 8 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

it is because we all have so many failings

jimmy glass (electricsound), Monday, 8 August 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

The archive probably hasn't been backed up in a few days. in the meantime, you can enjoy the other posts that you've made this month.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 8 August 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

bump - i've just noticed this too

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Search by user failing

Now this is a function we need :-P

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Your search on "sloth" matched 100 posts.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

bump. is the archive-backing-up always this infrequent?

stet (stet), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Hoorah, it's back!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Harooh, it's gone again.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

the mysql 'slave' server is fuXoRed

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

just wondering if there was any update on this? searching is now ... even more of a pain in the ass than it was before :) :) :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Do you see an update?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

i searched for one

stet (stet), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

see teeny's link above to the thread on the mod board. no i see no sign of this being attended to :-(

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 12 September 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

yes, i've read the link. but obviously i can't post there. for all i know, this might have been dealt with, then broken again.

hence my polite "any update" question - which didn't need a snippy reply, noodles. if the answer is "no, sorry, nobody's had a chance", that's fine.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Try saying 'no, sorry, nobody's had a chance' over and over and over again and see if you get snippy with stupid questions.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I get tired of typing "don't be a fanny" over and over and over again

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

(I don't, really ; ) )

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

stupid questions

i'm sorry. why is it a stupid question? am i a mod? no. do i know the inner workings of ILE? no. was it a reasonable question? yes.

FYTP.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Its a stupid question because you could quite easily see if it's working on your own, without asking around and being spoon fed information.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

which is why i said: "is there any update", rather than "hey, is this working?" i mean, it's obviously not working. what i was interested in was whether there was any news on when it might be fixed. is that an unreasonable question? no. did i demand it was fixed? no. have i, on several different occasions, stuck up for the ILE moderators in the face of mass opprobrium? why, yes!

however, seeing as you're obviously hard at work somewhere being an unnecessarily obnoxious little bag of toss, i shan't waste any more of your oh-so-valuable time. pip fucking pip.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

I sense a singalong!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

A bag of toss?

I'm moving up in the world.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

a bag of toss is better than a fanny, I'd say

you are a fanny

In the states fanny means your bum...

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know you could post images here!

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

for a second i thought: "why is there a picture of that bloke macca from edinburgh university there?" then i remembered that he went off and became a big (cough) star. it still kinda takes me by surprise when i see him on telly.

and does he remember the kindly student newspaper editor who let him write awesomely funny lunacy (until we had to pull it due to too many complaints)?

er, i dunno. he might, actually. he was a really, really fucking nice bloke.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

So, er, this is still broken. There are no updates in the slave thread. Is anything being done about it that I don't know about it, or is it just being left unfixed?

stet (stet), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Are you fucking serious?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Too fucking right, because not only did you not answer GF's question, there's no answers anywhere else. Not that I could search to find them anyway.

Oh, unless your example "no, sorry, nobody's had a chance" was true in this instance as well, but since it's surrounded with vitriol, it's hard to tell. Hard to imagine you ever saying sorry, either.

stet (stet), Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Actually, why are you such a twat about this? It's not like either of us were asking stupid questions -- unless you presume it's obvious that it will be fixed and think that wondering just when that will be is unforgivably rude to teh poor taxed mods.

stet (stet), Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

it's because he volunteered to do all this shit so you should just be grateful if stuff happens and never ask

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

wtf. :(

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 15 September 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

this is all so unnecessary.

my "no i see no sign of this being attended to" should be enough.

i'll put it in bold i see no sign of this being attended to

everyone go back to sleep

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

i see no sign of this being attended to

er, yes, neither do I. Or GF. The question is willit be attended to, or should we just give up?

stet (stet), Thursday, 15 September 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

see you next tuesday

dr gary busey (dr g), Friday, 16 September 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Stet, have you considered asking for your money back?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Just to get this thread back on topic, can we add a feature to look up posters by their most noticeable character flaw?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

so it's still not working, is anyone actually going to bother to fix it?

rothh, Friday, 16 September 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

can we add a feature to look up posters by their most noticeable character flaw?

do you mean searching by username?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

more like Doofus 3000 hurry up and fix it wankers lol

howdoi, Friday, 16 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

RJG you are a starmenace

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Stet, have you considered asking for your money back?

No, but I've considered offering money to someone who could fix it. I may sound like I'm being demanding, but I'm trying not to be -- I'm not all foot-stamp fix-it fix-it, I just want to know if it's likely to be fixed.

I know nothing about the techy workings of ILX or who twiddles the bits, so genuinely can't tell from the "no, I don't see it being fixed" type replies above. If it isn't going to be fixed, I'll just work out some other way of tracking threads, probly involving bookmarks.

stet (stet), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

the search function is working, but it is working from an out-dated version of the ILX database with nothing added to it since early september. this is because of a server crash at that time. i have received no information about the crash from the people who know, nor about the re-synching of the database so that it's database is up to date.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

someone must have traduced Stet, for without having ...

thanks for that, tho I'm still wondering how to find about if it'll be re-synced. These "people who know" ... do they ever come here? can they be asked? Can I send them chocolates and cake?

stet (stet), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Shitty wankstains, I didn't realise it was out of date for *all* searches. Hence my double "September 2005 in Iraq" thread.

stet (stet), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Hi everybody.

QUIT USING THE ILX SERVER'S SEARCH FUNCTION

brought to you by lateral thinking. you're welcome

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

that doesn't seem to work too well, unless i'm using it stupidly (which is entirely possible) - it only finds one post by me in the last month, for example.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I don't think anybody's ever accused Google of being comprehensive. It also only indexes the first bunch of lines of any given thread. Better for searches by post title, I guess. Sorry!!! Wrong thread!!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

yes. a search for "grimly fiendish" gives me five results. and that's it. and a search for a post title containing the word "brat" or "brats" gives no hits either (that kids thing being the thread i was trying to find when my patience with the search function finally ran out).

obviously i run the risk of incurring mr noodles's wrath for even daring to ask, but ... alan, i don't suppose anyone's given you any more information about re-syncing, have they?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

i hope this isn't too provocative (i'm just curious, and i find ilx search v useful) - who are these people?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

hello

a 12-foot lizard in a woodland clearing (grimlord), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

and a search for a post title containing the word "brat" or "brats" gives no hits either (that kids thing being the thread i was trying to find when my patience with the search function finally ran out).

With things like that I sometimes find using the

are MOST kids raised as super-indulged noisy brats these days?

bit of the search function works, if you have a rough idea when it was last discussed.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Um, put that post in any order you like :-/

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

good thinking, gerry!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

i hacked the "search by IP" to work on the master server. i'll revert it when that gets fixed :-(

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

jesus what the fuck wass wrong with ile today? i don't understand how some of those things continue the way they do.

can we make a "sin bin" board and move all this crap there? we could call it "i love typing in absolute shit and clicking submit" ILTiASaCS - ill tea ass sacks!

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

It's back, but only up until a few days ago (IE the above link still shows nothing). Is it literally being backed up to the search slave by hand?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

oh jebus. no not by hand, but the process that syncs it is obv failing fairly regularly

over to andrew...

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

do you use the search EVERY day just to check posts in the last 24 hours or something ;-)

seriously thanks for flagging this up tho

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

No, I just noticed because I did a search and some stuff in the last month came up, so I checked the link above.

It might not be a terrible idea for a mod to click that link every 24 hours, mind :)
