i think it's because youtube urls begin with https — just take out the s and it embeds.

in order to embed, the URL has to begin with:
http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=[YoutubeID] (obv remove the space between '?' and 'v')
Youtube URLs that don't begin this way, such as https URLs, or URLs that have a different parameter first other than v, or URLs with a random '#' character inserted into the URL before 'watch', will not automatically embed.

the "problem" is that Youtube URLs used to reliably follow that pattern, but now the parameters are likely to be all jumbled up, plus they are just as likely to be SSL URLs (https), so the pattern matching is now imprecise

The easiest way I've found to get an ILX-compatible url is to click 'Share' in YouTube and paste the shortened youtu.be link into the address bar. Once you've navigated to the shortened url page, the embedable url will show up in the address bar. That method has never failed me.
