X-Men ‘97

Not strictly a comic book but I feel like the likely audience for the show would be centered here rather than ILE

Is anyone else watching this?

I am. Most recent episode (5) was probably the best comic adaptation yet, surpassing the X Men films.

It feels a bit too clean -- not janky enough! Actually, it feels like it has a higher animation budget than something like Invincible.
I wonder what a retro 00s or 10s revival would look like since cartoons feel flatter and less distinct by decade.

I agree about episode 5, just absolutely incredible stuff. It makes me mad that they fired the show runner.

Are they looking to do another run? It seems like they wouldn't want to do more than one season in case they wanted to launch another "contemporary" X-Men cartoon to capitalize on whatever live action one is in the works.

Can I just watch the fifth one and skip the others?

The scene where Storm regained her abilities is one of the best comic book adaptations I’ve seen from an energy and motion perspective.

Astounding that it's doing Claremont (forty years old) via Morrison (twenty years old) with a vaguely 2020s sensibility over the top of that, and it's not totally incoherent

short answer is the character's visual appearance was created by jim lee, and that was just how jim lee drew characters back in the day. it doesn't seem to be copied from any real-world fashion or anything, more just "it looks cool"

speaking of '90s character designs, any time i think of cable i get an image in my head of him twirling in a dress, exclaiming, "it has pockets!" it's just a cute and adorable image.

I've also seen "cowl" mentioned.

I quit x-men stuff around the time Gambit joined up. Never really appreciated him much.

there are probably serious, unironic Gambit fans but he works so much better when he's a punchline

which is funny because fans of the original series compliment '97 for making cyclops something other than the world's biggest tool for the first time in the show's history

I guess when he's at the bottom there's only 1 place to go. OTOH Storm is consistently extra dating back to the original toons whenever she's about to summon her powers, she's really been the highlight through the rewatch. (I also like how in One man's Worth, she's able to turn Wolverine into a wife guy.)
