why? see this thread:

Can we start a music tech/theory board?

I think enough people are into it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 29 September 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

*personally* i think there are more than enough boards dealing with these very topics across the net - is there really a need for another one here? i'm just a lone voice in the wilderness, but if i wanted to discuss this stuff i'd seek out an existing board with an existing userbase where this is on topic..

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 29 September 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

if people are actually bewildered as to where this sort of thing is the main topic of discussion i would love to share details of other boards etc etc

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 29 September 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

I've been on many of those boards. I don't like them. I like the disparity of people here and there's such an established sort of language of ILX that would suit this I think.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 29 September 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

what's wrong with keeping it on ILM?

faith popcorn (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 September 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

(and don't say "non-musos will feel alienated.")

We tried to start a technical board, at least for guitars, but it's not doing very well:

http://ilx.wh3rd.net/newanswers.php?board=12

I'm not sure if that kind of thing would satisfy your needs (sorry, have not read the request thread) or if you need something wider than just gear and equipment discussion...

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 29 September 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

I've often thought about starting a "sound design" board, focussed on recording techniques and synthesiser programming techniques. Partly because it would be kind of interesting to me, and partly in the hope of attracting a few people I like from other forums & lists to here. Like Dan, I'm not that keen on most of the other music tech/technique lists I see, many of them are really slow & a pita to use, and there are a couple of really obnoxious individuals who kind of mess it up. I'm actually really keen to do this at the moment if anyone "higher up" fancies kicking it off.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 29 September 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

I think the higher-ups with the actual power to do this are all busy or away (that's Alan, Noodles, Andrew).

Kate's suggestion on the ILM thread of renaming and repurposing ILGuitar sounds sensible to me.

In general though I'm a lot more wary of splitting ILM than I am of creating ILE sub-boards, but that's just me: I don't read the equipment threads and I wouldn't read this new board so it's a simple point of principle.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 29 September 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Renaming & repurposing ILG sounds good to me. Is the person who started the board still around?

Gear threads on ILM do tend to get lost in the clutter a bit, and I can't remember the last time I saw a recording/sound technique thread.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 29 September 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

The mysterious "Peejis"? I don't know! I suspect not.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 29 September 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

There was a suggestion at some point that Pash be made mod of ILG.

I would be very happy to have ILG renamed/refocused to be a technical music board. Because, quite honestly, I don't spend much time on ILM any more - yet I would still like to read and discuss technical issues with regards to the creation of music. It's very hard to spot and keep track of technical threads in the morass of ILM. We've had a couple of things like "what sequencer should I use?" but they get lost.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 29 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Just posted on the ILM thread, then realised there was a thread here. I would spend every waking hour on a music tech board. Terrible for my productivity, but ah well.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 29 September 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Just to be obvious, I am completely for the repositioning of ILG :)

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 29 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

in a world with seperate boards for "Ask a Drunk" and "I love WWE" and "Aeon Flux" and things I don't even understand, I'm suprised to see anyone think I Love Making Music is a bad suggestion. It's just an easy way to compartmentalize, there seems to be plenty of interest, so why not? If nobody is posting to I Love Guitars, rename it and maybe people will move their Reason/Analog Synth etc threads there and they may get more focus. Maybe not, but I hardly see why it's such a bad idea.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

I would second the idea to just rename I Love Guitars to something like I Love Making Music, no one really uses ILG anyway and it wouldn't increase the number of boards at all.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Who can actually do the renaming?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, remaking I Love Guitar as I Make Music would be great. Other music making boards tend to be closed minded for whatever reason, only based around one type of equipment, sequencer, type of music etc and always have overbearing know-it-alls on in a way that I can't imagine an ILM one would.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 29 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

As one of the few regular posters to ILGuitar (hello all.), I say rename away. I'd like the live sound question/recording aspect added, because that's the other thing I do.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 29 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

What about people like me who want to periodically geek out on basic music theory?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

We will burn you because you are a witch.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

that's fine. anything involving the making of music would fit.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

We will burn you because you are a witch.
Yes, your funny scales betray you.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

those damned infernal pentagramic scales

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

so is this a general yes to renaming ILG to "I Make Music"

has peejis popped up with an opinion on this?

should i move the ILM Can we start a music tech/theory board? thread to ILG?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so because, as pointed out, a lot of people don't read ILG right now.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

xxpost - you mean pentatonic? the tritone is really the one that invokes he who cannot be named.

amon (eman), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

ok, well how about the ppl proposing this start up yet another thread of this title on the ILG board in case anyone there not looking elsewhere (unlikely though that may be) are unaware of this plan

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Yes, rename it Alan, and we'll announce on the ILM thread. Motion seems to be carried.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 30 September 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

ok, but i'd still feel better leaving Anyone have objections to this board being renamed I Make Music? going for a bit longer before renaming. maybe do it this weekend. i can always UNDO the rename if anyone chimes in with an objection.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 30 September 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

I think I am excited about this.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 1 October 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

You'll all go off and plot over there, I know it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 October 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Ned. If you read every third letter of each post, you will discover that WE ARE ALL OUT TO GET YOU ;)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 1 October 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)
