Quest For The Forgotten Comic

In the past few months I've been turned on to the existence of:

- A comic strip called Mighty Moth, described by no less than Grant Morrison as 'a Kafkaesque nightmare' or somesuch. It sounds utterly beyond madness.
- Jack Kirby drawing The Prisoner, Number 6 (only a few pages survive but I still want to see them).
- Grant Morrison's Avengers (I have the first issue but allegedly there were more).

Where can I get a look at these fascinating epics? And what strange half-whispered comics are you chasing?

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Monday, 14 November 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Samuel Delany's Wonder Woman issues from the 60's!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 14 November 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

There were three issues of Morrison's Avengers comic (I only have the first two! sob) but the second and third booted his story out of the second half of the book for some lameo fanfic about Mr Peel's adventures while he was lost in the Amazon or somesuch, including an opening scene where he throw aways his "Steed" disguise after driving away with Emma in her final episode.

Seriously, Wonder Woman? I can't imagine they let him do what he really wanted to do with that...

turn into a man and have sex with lots of dirty tramps?

(just kidding, I love Delany...)

Vic

"A comic strip called Mighty Moth..." appeared in the weekly British comic TV Comic, from 1959 to 1984. A google search on the words Mighty Moth TV Comic should bring you plenty more information

tom west (thomp), Monday, 14 November 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

which sadly made me more excited as an idea, morrison writing those avengers. oyy.

tom west (thomp), Monday, 14 November 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, as far I can remember, it's a bit rub

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 14 November 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I have one of the Delany WW's but I keep forgetting to get it out and CBZ it! I swear I will do it this week!

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

You're right, Anthony:

Among Delany's more unusual credits is that he wrote two issues of the comic book Wonder Woman in 1972, during a controversial period in the publication's history when the lead character abandoned her superpowers and became a secret agent. Delany scripted issues #202 and 203 of the series.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

kirby did his Prisoner adaptation in the late 70s, somewhat past his prime, sadly - i seem to recall seeing pencil pages reproduced in an issue of the Jack Kirby Collector - funny thing is, Gil Kane also drew unpublished pages for a marvel/prisoner comic, i'd like to see those too

kirby and lee had already paid tribute to the prisoner in some great late issues of the FF, involving dr doom/brainwashing/the ff etc.

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I've searched all over the house and office and can't find my copy of WW#203. :-(

Re "...Gil Kane also drew unpublished pages for a marvel/prisoner comic, i'd like to see those too..."

There's a page of art and some stuff about it at http://www.steveenglehart.com/Comics/Prisoner%201.html

David Simpson (David Simpson), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Vic, I've found a torrent which claims to have the Morrison Avengers issues. Once I've got them, I'll YSI them on here!

(I found his Dare today which was a good, if downright depressing read)

carson dial (carson dial), Saturday, 26 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Sweet! I only have the first...

I did manage to pick up some old Warriors for 10p each recently, which made me hungry for Marvelman. But that's not strictly a forgotten comic (at least not forgotten BY TEH LAWYERS GRRR).

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Incidentally, I've just won an eBay auction for 2000AD Progs 842-849, for the Morrison/Hughes Really & Truly. It seems to be a forgotten part of Grant's 2000AD work - does that mean it's rather poor?

carson dial (carson dial), Sunday, 27 November 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

On the contrary, those were really exciting times for 2000AD! Really and Truly is beautiful, brainless nonsense, but in those same progs you have Slaughterbowl, Maniac 5 and Big Dave, all of which are fantastic. You've got some ace and irreverent thrills coming.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 27 November 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes, those first two Big Dave stories are among the best work Morrison ever did, and tower above the rest of Millar's oeuvre by an embarrassing distance. (M&M are also writing Dredd in that run of issues, in case you don't know.)

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 27 November 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

Their Dredd was good, fun stuff, but in those issues they seemed to still be learning their take on him - Morrison's later Dredd work is a lot more thrill-powered, while Millar hits the occasional high spot but more often fails with the character. I wouldn't mind seeing Morrison do Dredd now, actually - with the current soap-opera/police-procedural direction squeezing out the humour a little, Dredd could probably use somebody turning him into a mad superhero for a few progs to cleanse the palate.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 27 November 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

yay! Thanks guys. I missed out on 2000AD as a child; after Transformers UK was cancelled, I dropped out of comics altogether for a few years and just bought computer games instead, so I'm filling in things I should have read ;).

carson dial (carson dial), Sunday, 27 November 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Is anybody else looking forward to the Dredd phonebooks that are on their way? Like SHOWCASE and ESSENTIALS but with Judge Dredd! I can't find any evidence that it exists but I'm certain it will very soon.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 27 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I would SO TOTALLY get that.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 27 November 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I distinctly remember seeing something with Ian Gibson's early Dredd on it that fitted the description - can anyone find a link to this?

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 27 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

http://www.2000adonline.com/functions/cover.php?Comic=graphicnovels&choice=casefiles1

There we go. Reprints everything up to prog 60, so that's slightly over 300 pages for about £14. Featuring the Robot War and the Luna-1 story, out in December.
