I've become a real King believer the past year

Nhex, Friday, 11 August 2017 19:47 (seven years ago) link

I loved it but wish King had tried a *teensy* bit harder to make it accessible to new readers.

Also I hope/assume loveable supporting character *redacted* isn't actually dead

Not really enjoying the new King story on Batman (except the Kite man oneoff) which is a shame as the art kills whenever it's not David Finch

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 11 August 2017 22:12 (seven years ago) link

Throughout the debut issue of Mister Miracle, the new 12-issue limited series from superstar team Tom King, Mitch Gerads and Clayton Cowles, two words recur:

“Darkseid is.”

Those words, colored white and in contrast to a stark black background are bone-chilling at best, truly harrowing at worst. As the issue progresses, they become more defining on the page, darting around a nine-panel grid, slowly, but surely occupying more and more panels. It’s a testament to exactly how good Clayton Cowles is as a letterer that these words alone are enough to invoke a sense of feeling trapped.

Glad I've been preordering it (haven't read it yet), based pretty much entirely on how much y'all have talked up King. Which I guess makes it the first mainstream DCU book I've bought since Multiversity (although I'm not sure to what extent either book really counts as mainstream DCU).

i kinda hate any repetitive bullshit in comics for the sake of pretense (full page black, double page spread recaps) and the "darkseid is" stuff is egregious but the new miracle man isn't half bad. needs a few more issues to tell.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Saturday, 12 August 2017 04:58 (seven years ago) link

I enjoyed the issue but sic’s quote there is indeed lol

METAL! It reminds me of a *slightly* more readable 90s Jim Lee comic

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 17 August 2017 20:01 (seven years ago) link

Not as good as those Justice League backups in Cave Carson, though

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 17 August 2017 20:03 (seven years ago) link

man the ads for metal make it look like the absolute worst...

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Friday, 18 August 2017 14:00 (seven years ago) link

i went to my local and bought #1, sounded silly enough

Nhex, Friday, 18 August 2017 17:39 (seven years ago) link

i read it. not very good. art kinda lackluster too

Nhex, Friday, 18 August 2017 21:40 (seven years ago) link

..but it's snyder so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now

Nhex, Friday, 18 August 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

If I hadn't personally witnessed the decline of DC over the past six years or so, I would've been somewhat aghast at their attempt to paint this Metal thing as an actual event rather than the ignorably-tertiary blip (a la, say, the Batman/TMNT crossover) that it so clearly is.

I wonder what will need to happen for mainstream DC to approach must-read status again. DiDio retiring, at the very least.

Say, I Heard You Had a Quarrel With Your Best Girl (Old Lunch), Saturday, 19 August 2017 01:42 (seven years ago) link

i'd honestly rather have these "blip"-style events vs the omega clusterfucks DC/Marvel put out every year, all year long, now. i mean is Secret Empire over yet? even Generations has like 20 tie-ins or something

Nhex, Saturday, 19 August 2017 19:08 (seven years ago) link

also these are much easier to read 6 months after the fact from the library

Nhex, Saturday, 19 August 2017 19:08 (seven years ago) link

i just read Civil War II, that story made like no goddamn sense

Nhex, Saturday, 19 August 2017 19:09 (seven years ago) link

wait this is the DC thread sorry

Nhex, Saturday, 19 August 2017 19:09 (seven years ago) link

why don't they just do this shit as some elseworlds thing

bring back elseworlds

Heads up, fucking sandman (g not k) is in this thing

i believe that (s)he is sincere (forksclovetofu), Monday, 21 August 2017 04:18 (seven years ago) link

because multiversity means everything is fair game for the dumbest iteration :/

mh, Monday, 21 August 2017 04:25 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

This is kind of a dumb question but - what's up with the appearance/skin color of Helena Bertinelli/Huntress? She had a darker skin tone for GRAYSON, and I just read the first arc of BATGIRL AND THE BIRDS OF PREY and she's back to being lily-white?

Nhex, Monday, 4 September 2017 15:50 (seven years ago) link

one month passes...

So Superman #32, published this week, suddenly announces that it takes place before Deathstroke #21, published 4 months ago. I'm sure that won't have any implications at all, I mean, not unless you were planning a massive event book that will have huge repercussions for your entire universe continuity and centred around the Superman line of books.

(also the Mr Oz reveal seems to have been in line with the late rumours and is k-rub.)

Do you find yourself enjoying enough of these books to offset the damage you're doing to your constitution?

Of course not.

Rebirth is gonna get Bendisy

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 14:34 (seven years ago) link

Interesting. I bet he just got real, real paid.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:17 (seven years ago) link

I assume so. Also probably a big role in DC film and tv.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:18 (seven years ago) link

I'm trying to think of who I'd like to see delivering Mametesque dialogue -- Damian Wayne and Alfred having a big argument is all I got.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:22 (seven years ago) link

I'm seeing sassy Lois Lane, too many speech bubbles

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:25 (seven years ago) link

Tom Spurgeon suggested Legion of Super Heroes and I can see them going full Bendis with ease.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link

I fear there will be a Barbara Gordon goes Alias comic.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

This might be a good thing for everyone involved. Bendis has seemed pretty uninspired for a while now (nb, haven't gotten around to reading his more recent street-level stuff eg Jessica Jones and Defenders), and he doesn't seem built for stuff like X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy. I hope for DC's sake, though, that they aren't bringing him in as like a 'show runner' because that is really not his strong suit at all. His books have long been the spanner in the works of continuity because he seems terminally incapable of staying in step with what's going on in associated titles (or maybe just unwilling).

Your welcome. (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:58 (seven years ago) link

Of his recent stuff, I really enjoyed the first year of his recent X-Men and Iron Man runs, but they both petered out badly.

My best defence for him is that his mediocre books are better than DC's current mediocre books. And he'd probably be a good fit for triangle-era style Superman.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 16:59 (seven years ago) link

Can't wait for Cyborg to start calling himself "nigga"

This Bendis switching teams thing is actually kind of a big deal! I have to wonder what else he would try to ply out of Marvel at this point

Nhex, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link

I'm actually a bit surprised that a figure of his prominence has been solely associated w/Marvel for so long. I thought these folks frequently went back and forth...

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 23:06 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, this is no small thing. Whether you like his work or not, it's undeniable that the dude has had a huge impact on Marvel over the past decade and a half. I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that he's maybe among the top 10-20 most impactful figures in their history.

Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 23:13 (seven years ago) link

I got the impression he was in the track to either flip to management/editorial or find another engagement writing elsewhere. There were a few comments on twitter where he was reiterating the company line (buy single issues in comic stores or your faves might not continue or be collected!). Comics-wise, the work he did that shaped company direction is pretty scattershot post-2010 and advising on film work seems like it'd be frustrating as a writer. Everything he's worked on recently is a retread (Civil War II) or something that's been brought back because of tv tie-ins (Jessica Jones, Defenders).

Hopefully they give him something he enjoys at DC

mh, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 14:39 (seven years ago) link

Hope they don't, he's a terrible writer and significantly responsible for the navel-burrowing market restriction of the two big superhero publishers in the 21st century

I'm actually a bit surprised that a figure of his prominence has been solely associated w/Marvel for so long.

He was solely associated with Caliber for most of the 90s, moved his Caliber books to Image when he started being associated with Image, and had Marvel start a mini-imprint for creator-owned books just so that he could bring his Image work over there. Dude obviously prefers having the vast majority of his work under one roof.

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 17:52 (seven years ago) link

by "something he enjoys" I mean "some book people who really want Bendis material can read without him getting editorial direction"

mh, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 19:27 (seven years ago) link

Hickman too apparently, non-exclusive.

Thomas Gabriel Fischer does not endorse (aldo), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 21:29 (seven years ago) link

Ok Hickman is great fit, considering he basically writes classic DC stories with Marvel characters

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 22:15 (seven years ago) link

about fucking time this got more attention
