Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gentleee as you move (Leee), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

anyhow the only thing that screams out definitely on the list to me at this instant is manhattan guardian and maaaybe klarion. i'm sure i'll think of more.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

brainstorming potential nominees, not even necessarily issues or stories, just phenomena what was fun:

Spider-Man/Human Torch aka I'm With Stupid
JSA: Classified #1-3 (#4 kinda sucked) (okay, they all kinda sucked, but the art was great)
Mahnke/Nguyen on Batman (oh, the pursed lips of justice!)
BATZARRO!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

to clarify, this ain't a poll. it's a civil discussion among friends.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

that's a little presumptious.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

the boy blue stuff in fables this year was awesome

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

But seriously, I think that, not knowing what Pazz & Jop is, that we ought to concentrate on single issues.

Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gentleee as you move (Leee), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Rockist

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

which issue?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Tales Designed To Thrizzle !!!!
Legion of Super Heroes
Seven Soldiers (specifically Manhattan Guardian #4, which I maintain is one of the best Morrison single issues ever)

I haven't really read much else from this year. Soooo...pretty high quality year, overall!

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Mike Allred's SOLO, obv.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh, right. That one, too.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Klarion #1, fave SS comic so far, although hats off to most of it anyway.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Darwyn Cooke's SOLO, too. In fact, SOLO in general for Book of the Year.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I must humbly admit I've been quite enjoying the Superman/Batman comedy hour of late.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

the operative word being late

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I SWEAR on my ABSOLUTE WATCHMEN that the 2004 poll WILL BE DONE BY THE END OF THE YEAR. Fuck if I'm going to be allowed to run the 2K5 poll, tho.

A possible listie-poo:

- Top Ten: The 49ers GN
- Authority: Revolution (#6 on)
- Spider-Man / Human Torch: I'm With Stupid
- Legion of Super-Heroes
- "Snow" (from Legends of the Dark Knight)
- Solo #7 (BATUSI!!!)
- Solo #5 (DARWYN!!!)
- Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1
- ACTION PHILOSOPHERS!

I'd list more schmindie, but I'm coming up blank.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

i liked the ulti spidey annual too; i liked the last (?) couple of ulti spidey's with the 'holy shit - LOTTA fighting' and black cat finding out what spiderman really was. the allred solo is really great, which solo had the date between catwoman and batman at the beginnning? i liked that.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

True Porn vol. 2

Did Human Target finish up in early '05, or was that last year?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

The Rabbi's Cat, seconded. It's really, really good.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

The Allred issue of SOLO is the best thing I read this year by a considerable distance.

There were some good things from good people - the new Optic Nerve is just solid Tomine stuff, with the same strengths and flaws as per usual. The only series that I read regularly and get excited about is Legion Of Super Heroes. I enjoyed all of the issues of The Ultimates this year too.

The new book version of Clowes' Ice Haven is great, and it's definitely one of my favorite comics ever made, but it's not exactly new to me.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

The new Optic Nerve is doubleplusungood.

The new edition of Sammy Harkham's "The Poor Sailor" rules. Mike Allred's Solo and Rabbi's Cat, for sure. Where is the love for Mome #1 and Kevin Huizenga's "Or Else" series?

ng-unit, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

SUPER F*CKERS

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Poor Sailor - yessss. We3, Spidey/Human Torch, Black Hole, Solo (Cooke & Allred), Ult. Spidey - all yessss.

The Dirty Dozen - the 12 Greatest Commando Stories ever( anybody else seen this?).

Goddamn All Star Batman & Robin, goddammit.

David N (David N.), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

I have lots of love for "Or Else," but it's almost all reprints of stuff I'd seen & loved already so far! But yes, "Fight or Run"... wow.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

But but Douglas, what is Epileptic if not an elegant repackaging of previously-seen material (the first half, at least)? Just kidding. And you're totally right about "Or Else" -- I just love how he's pushing Drawn and Quarterly to experiment with formats + sizes.

New Yorkers: I've heard whispers that the new Acme Novelty Library issue is available at a Chris Ware exhibition. Can anyone confirm or deny?

ng-unit, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a New Yorker, but I can confirm. it may have an exclusive cover, too.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

SUPERFUCKERS, fuckers!!

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm agnostic about Epileptic, which I think is too long by half (although maybe that's the problem of being a big, collected edition). The book itself is ravishing, but I found myself skimming it more and more by the two-thirds mark -- a huge artistic achievement but somewhat... unrelentingly one-note?

List, anyway:

** Vimanarama (no one else for this?)
** Rabbi's Cat
** Ultimates (for making me excitable as a 12-year-old to pick up the next one)
** Guardian, Zatanna, Klarion (ditto)
** Allred and Cooke's Solos
** Dave Sim Letters ('cause I'm in it)
** David Heatley, Deadpan 2 and NYT cartoons (like twee, only BETTER)
** Scott Pilgrim
** Eiland (wanky European head-trip comic)

There's quite a lot above I imagine would be on my list if I'd read them.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

I was trying to remember if Vimanarama was this year or not.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

AUTHORITY: REVOLUTION

Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gentleee as you move (Leee), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to remember what happened at all this year. All I know is that Seven Soldiers came out and to this day I haven't even read the 0 special.

CABLE AND DEADPOOL

If you can't laugh at least once every issue, you're a dead inside, fragile, post-Reagan era sapling.

Who the hell do you THINK I am? I'm the goddamn Batman! (Barima), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Thank god someone else likes Cable and Deadpool. I thought I was the only one.
