Flagging threads as "ignore"

How difficult/resource intensive would it be to add an "ignore" flag for registered users to use on threads so that they can either:

a) be loaded be a completely seperate new answers page;
b) have an "(ignore)" keyword put on the thread title so that you have a visual reminder that irritating things were happening on the particular thread and you didn't want to inadvertently click on it anymore?

why is this neccessary?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

It's not. It would be nice to have, though, because then when I got irritated with a thread I could mark it as ignore and when I scrolled through the new answers later on I wouldn't have to try to remember which threads I thought were annoying and which ones weren't when I am looking for something to read.

(hah!)

I think this has come up before and the answer was "too resource intensive" but maybe Jon offered to write a Greasemonkey script to do the job?

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Actually, this could be managed client-side, couldn't it?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

can we have an "ignore user" function?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Firefox users can probably do this on their own with Platypus, though it's a little tweaky.

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

your brain has an ignore user function. when you see a post by a user you don't like, ignore it. that's client-side right?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Some people might have to upgrade their brains before that function will work.

it was mostly so people could ignore me.

are we ever gonna get the "x number of unread posts" thing back again? not being pushy, just curious

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Apparently it was a huge server drain. As long as "later" still works, I don't really find knowing how many posts are unread is that helpful, although I wouldn't kick it out of my browser, either.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 9 October 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's not u and k, obviously, but it's nice.

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Sunday, 9 October 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I thort there was a possible middle-ground of a "contains unread posts" hack that wouldn't specify howmany. if so, that would be all the handiness i need.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 10 October 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

since we're talking about upgrades .. how about an optional setting checkbox that makes href links display in the message text? (instead of remembering to check the status bar.)

so ILX the Book displays as ILX the Book (http://www.Kittens!.org)

..like, just asking, is all.

No! How will we goatse.cx?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

It's doable through CSS, even.
