Harlem Heroes - classic or dud

"2000 AD Extreme" is reprinting 'Harlem Heroes', about the exciting future sport of Aeroball. Essentially it is like a cross between Rollerball and Basketball, only with jetpacks.

Should I be excited?

Yes! It's classic. I got it and it really is ace - Gibbons and Bellardinelli doing some beautiful stuff, next prog lines that rhyme, substitutes dropping like flies.

And a classic of the "it's not just for whitey" genre, I'll wager.

You're going to have to explain to me what genre that is. If it's got something to do with Tom Tully trying to do 70s Blaxploitation stuff, then certain episodes do have some of that, yes. Particularly those involving Zack, the Tough Kid From The Streets.

(Annoying as Zack is, he does have more personality than poor Hairy, whose entire personality is that he's bald. Hence the name.)

I only ever read the Michael Fleisher-penned revival and it was dreadful.

Could Michael Fleisher be the worst comic writer ever?

No! Because Michael Fleisher wrote The Spectre and Jonah Hex, which bizarrely had 100% Thrill Power. When he wrote for 2000AD, he bizarrely had none at all, so presumably his and Tharg's thrill power cancelled each other out.

Wow, I've only read Fleisher's 2000AD stuff. The revelation that he has done good work leaves me reeling.

I know! You can get his SPECTRE run as WRATH OF THE SPECTRE or something and it's completely zarjaz.

It seems that the court case completely removed his thrill-power, so determined was he to prove the offending epithet incorrect.

VF - basically you have the INJFW genre down pat. It's when something that is very much for whitey tries somewhat unconvincingly to gain some cred among other ethnicities. I suppose another example in 2000AD would be Judge Giant (who is of course the son of someone in Harlem Heroes).
