Hey, is there any way to turn this function off?

Someone's following the Watercooler thread by email. Not only do I not want my email address harvested (major increase in SPAM lately) but I think it's a bit... weird to be following a personal gossip thread like that by email.

Can we disable email on certain threads?

It's not within my capability as a mod to turn it off for just one thread (or to turn it off in any other way, for that matter). I'm not sure what's possible from the back end. I don't think this function will give the subscriber any information that they wouldn't normally be able to see as a logged-in user (and you do have to be registered to use this function). I know there was a discussion of this function in the past and some people do use it to keep up with threads when they can't visit ilx at work, for example.

OK, cool. Fair enough.

Maybe I should just change my email that I use for ILX.

AFAICR teeny is right. it gets the user as much as just reading as a reg-user, so there's nothing new to worry about.

remember if you ARE going to change yr public e-mail address, you need to keep it either genuine, or add a private e-mail address, as you will be e-mailed a new scrambled password when you make that change.
