Mmmaybe this doesn't deserve its own thread, but it jives w/ Martin's X-zine story. And I CAPS LOCK'd the title just for Casuistry.

This thread is also here for me to say that, when I was a wee lad, I LIVED BY THESE DAMN THINGS.

Got link? My friend Leonard will want to know about this.

NO WAY!!!!

BELASCO. One thing I remember about Belasco, other than that he was boring and stupid, is that his henchman was this giant demon named S'ym who looked like a huge killer aardvark. The writers must have thought this was terribly clever. I wonder if S'ym is still around, and if he's turned into a batshit-crazy fagbashing woman-hater?

This was from the same period when Claremont and Sim actually plotted an X-Men/Cerebus crossover, under the delusion that the former had enough clout or starpower to crank out whatever X-spinoffs took his fancy.

That site is roffle-y.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Mostly because of the MODOK fixation (nb MODOK is the first entry I looked for) (I bought the first She-Hulk trade yesterday and LO the first villian you see is MODOK. Thanks, ILC!).

This is a total waste of an ESSENTIAL. They could have done Nick Fury.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

I noticed the other day that this was coming out. I was idly considering trying to snag some of the older collections of this not long ago, so this is serendipitous. It'll be completely out of date, though. Whatever.

I agree that they should've done Nick Fury. In terms of completeist-ness, they need to get cracking on that and Sub Mariner. I'm guessing that Captain Marvel, Man Thing, and Shang Chi are just around the corner. Especially given the upcoming (far from) Essential Godzilla.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

They seemed to have realised that the market for Essentials wants not "great old comics" but "mad old shite", Essential Micronauts here we come.

(This is kind of a good thing in some ways)

There is a limited amount of solid gold Silver Age material, but I'm still appalled when they haven't got around to completing the Kirby FFs and Thors yet, or collected any significant Gerber. I wonder if there is a sense of wanting to spread out the best material now?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I want an Essential Iron Fist.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

IT'S OUT! Complete w/ a THRILLPOWERED Vic Fluro ILC-Sanctioned Non-Endorsement!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

OMG! Much as I love Iron Fist...That really isn't right.

Okay, I bet they haven't done Essential Fing Fang Foom.

I'd be very pleased if they did an Essential '50s monster comics volume or two.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Essential Nick Fury wouldn't work. It needs that viva la 60s color!

I may succumb to temptation and get the Essential Handbook, though. That was when I was high into my Marvel Zombie phase and the bloom was still on the rose.

Essential 50s monsters would so totally rock.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Marvel's giving MONSTER Tales To Astonish the Masterworks treatment in January - hopefully, the Essentials treatment will quickly follow. The reprints in the Marvel Monsters one-shots [OUTH THIS MONTH!] are cool & all, but the coloring is AWFUL.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

OUTH DAMN SOPT OUTH

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

A Masterwork at $50 is completely missing the target market. Pulp for pulp monsters, dammit!
