A retrospective allows us once again to ask "classic or dud", but it also allows us to check out the magnificent collection of BEARDS halfway down the page.

Like Sade always croons, “It’s never as good as the first time.”

i enjoyed his runs on spiderman (hobgoblin esp.), his issue of the avengers that were drawn by buscema+palmer, his captain america collaboration w/ john byrne and joe rubinstein - all good, efficent superhero stories written with genre knowledge + affection but not overburned w/ gruenwald-esque continuity spasms - it's sort've hard to define the stern 'touch'/style, tho', beyond 'professional'

Roger Stern is completely classic. His Spider-Man run with John Romita Jr. was fantastic.

What Ward said: classic on Spidey (don't discount the Frenz issues!), classic on Avengers (even before the Buscema / Palmer run) (and I heard he left the title because the editors wanted to boot Monica Rambeau - aka Captain Marvel, aka Photon - as Avengers Chairman, and he wasn't having it). And he was decent ("professional" to the nth degree) on the Superbooks following Byrne's exit, Stage Kiss My Ass.

(If that comma @ the end doesn't belong, then bite me.)

I'm going to dig out some of his old Supermans and get back to you. But as far as memory serves, completely classic.

His Dr Strange run is great fun - especially the issues with Paul Thingy, the X-Men fella whose name I forget. Great one-offs with buckets of charm and character, with a subplot or two brewing away in the background.

Paul Smith. (Easy to forget.) Yeah, Stern's Dr. Strange run is my favorite of his work. Also, I was impressed by how well Dan Green switched from just inking to pencils and inks.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 October 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Sterno's indulgence in Captain Marvel as his pet character really got on my nerves, actually. Good call, editors.

His Legionnaires run was pretty dud, wasn't it? Too much nicey-nice and cutesy-poo for my taste. Even the Silver Age series was never so toothless.

I liked his Power of the Atom run a lot when I was a kid b/c of the "Stern touch" that he brought to it. I think that he does have an identifiable style, and it has something very much to do with Silver Age DC comics. Not only is his scripting "professional", but his heroes are as well-- they're always very rational and career-minded. I think this rubbed off on his buddy Byrne in a big way.

Taking Sides: Captain Marvel vs. WASP (see? WASP!)

Yeah, tough moral position to be in. "Deliberative", that's the word I'm looking for to describe this style. Weirdly, Cyclops from Byrne/Claremont X-Men is almost the ne plus ultra of this phenomenon ("weirdly", because it was Claremont that wrote all that leaderly dialogue, right?).
