if people took him at face value and he turns out to have been conducting a 'social experiment', what's the cost? momentary embarrassment, maybe. i'll take momentary embarrassment over being too cynically timid to be kind to a stranger.

Judging from what we know at this point (he appears to be safe at this point btw) this was not a joke/fake, and I look forward to seeing him back on ilx when he is ready. And yes, that is all the information I am willing to share in the near future.

Trayce, his rambling on that thread is a lot like the rambling of an ex-roommate of mine who stopped taking his meds and had a manic episode. I'm pretty sure it's real.

This bugs me for some reason. The guy clearly had issues, he wasn't well. Several people, including myself, tried to intervene and help him.

I dealt irl with someone going through a (possibly totally different) situation like this, I would have been skeptical too, and that experience is 100% why I jumped on this right off the gate, with the huge and more important assitance of a uk ilxor that deserves a gold star for his help (much more than I) but shall go nameless.

campari was a totally innocuous british poster who was best known for posting a really wacky salad recipe once--nothing to suggest he was unwell or any kind of internet performance artist

anyway, it's a credit to ilx that we took this seriously and props to the mods and anonymous uk poster

Also credit due to several other mods and posters contributing and helping on that thread. Basically thx ilx in general for being good people throughout.

It was crystal clear someone was highly confused and troubled and that it wasn't a troll. I am glad so many posters stepped in and tried to help, instead of treating it like a 'parade of red flags'...

So yeah, jjj otm: yay ilx and the mods for dealing with this.

It was just the attention to elaborate and well spoken asides - the books in his bag and whatnot - in a ludid and almost parodid manner compared to the incoherence of the overall story. Stuff like " The driver got out a blunt (I believe they're called)" and ", including an original addition of a fine C.P. Snow book of essays on a random-ish selection of characters of the period" while elsewhere clearly knowing drug slang. It was like Pinefox does Tarantino, I dunno I found it odd.

OK the shit a bit further down is more problematic, granted. Its the first lucid part that gave me pause. Anyway you guys seem to know who this person is, based on what you're saying, so carry on.

My Dad has had episodes like that too - weirdly detailed in the paranoia but otherwise completely confusing and incoherent - glad the mods can soothe all our worried souls because it did make me quite sad and frustrated that there was so little that I could think to do :(

Well done all round. I had considered calling 111 and giving them the address given in the thread (mods - might be worth deleting that info now), but I wouldn't have had a clue what to say to them, so gold stars all round to those who did help in any way. I also have a family member who is also paranoid and delusional to almost the same level, but it's completely understandable that it would seem false and weird to others, and also that others may be wary of "saying the wrong thing" and thus stepping back.

yeah several of my friends have been going through similar things (it's like a weird version of that phenomenon where you reach a certain age and all the people you know start getting married, except that all my friends seem to be having psychotic episodes or drug problems). I vomited on the updatess thread about this the other week but it's pretty distressing and yeah, campari's posts looked very familiar to me.

I have to say, it's been my impression that the internet is very much not a good thing for people in the middle of one of these episodes: it allows them work themselves up in an unhealthy manner, ppl start trolling &c; so it's encouraging to see an instance where the internet has been able to help to some degree.

I apologize for some of my petty sniping, hope the guy is in a better place now
