In the wake of Batman's intense dickery, it's surely time for a reappraisal of Proper Batman ie Adam West. With Waid making sure that the first thing out of his mouth when disavowing the dickness is to deny that it'll be Adam West back again, will the comics world ever come around to the hokey and hip side of the caped crusader?

I just saw the film again and it's absolutely phenominal, btw. Makes Batman Begins look... well, really stupid.

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 25 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh stop that.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

It does! I think future generations will find current Batman exactly as cringeworthy as the fan element seems to find Adam West now. It's almost come right back around to total parody again - in fact, Miller to thread.

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

You don't know what you're talking about. You don't. You're talking. About nothing. You don't know. Give me your money.

The Frank Miller (Leee), Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Actually old-skool Batman movie and "Batman Begins" go very well together, in my experience. It's like watching episodes of the 60's show followed by eps of the animated series, they enhance each other.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm with vic, that "serious batman" thing was cool for a while but the only true catwoman is julie newmar, lee meriwether, or eartha kitt.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

and how come batman doesn't DANCE anymore?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

The Bat-watusi was a lot easier to master than more modern forms of Bat-krumping.

ng-unit, Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I think the story of a man scarred by the trauma of seeing his parents gunned down in Crime Alley, who finds a therapeutic joy in life by dressing in an ill-fitting bat suit and punching people and acting goofy, is a very inspiring one! Where's the hope in Batdick's story? Where's the heroic message? Batman nowadays is essentially Sisyphus. Or the Beard Hunter!

I would like there to be an Elseworlds where Dancing 60s Batman comes face to face with Moody 00s Batman and each is repulsed by what they see.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

And then they have to swap places!

"I hit his jaw in just the right place to make a giant word POW float in the air. It looks good."

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Damn that's a good idea.

Next DC crossover should be called "Planet Batusi", and every hero out there should be forced to DANCE OR DIE!

iodine (iodine), Monday, 26 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

The Planetary/Batman comic is a bit like what Tom suggested. A bit.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 September 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

I liked Batman Begins a lot more before people started claiming that we could dispense with previous versions, the One True Batman had arrived.

Yeah, that's an awesome cover. Too bad DC isn't letting him use it. They made Allred change it to

which is still pretty great, but not as great.

The Yellow Kid, Monday, 26 September 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

for real? that's even fuckeder than the axed Clowes Bizarro cover!

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 26 September 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Okay, all of this handwringing about the importance of Batman Begins in the Batman canon is not only making me hate the movie, it's also making me hate all of humanity. When the revolution comes you will all be first up against the wall (it's a big fucking wall) (except Andrew because he's bigger than me and I'm afeared of him).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Batman Begins is a fun movie. Batman & Robin (from 1966 or 67) is a fun movie, possibly--likely MORE fun, but for different (better) reasons.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

It's like saying Ham & Pineapple is THE DEFINITIVE pizza.

I like how his cape has ended up over his shoulder.

robertw, Monday, 26 September 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

It's so that it can double as a Personal Flotation Device.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

He did it on porpoise.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

(I think that by my own rules I now have to put myself against the wall.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but who would should you.

Surely Batman should just spray his cape with anti-shark repellant as a matter of course, rather than carrying it around with him. I bet Batman Begin's Batman has pre-sprayed HIS cape.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Or just stays out of the water. Leave it to Aquaman.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Andrew would should me, I guess. Where is Spelling Bee Man when you need him?

The Ghost of Trusty Sidekick Spellcheck Lass (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Batman Begins would've been vastly improved by Bruce studying in the temple of Ra's about what sprays to use on what marine creatures. And instead of there being a foreshadowy playing card at the end, there should just be a ticking shark attacking Batman's leg. It'd make for a bit more of a cliffhanger ending.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 26 September 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh stop that. For one, you'd know they'd make the shark as realistic as possible, which would totally blow the intended effect. For another, who's to say he DIDN'T study such sprays in between getting hit with sticks and playing with fire?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

In the 60s that WAS as realistic as possible!

Vic Fluro, Monday, 26 September 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Surely more realistic would to have been to cut rapidly between underwater stock footage of a shark and then Adam West's anguished face.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

HE IS FUCKING TEH SHARK!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Tom's got it. And would you actually want a CGI Jaws clamped around Christian Bale's ankle?

Fun fact: if you zoom in on the scene when Katie Holmes tasers the Scarecrow, the taser says "SUPER-VILLAIN REPELLANT".

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

really?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't really mind where Batman ends up in the Canon, I just don't want to pretend that there aren't other films in there as well. There was a few (okay, maybe only two) people who seemed to treat the two films called Batman as inferior attempts to make Batman Begins. Which is sort of retarded. That's all.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

BAT COOP?

What a dick!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Holy halibut, Batman! We have bigger fish to fry now!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 26 September 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

We've even tainted the noble porpoise with war! Holy lost innocence Batman.
