Newfound Slott junkies: there's a 5 part Spidey / Human Torch mini coming out early next year (starting in January, I think)?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

they either do it wrong (yeah, easy for me to say) or they cut bait before giving the new concepts a chance to take hold.

Or both!

I miss Quesada's long-abandoned promise to minimize new books and especially new solo books, which he seems to have respun as "except for miniseries and really good stuff" (if your intent is just to limit output to "good comics," do you really need a promise more specific than that?) I think he gets way too much criticism, as Jemas did when he was around (and I think the criticism is mostly because he makes himself a more public figure than his predecessors did, and because no one had any real expectations of Marvel for a number of years before he stepped in), but that one's exasperating.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
Slott Machine talks about She-Hulk.

"I've seriously been toying with the idea of pitching a four issue 'Awesome Andy' mini to the guys at 'Marvel Age.' Four done-in-one stories for all ages about what Awesome Andy does on his weekends and days off. Kind of like Curious George stories. Like, 'Awesome Andy Goes to the Zoo' or 'Awesome Andy and the Treasure Map.' What do you guys think?"

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 22:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I just got this TPB and I really dig Awesome Andy. Too bad it's only a matter of time before a Byrne-a-like wipes out all this fascinating development in favour of some retarded shite.

Vic Fluro, Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Was it Thor -- it must have been Thor -- where Titania showed up acting totally contrary to how she was being portrayed in Deadpool, where she was a regular, necessitating the reveal that she was "actually" Copycat all along? I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen with Awesome Andy. I'd be disappointed as hell, though.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 3 December 2004 00:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I just got the trade too!
I've read the first story and part of the second. Holy crap is it ever good! Holy, holy crap.
I actually laughed out loud at the comic books as legal documents because of the CCA. Oh man. I hate myself for not reading this before.
This makes two Marvel books I like and they both star lawyers!

Just wandering by - YEAH! She Hulk is GRATE! This month they DEAL with every single She-Hulk Continuity "problem" EVER with ELEGANCE and HUMOUR and BRILLIANT-NESS - the whole involvement in Avengers: SORTED, without in any way contradicting what was in that OR everything in the main series so far! Also had MUCH jokes about using comics as legal documents, also logical guest characters, also CHARACTER! DEVELOPMENT! and also a CLIFFHANGER that's PROPER.

It really is very very very good indeed - and his Spiderman/Human Torch is BRILL as well.

MJ Hibbett, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Slott's gonna be doing a JLA (not FKAJL either) run later this year!

I really like the Spidey/Torch thing, but I think it would have been better if they had run it on newsprint. I think the effects they're going for with the colouring and inking don't translate to this newfangled glossy paper.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Sounds like that JLA run might not be happening, since Slott's since signed an exclusive with Marvel, but Juan Bobillo will be returning to She-Hulk for the revamp!

Regarding issue #2 (of the new one): it would have been a damn sight better twist if the artist had been told beforehand that all of the jurors were supposed to be from 2004. Unless a suspiciously high number of them were into Civil War re-enactment.

SPOILER FOR MOST RECENT ISSUE UNLESS MOST RECENT ISSUE CAME OUT TODAY IN WHICH CASE I HAVEN'T READ IT YET

I've been excited about Two-Gun Kid showing up, because although not many people know Matt's not just a gunslinging honorary Avenger, he's also a Harvard-educated lawyer, I'm betting Slott does.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:17 (eighteen years ago) link

No doubt!

I totally thought Starfox was the Avenger-in-stasis, tho, & have had to delay my Starfox-joy for 2 months, which is surprisingly hard!

GIVE SLOTT A SPIDER-MAN TITLE PLEASE! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

DAMN IT PLEASE!

SLOTT IF THEY OFFER A SPIDER TITLE: ACCEPT IT PLEASE DAMN IT

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Remember when Busiek had Spider-Man: The Hidden Years or whatever it was called? Slott should have something like that -- something in the 1980s Black Cat, Black Costume, Puma era, which is pretty much right before everything got weird.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, he should write an Avengers book set at that time, too, right before Roger Stern left (iirc?) -- before Dr Druid joins the team, the Wasp/Starfox/Captain Marvel/Black Knight team. With all that BK-Wasp crush action!

I think I'm just saying Slott should write all the Marvel books from the Shooter era of my childhood. Slott's Beyonder Follies! Slott's Iron Man in Red And Silver Armor! Slott's Cloud And Andromeda -- Remember Them? Guest-Starring Firebird.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:26 (eighteen years ago) link

He should just get his own imprint where he can do nothing but fill-in-the-gaps style stories like he did in Spidey/Torcho, and TY TEMPLETON PLEASE.

i want to read this stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Go pick up the She-Hulk trade! Or both of them, I don't know if there's a second one out yet. The Spider-Man trial issue is still my favorite, I think.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Slocki, also read: Spider-Man / Human Torch: I'm With Stupid (which Huk mentioned, & will rightfully mention @ the drop of a hat). It's Slott doing boffo Webhead & Flamehead team-ups from various eras in Marvel history - the early years, the college years, the Spideymobile 70s, the post-Beyonder 80s, and today!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I have got to stop pimping shit in parlance that assumes the reader knows, for instance, what "post-Beyonder" means.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I really want to find my Matchbox Spideymobile.

But yeah, Slott's Spidey/Torch is well worth getting, and I don't think Huk had read much Spidey (right?), so its appeal doesn't rely on memories of those eras nearly as much as I thought it did.

It's like if you subtract Geoff Johns from Kurt Busiek, you have Dan Slott. Or something.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Watch out - creator math is dangerous stuff.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

(right?)

Correct, however, I have seen every single episode of the 60s Spider-Man cartoon several times (because we didn't have cable TV until I was about 8). And, the Spider-Man therein correllates well enough to the Spidey/Torchy version (especially in the first two issues) that I was hooked. PARRRRR-KER!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, slocki!

There are TWO FULL ISSUES of She-Hulk available online. One's @ MileHighComics.com, and one's @ Marvel.com - I think Marvel.com is hosting #1 of the 2003/4 series.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:08 (eighteen years ago) link

ooh! is that stuff in the trade? what's in the trade?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I think there are two trades? The first trade has the first 6 issues (of Slott's first volume), and the 2nd has the final 6 issues (of Slott's first volume). Slott-Hulk v2.0 is up to #4.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Exactly.
I got the trade and then started reading by the issue, missing just one (just before the cosmic justice storyline).
The first trade, is super-awesome and essential (and contains the Spidey story), everything is pretty great, but not AS great (art team changed).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:46 (eighteen years ago) link

BONUS: if you buy v2.0 #3, you get 100 PAGES OF SHEXSHY SHULK ACTION. Of course, 48+ of those pages are reprints of Savage She-Hulk #1 (mega ungh - if John Buscema actually needed proof that he belongs in Heaven, this be it) and Sensational She-Hulk #1 (more ungh than I remembered).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:38 (eighteen years ago) link

The first "ungh" is bad & refers to Stan Lee's "work" - John Buscema, however, can do no wrong.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Savage was better than I remembered! But I think this speaks only to how bad I remembered it being. The Hulk comics of the same time -- if I'm remembering right when it came out -- were at an ebb, too.

Sensational was a disappointing reread, yeah. The comedy's about as subtle as Mad magazine, and I'm not saying subtlety is the essence or requisite of comedy, but ... ungh.

they should!! or ultimate for that matter, why not?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

1) Because that'd really cut into JMS' paycheck.
2) Because having 2 "fun" Spidey titles in the regular Marvel Universe (I'm counting PAD's as "fun") would be one too many.
3) Because editorial dictates are Slott's Kryptonite.
4) Because he thinks Spidey's new costume is pants.
5) Because he's slated to start work on a Marville relaunch.

Now I really regret not nominating JJJ for the best characters poll. I don't know why this constantly delights where the Thing just occasionally amused, but it really does.

Yeah, that issue is pretty hilarious. I'm a fan of the drink-spittin' page.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Morris Walters being her dad, of course (I didn't get this first time)

There's a lot of talk about his Spiderman above, and I like the way that his JJJ is the opposite - a lot of dumb and crazy stuff has happened to Peter Parker over the last 40 years, so you basically have to pick and choose or end up burying him under the weight of it. Whereas with JJJ the more you pile on the funnier.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

That's sort of the advantage of supporting cast vs. stars.

Should I continue this thread to talk about the Tas Mas vehicle. Or go to MCU.
Anyway, quite deeply fun. I do like a bit of Tas Mas. She's awfully good. & I'm sue she loves being called Tas Mas .
Well anyway, glad this is another good tv show from Marvel.
Was i seeing a LatinX element in the credits. Interesting if so.

Stevolende, Friday, 19 August 2022 09:34 (one year ago) link

THat is to say, looking at end credits I was thinking there was LatinX presence in the crew etc, & pretty female.
Which is good.
Hoping that inclusivity and actual diversity is rising. I was watching a lot of the Film Fatales webinars a couple of years ago which seemed to indicate it was. not sure how clear a lens that would be though. May be its own gaze or something.

Now seeing that Head Writer is Asian American. which is cool in itself.
