1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?
Showcase Presents Superman, EFF ALL THA HATAZ!!!

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?
"This Guy, This Gardner" from JLA: Classified, I laughed my ass at the first few issues of the story, even though it sort of fell apart when they entered the alternate dimension.

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?
Where to start?

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?
Peace and Goodwill on Earth (2).

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?
Dave Gibbons drawing the first three issues of Green Lantern Corps.

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?
Green Arrow will continue its slide into boring oblivion.

7) What was your biggest disappointment in comics in 2005?
She-Hulk's relaunch. For some reason, I'm just not feeling it this time 'round.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

But haven't there only been two issues of Shuk-L so far, or should I just put it on my pull list?

Obsessing over the unobtainable and nonexistent. (Leee), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, only two issues, and I've only read the first half of #1, so maybe I should read the whole thing AND the second issue before I bitch about it.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

YOU THINK!?!?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

If I'm not HOOKED by the time I read the first splash, it's ALL OVER!

Okay, fine. Killjoys.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm only answering a couple, because I haven't really read enough comics to sound like I even know what I'm talking about.

1) I have only read two all year, and liked both of them a lot: Astonishing X-Men and Seven Soldiers.

3)I don't read any Spiderman, but since my husband is a big fan I know enough to know that the whole eye/eating people's head storyline is totally gross and rumpieworthy.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?
A stark lack of Queen & Country-proper comics, which I blame on that Infinity Catastrophe thing.

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?
Queen & Country! Everest!

I have no sense of time and no memory, so I can't answer the rest!

Obsessing over the unobtainable and nonexistent. (Leee), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?
We3. Get a lump in my throat just thinking "gud dog".

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?
Return to Barrow bringing the series in a circle, with the final reveal of how Barrow survives again.

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?
Infinite uncontained series (like I care, I'm reading library trades).

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?
Pruning & better continuity for the multiple series with the same characters. (Not likely.)

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?
More gritty realism and character evolution (that isn't gratuitous violence/death or minor events stretched out to six issue minis).

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?
Planet Hype doesn't know Which Side I'm On and it all means nothing.

(Might be off on the year for the first two, but this was the year I read them.)

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

"robin dense, retarded"

Where!?!???!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

wait wait wait daver - are YOU dense? are YOU retarded? in the goddamn all-star batman and robin of course!

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

GODDAMN ME!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 December 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

this was the first year that i didn't buy comics since I started collecting in 1990.

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 December 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

1) It took me long enough to be able to keep track of what books and music I've consumed in a year, I don't think I can do that with comics yet. Uh, Lucifer's been really good? Mike Allred Solo? Manhattan Guardian?

2) I'll get back to you.

3) Crossover madness.

4) Samuel Delany's return to Wonder Woman!

5) Seven Soldiers, and maybe that Jonathan Lethem book will be good.

6) That Seven Soldiers #1 is going to be a crushing anticlimax.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 December 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

1)) What's your favorite comic of 2005?

Klarion the Witchboy

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?

End of Manhattan Guardian #4 maybe? All I can think of is Seven Soldiers, sorry.

Oh also Doctor Who: The Tides Of Time finally being reissued and letting me connect with my 9-year old self again.

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?

My head says Eventmania but there's obviously also a fanboy fascination to it, and the tiny slim hope of entertaining stories too. I think the whole "You wrote a- a FILM??? OMG have our star property!" trend is a Bad Thing too: even more fanwank, more cinematic dialogue, less thrill-power.

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?

More thrill-power in general.

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?

Finishing the ILC characters poll, hem hem

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?

NEWSARAMA EXCLUSIVE: Geoff Johns explains his plans for the Seven Soldiers. "Grant's left us all this fantastic playground and I intend to have fun with it," said the writer as he previewed DAN THE DYNO-MITE #1.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?

A tough one - probably All Star Superman, Zatanna, Manhatten Guardian or GLA.

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?

"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."

That or the sci-fi closet.

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?

Infinity Crisizzzz. The continuing slide into Yesterday Power means an ever-shrinking audience of fortysomething people who seem to secretly and perversely enjoy the public perception of comics as fodder for freaks and misfits.

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?

MORE WORK. And if I'm not going to get the chance to bring the thrills back to UK comics I want somebody else to do it. Rob Williams is the current script god of the new set, with Si Spurrier a close second. Artists we're fine for.

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?

Morrison's making Thrill-Power cool, and All Star Supes and the slam-bang Seven Soldiers finish will surely only make the editors sit up and beg for more hyper-action. I predict great things for the Dan Slott school of well-written comics and a lowly death in the mire for J Michael Shywaddywaddy and his overblown hype-filled dronefests.

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?

2000AD going under. That's something of a perennial worry for me.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?

Mike Allred's issue of SOLO.

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?

http://homepage.mac.com/mperpetua/.Public/sunshine.jpg

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?

Pretty much everything in the DC Universe except for Legion Of Super Heroes.

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?

That Geoff Johns and his ilk are all run out of the business.

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to more of those Showcase volumes.

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?

DC will only get worse. But perversely, I kinda want that to happen cos I get a lot of entertainment value out of how bad they are right now.

7) What was your biggest disappointment in comics in 2005?

I'm mostly disappointed in what most people choose to buy vs. what they do not buy.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, the biggest disappointment. Probably missing that Solo and not being able to find it anywhere.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?

Super F*ckers.

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?

Talking to a publisher of indie comics/writer of same/occasional Batman scriptwriter, after he had returned from San Diego with a case of scabies contracted from hotel bedding.

"It's not that bad really, because the tincture they give you is all silvery, so you get to paint yourself up and pretend you're the Silver Surfer! [crouches with arm extended ahead, stares into middle distance] Whooosh!"
"How old are you, D****?"
"... firty-eight."

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?

The rise of overgrown-fanboy navelgazing & fanficcing being adopted as house style, the way forward and something to base mainstream marketing on, at DC. I don't mind personally, inasmuch as I don't actually want to read the products of a superhero "universe", but it strikes me as colossally short-sighted during the window of opportunity that manga's US success has opened for selling discrete works through bookstores. (Marvel's retreat from allowing moderately-talented creators to do occasionally-interesting things on their books is alarmingly conincidental.)

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?

Essentials and Showcase in colour OH PLEASE.

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?

Reading them.

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?

Market collapse/correction meaning that even fewer of the books I want to read make it onto shelves here, and people whose work I like have to get (more) other jobs.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

> 1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?

Hurm. Paul Pope's SOLO or ZATANNA. Tough call.

> 2) What's your favorite comics related moment?

"We have Tesla's Ray" from AMAZING JOY BUZZARDS or the Amazing Sex Secrets of the Newsboy Army cover blurb.

> 3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?

My book didn't come out this year. Bugger. That and Morrison put in an executive position at DC rather than an executing position, if you get my drift.

> 4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?

That SEVEN SOLDIERS will show them how it's done and that the big two embrace a format that lies between floppies and trades.

> 5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?

Getting fucking published and maybe actually getting some work done. That and whatever Darwyn Cooke works on. Paul Pope, too.

> 6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?

So much to worry about, but more circling of the wagon mentality, more conservatism, more drama, less thrill power.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?

Plastic Man. Just kept on getting better so, naturally, got cancelled.

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?

The story in Super F*ckers where they slurp down Grotus' goo and all get stoned. Or maybe the tryouts one where everyone dies.

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?

Stop trying to recreate the 80s. We don't need another event year.

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?

Joycore defeats the Infinitely Sadfaces.

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?

Much more Showcase Presents.

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?

That the ending of Seven Soldiers will suck.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

1) What's your favorite comic of 2005?
Seven Soldiers, Allred's Solo, GLA, All Star Superman, Legion Of Superheroes, Ultimates, Giffen's Defenders.

2) What's your favorite comics related moment?
Superman flies with the sun in the background.

3) What's the worst thing to happen in comics in 2005?
Death Of Blue Beetle and everything that followed. Specially the "now he's a REAL HERO!" mentality of Wizard and certain sectors in fandom.

4) What's your most fervid hope for comics in 2006?
Less crossovers, more mad ideas packed between covers.

5) What aspect of comics in 2006 are you most looking forward to?
The ending of Seven Soldiers (as I know IT WILL ROCK, oh ye of little faith), the ending of Ultimates v2, sorta kinda 52. "Seven Gorillas of Victory!!". The return of Chuck Austen.

6) What's your worst fear for comics in 2006?
"Look, we know that last week's event CHANGED EVERYTHING, but next weeks BIG BIG EVENT will turn the universe around!!!".
