Before Marvel & DC showed love to 90s / 00s indie folx like Bendis & Brubaker (&, um, the rest of them) (Winick!), they showed love to 80s indie folx like Mike Baron and JOHN OSTRANDER!

SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD! SUICIDE SQUAD!

Have never read Grimjack, tho. I have fond memories of his Spectre series, tho. Also:

Also CLASSIC, except after Suicide Squad I never felt the love quite as strongly - his latterday stuff like Martian Manhunter and Spectre was always a bit worthy-but-dull.

Suicide Squad is an all-time great. Hawkworld is good stuff often let down by poor art. His run on Firestorm - which I've just been re-reading - is pretty good too, even if most of it is firefighting on a dying title, and the final 'elementals' twist is lame. But the 'Ronnie and the Russian' era is great stuff!

I've got the complete Suicide Squad in CBR. I haven't touched it yet, though (fuck, I still haven't finished the Martian Manhunter mini).

After Marv Wolfman, Ostrander's stuff if probably the most referenced in the current Infinite Crisis boom-dada-boom, from Suicide Squad elements in Manhunter, JSA, Day of Vengeance, Villains United, etc, to his Spectre stuff all over the place.

I've still only read the first 20+ issues of SS.

The one thing I remember about JS on Firestorm - VERY ropey art. I think the regular artist switched styles mid-run - from Al Milgrom worship to Keith Giffen worship (and used a pseudonym!), with mixed results. And then they brought on Tom Mandrake, which was OK. I liked the brown / yellow Firestorm more than the yellow / red one.

That said, there's still a reckoning to be had for Jack T. Chance. YOWZA!

xpost!
J.J. Bair!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was JJ Birch...?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Bair (as in Michael) is Rags Morales' partner in IDENTITY CRISIS CRIME.

My cat's breath smells like cat breath.

Probably. I was mixing it up with Michael Bair.

(Bair frequently inked "Birch")

The Giffen rip-offs (surely Munoz rip-offs ultimately) were OK I thought!

SUICIDE SQUAD was terrific, yes, esp. the occasional issues that were just between-mission downtime. Also admired the fact that it was generally anti-status-quo as a series.

I also have very fond memories of WASTELAND, his totally weird-assed collaboration with Del Close and a rotating lineup of artists.

Suicide Squad love thirded/fourthed/whatever. Also great: Grimjack (Ostrander and Timothy Truman always made a good pair)!

Suicide Squad, by Ostrander, back in 07 according to Newsarama.

Only a mini-series, though.
