Is this series any good? Vampires and the mob? Shit, it sounds good but you can never be too sure.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

it's written by Howard Chaykin so it's probably sleazy misogynist rubbish.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

So that's a recommendation then?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What's on Chaykin's CV?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

American Flagg!

And the Shadow series for DC, the PT Barnum thing recently, the Batman/Houdini Elseworlds bit, and other stuff that's probably more obvious and can't remember. But I loved American Flagg.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Blackhawk miniseries, Superman's Son, some new one-shot hardcover about superheroes in love, what else?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Howard Chaykin has forged an entire career out of people loving American Flagg.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This is probably true, although I know a lot of people bought the Shadow, too (if only to be miffed at/confused by it).

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus it's Howard Chaykin paired w/ David Tischman, co-creators of the short-lived (and somewhat vilified) Vertigo series American Century. I think Andrew is OTM re: his faint damning.

was it vilified? It is that on which base my idea that Chaykin is a reprehensible misogynist scumbag.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if the hate was re: misogynist scumbagger so much as outright badness & all-encompassing crapitude.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You've never read Black Kiss then? I thought Chaykin's misogynist reputation was pretty much down to that...

The Shadow got much better when Chaykin stopped writing it though.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shadow series was actually pretty good, even when Mr. Chaykin was writing. It got a lot better when Andy Helfer took over, though. Great art from both Bill Sienkiewicz and Kyle Baker as well (and check out their overlooked Justice Inc series from about that same time period as well.)

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god it's horrible.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
It was awful. And now there's a second series. Why?

James Morrison (JRSM), Friday, 28 April 2006 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Dude this is nothing, there were like 3 series of Vamps.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 28 April 2006 06:34 (twenty years ago)

ouch! so true. and i own them.

btw i dint mind bite club.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 28 April 2006 07:02 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr, ARE YOU ME?

(NB: This does not mean I have succumbed and bought the new series, I'm not that stupid)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 28 April 2006 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Bite Club yes, Seaguy no? Good grief.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Worst title ever.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 28 April 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

It's too bad Ben Kingsley rejected Chris' offer to play the Don.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 28 April 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

"When in doubt, vampires."

This is engraved on a plaque in the Vertigo marketing dept I ph34r.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

HA HA, I saw the title of this thread and thought "I know, I'll post about how being written by Howard Chaykin it is probably sleazy and misogynist", and then realised I had already done so.

Vampires are lame.
