those posts were amazing. terrifying, yet amazing

I doubt there are many people on ILX foolish enough to take that advice but you never know who's reading and I'm still really uncomfortable about it remaining up there. Taking it down seems eminently sensible, I've killed the whole stream of posts.

I don't know about how one should interact with people who've had paranoid/delusional episodes in the recent past, but is it a great idea to make the thread look as if his posts were never there? Would a note saying something like "moderator edit to remove potentially harmful suggestions" mean too much of a risk of engaging him in discussion about it?

Okay that makes sense - zapping the whole lot was the quickest and easiest course of action but nothing's deleted permanently.

didn't get to see the posts in question but am 99% sure matt did the right thing, wish i had a zap button myself for every time i run across a "here's something i half-remember from what a friend with a doctor in the family told me once" posts

You could probably find a better wording. But I think, given that he already feels himself to have been subject to some kind of conspiracy, and it must be a horrible feeling to think that you can't trust your own memories (and if everything seems equally unreal then who knows which version of the truth you'll settle on), it would be unwise to not be as clear as possible about the fact that 1. he wrote some posts 2. they were taken down because they offered potentially dangerous advice that ilx moderators did not feel comfortable with the site hosting.

well I personally reckon that there's a helluva lot of spurious-to-downright-insane advice on ILX and deleting all of it would take longer than Matt DC has evenings off

yes, it's in a sensitive area with a smaller hazard threshold than most, but its wild subjectivity should be obvious from the tone and the copiousness of its narrative

people are free to choose how they deal with their demons - those with the curiosity to plough through C G&T's meanderings would presumably also have the intelligence to construct an opinion regarding their applicability towards themselves, most probably an aversive one

this strikes me as nanny-statism of a kind. not ILX's house style ime.

It's a good job you don't have any say in this then, really. Most ILX posters in the past have not offered detailed instructions to things that may kill you/do serious damage to your mental state. I know full well that 99.9% of posters would never even think of acting upon it but that's beside the point.

Agree that it was reasonable to delete, even if it was unlikely that anyone would take his advice seriously enough to come to harm.

Hope CG&T gets some help soon. Hard to watch him suffer publicly (even if anonymously and so well written).
