Looks like this thread is or will turn into trolling.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's harmless.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

So far yes, but the Kenan and Orbit comments pasted there make me wonder what the intentions of the thread starter are.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

And now he's pasting some of my posts too, how predictable. Since Orbit and Kenan and I are "Noise Dude enemies", I fear this might turn into another flame war.

i think he means to ridicule them, tuomas.

I don't think moving it would be right

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

even if it does become a flame war, why does it need deleting/moving/etc? do we delete all flame wars now?

N_RQ, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

As I understand it the purpose of the A/D board is to provide a space where posters can work out their complex feelings for one another in relative privacy, NRQ.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

haha tom.

It looks like someone has splurged the thread into oblivion anyway.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Can it please be moved? It's destroying the new answers blog.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

The last image splurge on that thread is displaying images, even though I have them turned off in my settings.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Any sufficiently large number of consecutive images within a single post will bypass the images off thing. Actually, there's also a way to get the img tag to ignore the parser and show your image regardless but I can't remember what it is (maybe the src value isn't in quotes?).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I realised after I posted above - the image tags go across off-screen for quite a way.

I was going to cut & paste the whole thread into a hacker text convertor, and post the results as a new answer on the thread, but I can't be bothered. Too much effort for minimal laffs.

Can someone once again remind me why ILE wasn't made registered-users only?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

And that would have stopped a thread like this very ignorable, stupid one I dont know why anyone's worrying about, why again?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really care about someone trying to imitate me for whatever reason, or someone posting silly pictures, but it's kinda stupid that threads that might otherwise interesting turn into playgrounds for these anonymous posters, like the one Amon linked to. This is why I don't think the option of making your threads registered users only isn't enough. Trolls can still start threads of their own (like the "Best Posts" one) or hijack seemingly innocuous ones that weren't made reg-only.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

kurt broder (dr g), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas the thread Amon linked to has "joke answers acceptable" IN THE QUESTION!

Why shouldn't trolls start threads? You don't have to look at them, and it's not as if the two words "BEST POSTS" are at all offensive anyway. If someone posts a personal attack on you, you can ask for it to be deleted. If you start a thread, you can lock it to registered users. These two things I still think strike the best balance in terms of allowing ILE to offer something for everyone who uses it, not just a particular group.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but I think most people will click on threads like "Best Posts" or "The Oldest Internet Page" not expecting personal commentary, and once you've read it, the damage is already done, whether or not it's deleted. Personally, I don't care about that shit enough to ask for it's removal, but I respect the views of those who do. Also, lately the sheer amount of anonymous asshattery has made ILE a rather bothersome read, which I don't think is a good thing for anyone. And it has made me - and probably others too - wary of posting anything personal to ILE, which I think is a real loss for the board.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

it's a tragedy

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

lately the sheer amount of anonymous asshattery has made ILE a rather bothersome read, which I don't think is a good thing for anyone.

so don't read it? also, people generally don't like it when you tell them what's a "good thing" for them.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, that was badly worded, what I meant is that there must be others who find this shit tedious too. And "if you don't like it, don't read it" is a bit of an easy answer: if I don't like it, can't I express why I don't like it, and maybe suggest what I think would make it better? I've posted here for two and a half years now, and I think lately things on this board have changed for the worse, and if this is the direction the board is going to, yeah, I might stop reading it, but I just wanted to point out that I think this possible change of tone would be a real loss for ILE.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

You know, if it's *just one thread* then it's easily avoidable. But when a troll logs in overnight and dribbles half a dozen threads with insane amounts of image splooging all over the new answers, it's irritating and disruptive.

Also rather hard to avoid when it splooges up the blog view. (Even if I had images turned off, massive long posts of nothing but 22k of quotes do rather destroy the blog view.)

"If you don't like it, don't read it" is fair advice, but what about when it's forced on you this way?

The Brocade Fire (kate), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

"forced"

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

if I don't like it, can't I express why I don't like it, and maybe suggest what I think would make it better?

you can suggest until you turn blue, but it doesn't mean people have to listen to you. the truth is, most people don't care, and are happy using ilx for whatever suits them and then getting on with their lives. there's no "moral majority" here, just a couple of PTA moms who want to speak for everyone else and tell them how they feel. here's a thought: try not taking the noise dudes so seriously, let them have their little haxor art projects and "ilxor celebrity roast" threads, and if anyone else has a problem, let them take it up themselves with the powers that be.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

try not taking the noise dudes so seriously, let them have their little haxor art projects and "ilxor celebrity roast" threads

That's the standard Noise Dude answer isn't it? "Can't you take a joke?" I'm sorry, maybe I'm just a tight-assed bore, but the way I see things is that calling someone a "bitch" or a "fattie" or a "faggot" is something that can just be disregarded (unless the one so called is in on the joke, of course). The problem with a "live and let live", "everyone gets different things out of it" attitude towards ILE is that the current trolls (whoever they are - I'm not saying it's the Noise Dudes, or just the Noise Dudes) don't want to let those who may get some personal things out of ILE live in peace.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas, you are the troll here. Trolls are stirring up trouble to make you act unreasonable!

~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:23 (nineteen years ago)
That's the standard Noise Dude answer isn't it? "Can't you take a joke?"
"try not taking them so seriously" != "can't you take a joke." it means "there are lots of things in this world to take seriously; why expend so much energy on this?"
The problem with a "live and let live", "everyone gets different things out of it" attitude towards ILE
...is that you just want an ILE where you can get what YOU want out of it.
the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:32 (nineteen years ago)
you'd think he'd be satisfied with idme where he and kate and orbit can ban and delete everyone else but them to their hearts content but no he wants EVERY board to be like that.
