This is my comic: Killer Robots from Space. It is mostly about robots standing around saying stupid things to each other, so if you are into robots standing around saying stupid things to each other, perhaps this is the comic for you!

What does anyone make of this?http://dresdencodak.com/2007/02/08/pom/
It's very accomplished, and I enjoyed it a lot at first - then it goes kind of, um, confusing, like Morrison turned up to 11 with a load of extra hardcore science geekery thrown in.
― chap, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 17:02 (fifteen years ago)
re: dresdencodak, I like the "let a thousand flowers bloom" that web publishing allows, and it is clear from just reading a little of it that it is geared towards a specific audience, and if I count myself out of that audience, I have no right to pass judgment on it, since as a webcomic, it cost me nothing to sample it and no one has thrust it at me unbidden.
this will change, however, if it turns into a pennyarcade thing where nerds around me drop references to it constantly and hold conventions...dresdencodak, I'm warning you!
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)
Oh and I like this webcomic but it turns out it is also printed, and it's sort of disheartening that I've yet to see any webcomics I like that are exclusively webcomics, which is bumming me out because I had real faith in the "let a thousand flowers bloom" thing.

there's so many out there, though - i mean, webcomics have been around for over a decade, and the more successful ones do at least try to do some self-published books to make money

Would just like to say that Scary Go Round (which ended last week) was very enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing what John Allison has starting up next week.

also, it also depends on what you're looking for and your tastes. like to me, Dresden Cosdak has some pretty art and coloring but the story/characters/sense of humor are lame, the layouts seem to be designed by a spastic with no concern for readability, and it thinks itself far too clever in general
― Nhex, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 22:20 (fifteen years ago)
See, I like quite a bit of the humour in Dresden Cosdak, and I find a lot of the ideas very interesting - it's stuff that the trippier end of hard SF literature is concerned with, which I haven't really seen addressed in comics before. And I think he is clever, though in quite a weird and autistic way.
I agree that his shit is often not at all readable though, which is a big problem.
― chap, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago)
I thought http://dresdencodak.com/2009/05/11/42-essential-3rd-act-twists/ was particularly excellent.
Is it me or has Achewood been unbelievably weird lately? I mean, great, also--the "becomes or already is" bit made me laugh for a couple of minutes straight--but the WTF factor is extremely high.
Also very fond of http://octopuspie.com , chiefly because it keeps hammering at its own boundaries.
― Douglas, Thursday, 17 September 2009 04:49 (fifteen years ago)
Totally agree about Octopus Pie, seems to have improved greatly over the last year.
If you like that sort of stuff, but with a decidedly more misanthropic view (great characters, though!), try Anders Love Maria:http://anderslovesmaria.reneengstrom.com/

A difficult to navigate collective site, with a mix of French & English language works featuring some very nice looking artwork & probably some gems if you're willing to dig around.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 17 September 2009 06:02 (fifteen years ago)
"webcomics have been around for over a decade, and the more successful ones do at least try to do some self-published books"What disappoints me is when I find out they originally started in print and are now using the web as a cheaper distribution/promotion system, which implies that even without the web, they'd still be around, though maybe less famous. (Though I'm not sure that's even true -- wouldn't Perry Bible Fellowship become as famous and popular as The Far Side in a pre-web marketplace?)
"he is clever, though in quite a weird and autistic way."I would actually like to see webcomics by actual full-blown autistics. There was a print comic by a person with dissociative identity disorder that was semi-famous but I was never able to track it down.

I have been reading Hanselmann for a... decade?, bought most of his handmade minis and zines through the mail or in person on two continents, got my Megahex HC kiss-signed with a lock of wig hair... but gave up on Crisis Zone a couple of weeks in because Instagram is so bad to read comics on
tried a bit of Mr Boop an hour ago, but not being able to see a single four-panel strip at once put me off too

The current run of Simon Hanselmann's pre-Covid Megg and Mogg stories on Instagram... ugh. Just kind of awful and nihilistic. Reminds me why I had a hard time getting into his stuff.
