Comics For Christmas

What did you get? What did you give?

For me: the boxed set of Complete Peanuts 1955-58 (actually asked for with a year's notice after getting the 1950-54 box last year), and Playboy 50 Years The Cartoons, which is pretty fucking killer actually. Gorgeous repro, almost all full-page, gorgeous Jack Cole paintings (and gorgeous paintings by people you've never heard of), non-Cat Kliban, LOADS of Feiffer in colour (including Hostileman!), a token Playboy Funnies section including Frank Thorne, Skip Williamson, Jay Lynch, Kurtzman & Downs &al. And while a huge proportion of the cartoons are an excuse to paint tits, they're mostly pretty funny as well! Either on their own merits, or for anthropological reasons, seeing what the editors and cartoonists thought was outre or remarkable in society at the time.

From me: Spider-Man/Human Torch: I'm With Stupid for a ten-year-old nephew, the first colour Bone from Scholastic for a 13-year-old nephew, and Michel Rabagliati's Paul Moves Out for my flatmate.

I gave no comics this year. I am a bad comics booster. Though in the past, I've given collections of SLEEPER and THE GOON and HELLBOY. Will probably try again giving comics next year, but just couldn't manage this year.

I did, however, receive a bunch of stuff off my Amazon wishlist, which makes is easy for the folks who don't know anything about comics to give me stuff that I'm happy with. Ton of Frank Miller (DAREDEVIL, BATMAN: YEAR ONE), some DC archives (CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN and DOOM PATROL) and some other random oddments.

I finally got the 1950-1954 Peanuts box from my wife after a year of putting off getting it for myself. From my daughter, a "Get Fuzzy" page-a-day calendar. In other media, Simpsons and Space Ghost: Coast 2 Coast DVD sets.

big ass hardback coffeetable "Masters of Comic Books" tome. Not quite as indie as that big "GRAPHIC NOVELS" one, but good for the historical side of things. I wonder if they have a section on Wally Wood.

i got the 55-58 peanuts box as well!! i guess it was the cool gift to give this year.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 26 December 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

I really thought I was going to get the Peanuts books this year (I only have the very first one) and yet it doesn't seem to have happened.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 26 December 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

I got "Anywhere But Here" by Tori Miki, which is just fantastic.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 26 December 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I was going to get Summer Blonde for my partner, but it was too much of a "This is for you, but actually its for me-type-present."

Today, however, I'm going to cosy up in a chair with the old Gibbons/Rude World's Finest, which I forgot existed till yesterday.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 26 December 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

For some reason, Rude showing the tread on Batman's boots made me grin like a fool. I liked that book, though not so much for the script.

I got that Will Eisner book on the protocols of Zion! A pleasant surprise, since none of my relatives are very comic-literate and I expressed no interest in it before.

i got the first Age of Bronze trade from Laura H.

i got for myself with birthday money/gift certificates: essential x-men vol. 2 (why did the glue fall off on this? will this occur with all Marvel essentials I get? i wager i can repair it with some sandpaper & tacky glue?), queen & country vol. 3

i got for my fifteen year old cousin Marian: Watchmen (with the knowledge that Rose, 14, will also read it; I got Rose the first Pavement re-issue and the Guided By Voices 'best of + rarities + dvd' box)

i got the first Age of Bronze trade from Laura H.

How many persons are part of the ILX New York Noize Mafia? (Age of Bronze is really good, BTW. I should probably buy the second trade, seeing as my public library is taking so long in acquiring it.)

I got a gift certificate to a well-known national bookstore chain-- will probably be using it to buy Black Hole, Push Man and Other Stories (unless I come up with something better), and Tramps Like Us 6 + 7 (one of the few US-released series manga that I want to keep up with).

Chris F. (servoret), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

Seth's "Wimbledon Green" was an early birthday present, so I think that counts. Haven't read it yet, but it looks swell.

ng-unit, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I got RJM the Little Nemo in Slumberland book, a bio of Windsor McKay that has lots of his other stuff, and the Peanuts 55-58 set. The Little Nemo book is really beautiful.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i also got age of bronze tpb1!! but i bought it for myself. haven't read it yet.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I got ZERO comics, and already had a thread about what comics I gave (Spider-Man/Human Torch, Complete Bone, ASS), but I did get an Xbox (not 360), and the Batman Begins game (and I'm totally gonna buy Hulk Destruction).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

I got the last Alias trade (#4). Awesome.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

oh, i got the batman begins DVD too. and in related news, the first season of He-Mand And The Masters Of The Universe!

and re: ILX New York Noize Mafia... it varies! But me & Laura go back to the days of high school/college in Rhode Island.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

My Christmas comics treasure trove has expanded! A friend of mine handed over to me the first ten or so issues of WARRIOR, which I'd never seen before. Marvelman in its original presentation! V FOR VENDETTA in beautiful black and white! Pressbutton and Laser Eraser!

Okay, maybe not so much them, but you get the picture.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that last Alias book is probably the best thing Bendis has ever written...

I think one of those WARRIOR issues (I want to say #4? the Summer Special?) includes a Marvelman story that never even got reprinted.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that the story where MM goes time travelling or something like that? Nice present, Matt-- I've read those Warrior issues on CBR and much prefer the black-and-white originals to the color reprints.
