It's not offensively bad, it's just... very boring? And it seems like Coates knows it, too. For a fan he seems surprisingly deaf to what makes comics work.

Before his Black Panther run started, Coates (by his own account) literally did not know that there were any comics publishers other than Marvel and DC.
Six years later, he has learned that Marvel treat their workers poorly.
