As Huck said, "The first year (of The Flash) is fucking amazing. Seriously fucking amazing." Dude is also partially responsible for Nexus. And The Punisher. And some other stuff. Yep.

CLASSIC. Really good ideas, good plotting, lovely clipped dialogue, I have no idea why he didn't get loads more work.

The only thing of his I never really 'got' was Badger.

His website says he did Deadman too.

― Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! In your favourite comic, Action Comics Weekly!

― Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I thought, and I just checked comics.org to confirm. Those were freaky stories, and involved Deadman possessing the body of Raisa Gorbechev and brandishing a big laser rifle at some diplomatic ball.

He also wrote the Deadman prestige format stuff drawn by Kelley Jones that I wanted but seemed out of my price range in the early 90s!

Yep - that Raisa-w/-laser-rifle thing is Mike Baron in a nutshell.

I really like his mainstream work (cf. Flash, Punisher), but never really got into Badger or Nexus, as characters or as books (tho Steve Rude's art was pretty nice). He's probably the closest Amurrica will come to Peter Milligan. I think he's doing some Image series now.

He also wrote the infamous Sonic Disruptors 12-issue maxi-series that was cancelled after #7!

― Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! That was the series about the space rock band, wasn't it?

― David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Beats me!

Joe Casey interviewed MB for Newsarama.

BARON: Yes, and I wrote a lot of crap which is why I'm not writing any major series today. I made bad decisions. I used coke to write stories. I have difficulty looking at some of those comics without cringing. I'm on a very steep learning curve right now. Comics are what you make them. I can't afford to write bad comics. Of course every writer must entertain himself. Why, I could recite to you from my latest etchings for hours... 'Twas a dark and stormy night! Decisions were made as the slithery eel plip-plopped down the on-ramp at wildly excessive speed...

Get Jackson Guice to draw the eel, and I'm there.

FIX TAGS, Dr. Diva!

― Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Shan't.

― Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

My bad.

nine years pass...

him and Steve Rude on Nexus = some of the best comics ever imo

― Οὖτις, Thursday, 3 September 2015 21:06 (eleven years ago)

I really need to reread those, have been meaning to for like a decade.

― banned on ixlor (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 3 September 2015 21:39 (eleven years ago)

I have all the Rude-illustrated issues up to #50, and then I have one of the miniseries - I'm eager to fill in the gaps but it's sort of hard to keep track of what's been collected where

― Οὖτις, Thursday, 3 September 2015 21:57 (eleven years ago)

It's pretty much all in print either in hardcover or tradepaper back. There might be some of the last stuff that hasn't been collected much yet, but most of the series is in print.

Judah the Hammer is one of my all time favorite comic characters. I always liked him and his dad Dave.

Badger and Nexus are underrated as hell
