A hump like a snowhill, it's a whole lotta crap coming this Wednesday! Just in time for the lull between Veteran's Day & Turkey Day! This week: Ed Brubaker gets paid! Matt Wagner gets batty! Supergirl gets a burger! Captain Atom gets fugly! And folks buy manga (but don't talk about it here)!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN #1 (OF 6) - Papa-L loves him some Wagnerian Batman!
GREEN ARROW #56 - Dr. Light, who stole the powers of Dr. Light, strikes at Green Arrow's loved ones--including GREEN ARROW! (guest-starring Black Lightning, no really)
GREEN LANTERN #5 - I'm a shark from the future! COUNT MY TEETH...AND THEN DIE!
THING #1 - Dan Slott will make me enjoy another character I've never really cared about!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

ALL STAR SUPERMAN #1--I have read this already, and it's fabulous.
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES VOL 1 TEENAGE REVOLUTION TP--If you haven't been reading this incarnation of Legion, do try this, okay?
TOMORROW STORIES SPECIAL #1--I realized a few days ago that the number of Alan Moore comics that have yet to be published was probably in the very low two digits. That made me really sad.
X-MEN DEADLY GENESIS #1 (OF 6)--Ed Brubaker's writing this, yes? That means I'm interested. And otherwise probably wouldn't be.
BANANA SUNDAY #4 (OF 4)--Really sweet, entertaining kids' comic by Colleen Coover and Root Nibot. Yes, that Colleen Coover.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Wow, great week. I am all about:

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (first Superman comic I'll have bought in, uh, possibly forever!)

BATMAN & THE MONSTER MEN

FABLES

RUNAWAYS

Also Top 10 and maybe Tomorrow Stories.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I have never bought an X-Book, and I didn't start today.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

You cannae hold out forevah!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Can someone please tell me whether or not BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN is any good?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I've got it in the car, I will read it tonight.

I bought a TON OF SHIT tonight, incl. Dan Slott's TEH THANG and the first issue of the new She-Hulk that I had somehow missed (#2 hasn't come out yet, right?).

Maddie got way more than I did, incl. Black Hole and Rent Girl trades.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

So far, The Thing is the happyfuntime winner!

Batman was totally solid, if not mindblowing, but it does have the promise of MONSTER MEN to come. The mad scientist bits were amusing too.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Me: Flaming Carrot #4 (cute but v. minor, overt "Zen stupidity" thing continues to rankle, may get dropped very soon)
Stray Bullets #whatever (I've had enough-- I'm dropping it)
All-Star Superman #1 (see other thread)
Bulleteer #1 (OK but not great-- is this GM's special fear of aging month?)
free copy of Klarion #4 from my retailer to make up for the previous "defective" copy I bought that I don't think actually contained a printing defect (what the hell am I supposed to do with this?)

I looked at the Coover thing and Plastic Man-- nice art, but I think I'm scaling back on comics reading/spending, so I didn't pick them up. Looked at The Thing and it looked like honey for old school superhero readers, but for similar reasons I kept my distance. And this month's issue of the Milligan X-Men looked really dumb and pointless and not at all ironic-- what's up with that?

I've been thinking of dropping out of the comic book scene entirely once ASS has run its course-- I'm really not satisfied with what I've been buying as of late. Which is neither here nor there and who cares, but I thought I'd mention it.

Chris F. (servoret), Thursday, 17 November 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Bought Deadly Genesis, and was deadly bored by it. Not sticking around for the rest. The Tomorrow Stories Special is half Alan Moore, half Steve Moore (actually a couple of stories are just credited to "Moore," which is chin-scratchable)--the ones Alan M. obv. wrote are a longish Jack B. Quick story (WE GET THE JOKE YOU CAN STOP NOW... NO, REALLY) and a Greyshirt tribute to Will Eisner and the Spirit, which I know belongs in the Dept. of Redundancy Dept. I'd say I'm going to give up on the America's Best line altogether after the final issue of Tom Strong and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Black Dossier, but I think that's when the line is also giving up...

Jordan, let me know what you/Maddie think of Black Hole!

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

douglas you don't like jack b. quick???

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Batman & the Monster Men #1: Agreed, the fun is yet to come, but Wagner has very good handle on what's great about Batman--there are a few panels of Bat-Action that are just woo-hoo! The Dr., er, Professor Strange bits are neato, too. It's interesting to have this come out at the same time as the Miller/Lee (but not Leeeeeeee) ASB&RTBW, as it covers a similar phase in Bat-Development, post-YO, Batman getting the feeling he might have his war on crime nearly licked, but, um, ESCALATION. I'm in.
Supergirl #3: I bought the Turner cover, by choice, not realizing it was the Turner cover, but because it had nifty Super Powers Lex on it, and not just a close up of Supergirl, whom Loeb has forgotten to endow with any likable qualities. FINAL ISSUE (that I will buy).
The Thing #1: I've never read a Thing or Fantastic Four comic, but I've liked pretty much everything Slott's done (except, oddly enough, the most recent She-Hulk #1, found it a tad b-o-r-i-n-g). This is no exception. The art is inconsistently okay, sometimes real nice, sometimes poopy. WHERE IS TY TEMPLETON?
Green Arrow #SOMETHING: This is probably as bad as comics get without actually, y'know, being righteously terrible. Winnick is still trying to sell us last year's MEGA-EVENT (didn't he get the INFINITE memo?), with colour-coded int. monologues & everything. Not counting the two fill-in issues, I think there's been about 3 issues worth of plot in the last year, and the rest has just been needlessly drawn-out FITE action, or worse, as in this issue, needlessly drawn-out FLEE action.
Green Lantern #4: Oh, fuck off. Johns invested so much effort in Rebirth convincing us that Hal Jordan MUST LIVE AGAIN, but has yet to actually show post-mortem Jordan as someone worth the oxygen he takes up. Interesting subplot with the General, though, as it seems like GL might become a man with too many masters. HA HA!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

there are a few panels of Bat-Action that are just woo-hoo!

Yeah, the two panels where the dude gets dragged into the shadows are classically great. This is a very heterosexual Bruce Wayne, though!

Having finally read She-Hulk #1 last night, I didn't find it boring per say but I did feel a little ripped-off because it was SO dependent on all those crossover stories (AVINGEERS: DISABEMBLED and whatever else) that I never read. I guess that's what I get for only caring about two or three Marvel titles these days.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've even finished reading She-Hulk #1.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

er, whoops, that should be Green Lantern #5, which shows how many damns I give about this series right now: not a one.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

"per se"

I don't know where my head is at this morning.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Dear Chris F - I can understand your "whatever" re: ONLY NINETEEN PAGES of Stray Bullets, but cutting bait on Flaming Carrot before the extra-special Fumetti issue is madness!

What I'm Getting NEXT WEEK:

ALL STAR SUPERMAN #1: :D
BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN #1 (OF 6): is there something WRONG with a hetero Bruce?
BATMAN JOURNEY INTO KNIGHT #4 (OF 12): because I forgot to cut this turkey down; maybe it'll read better in one sitting; I doubt it
BIRDS OF PREY #88
FABLES #43 (MR)
GREEN LANTERN #5: Ethang Vin Scyver my love for you & bloody shark bits knows no bounds
TOP 10 BEYOND THE FARTHEST PRECINCT #4 (OF 5): fun & silly! possibly better than The 49ers! or maybe I'm just saying that!

SEA OF RED #6 (MR)

BOOKS OF DOOM #1 (OF 6)
DAREDEVIL VS PUNISHER #6 (OF 6)
FANTASTIC FOUR #532
FANTASTIC FOUR IRON MAN BIG IN JAPAN #2 (OF 4): LESS ADS PLZ THANX
MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #20: DIE SPIDER DIE
MUTOPIA X #5 (OF 5): yep.
RUNAWAYS #10
THING #1: :D
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #86: OMG ULTIMATE VISION!
X-MEN #177
X-MEN DEADLY GENESIS #1 (OF 6): Douglas you wound me, if only because this is the most I've looked forward to an X-thing since the start of the 2nd Whedon / Cassaday lovefest.

LOCAL #1 (OF 12) (MR)

And Black Hole is on my GIMME MONEY list. So GIMMY MONEY.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

o man the new top ten is so not better than the niners, i'm still reading it (and hell if it's just a five issue deal i'll read them all) but mainly just cuz i like the characters, i know 'not as clever as alan moore's' is a bit unfair but it still isn't hitting for me, i'd almost prefer they went straight to mad magazine style as it would nail what it can handle more directly.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I feel the same way about nu-Top 10. It's pretty good, but the characters and original stories (incl. the 49'ers, which gets referenced a ton in this!) were so great that there's a lot of momentum to coast on.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Please note that I really really really liked The 49ers, but after reading it, it felt kinda rote, esp. w/ the Big Reveal @ the end that tied the book to Top Ten proper and awww hugglez kiss me you beast. (Never mind that it almost mirrors the Big Reveal @ the end of Top Ten!) My greater fondness for the new TT series prob. has to do w/ the status-quo upheaval. And the dog. God, I love that dog.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

And, by the way, I might be the only person here LOOKING FORWARD to Paul De Fillipo (or however Marvel decides to spell his name) working his magic with DOC SAMSON.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

j blount: I do really like the early Jack B. Quick stories, but a) c'mon, they all have the same plot, and b) the ideal length of a Jack B. Quick story is like three pages, not 16 or whatever this was.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

ok yknow how in the original the lawyer was a shark haw haw and how that was the corniest joke and not even played up too much really? here it'd be the best joke and totally played up. this doesn't annoy me too much really, nor does that the comix 'spot 'em' refs are alot more anvilicious, what annoys me most i think is that the cop show aspect of it - which is the backbone at least as much as 'omg what if superheroes were all in one city together and like everything's superhero' - is ALOT weaker.

xpost ok i haven't read this, agreed that the ideal length of a jack b. quick story is 3 pages.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

to sum up:

i really liked the astonishing x-men book #2. and i am sad that it'll probably be 3 years before we see another one.

legion of super-heroes was good too, although the paper/colour is a little crappy, and i kept having to refer back to the guide near the beginning. i will probably have a more fully-formed opinion of this on second reading.

all-star superman: ehhh.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 November 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Wow, maybe that AXM arc just reads better in one sitting? It really felt super weak towards the end when there were two month gaps between issues. The next series of AXM starts in a couple months, Slocki!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 19 November 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Scroll down a bit here, Slocki.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 19 November 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

will Planet Hulk be as awesome as the solicit makes it sound?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 19 November 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i was into it! the danger room thing was a neat idea & i was onboard for all the other long-game stuff whedon set up in that arc. + fun fantastic four guest appearance!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 November 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

Whoa, Peter Milligan is going to do an Apocalypse storyline??? That's wild.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 19 November 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

a) Blimey, Peter David on X-Factor again. b) From the solicit:

"Strong Guy and Wolfsbane square off against the police during the Mutant Town riots"

Mutant Town riots = a two-person barfight at this stage, though? Particularly since 198 says the remaining mutant are going to Xaviers.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 19 November 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

There are a lot of good writers (and Chris Clarement (and Brian Michael Bendis)) writing for Marvel these days, I don't know why I'm not more hyped about it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 19 November 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Deadly Genesis was hot, so was Books of Doom. Brubaker pwnd this week.
