Anyone going to it?

kenchen, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I may be going. A lot depends on whether or not the first issue of my book is out by then (the publisher is having...difficulties). I'd say it's about 50-50 at this point.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man, Matt. Wasn't the first issue supposed to be out already? I have it on my Fucking Huge Online Pull List, FWIW - hope things work out!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Dude, don't you read my blog?

Speakeasy has hit a number of stumbling blocks. Originally the book was supposed to be out in November, then early December, then late December, then this week, now currently in limbo and not yet printed (but is still supposed to be, in theory.)

Yeah, I hope things work out, too.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Dude, blogs are so 2004! ;)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

And messageboards are so 1998!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

My internet browsing habits are so Computer Novice.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Ian, do you want to go to this with me?

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

yes.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

let's do an ILC fap.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else in?

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'd definitely be interested. The only people I can talk to about comics are on the west coast.

kenchen, Thursday, 26 January 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there for sure.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Joe Quesda is the proud owner of the gayest haircut ever.

ng-unit, Thursday, 26 January 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I might!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh, xpost, how you ruin me...

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Wow, you get to New York pretty often, Douglas! Are you coming in for the con or is it just fortuitous?

And hooray for FAP. An opportunity to drink and talk about comics with people outside of an internet message board is not to be missed.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:30 (twenty years ago)

FAP? Familial adenomatous polyposis. An inherited condition in which numerous polyps (growths that protrude from mucous membranes) form on the inside walls of the colon and rectum. It increases the risk of colorectal cancer. Also called familial polyposis.

slartibartfast, Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Fancy A Pint. Common parlance on the main ILE board. Silly-sounding perhaps, but the acronym for Want A Drink is even less appealing.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

why not just change it to need a drink?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Because NAD is silly.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

how about "join in, have a drink"?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Schtick it where the sun don't shine, slocker. :D

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 04:11 (twenty years ago)

what kind of places are there for drinking near the con itself? i'd like to be drunk for the actual con, i think.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Friday, 27 January 2006 06:04 (twenty years ago)

My 50-50 for attendance has become about 1% chance of attending. Meh. Maybe next year.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

"i'd like to be drunk for the actual con, i think."
aka COSPLAY

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, an ILC Cosplay FAP would rule all.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Aw, hell - I'd have to be drunk for a week before I even think about getting dressed up.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I call dibs on Mona Lisa Ludatits.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Coming for the con--I'm one of the comics people for Publishers Weekly, with which it's sorta affiliated.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

A search brought up the following two bars, which are very near to the convention site:

Brite Bar
297 10th Avenue, New York, NY 10001
(212) 279-9706

Shutter Bar & Cafe Inc
433 West 34th Street, New York, NY 10001
(212) 279-3446

I know nothing about either bar except that they serve alcohol, which is good enough for me.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, that reminds of my favourite Hemingway scene, in The Sun Also Rises, near the beginning where what's his face goes for a drink with tough guy Jake and gushes about what a great bar they're in and Jake says, "Yes, they have a lot of alcohol."

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

NO COSPLAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Unless it is as Nick Fury/Momus hybrid.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 28 January 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

So let's say yours truly - a born again con virgin, since I haven't been to one in nearly 15 years (OLD) - decides to hit this thing. What the hell should I bring? Comfortable walking shoes? Ashcans? A big freaking bag? & how do things work?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone bought tickets yet? Also, when do you guys want to meet? Sun is better for me.

kenchen, Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

i can do sunday; i'm not gonna be able to make it for saturday or friday cuz i have to work. i just realized: i hope this is not the weekend my mom is coming to visit? it's not president's day weekend is it?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Friday, 10 February 2006 05:24 (twenty years ago)

I can also do Sunday. Why don't we put that down for a FAP, unless there are any objections?

Also, I just bought a pass for the whole weekend, and since Ian is only coming on Sunday I will be wandering around solo on Friday night and Saturday if anyone wants to hang out.

Ian: this weekend is President's Day Weekend.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Also, maybe someone here can answer a question for me about the con: I assume there is limited seating at some of the panels, so if you really, really want to attend a particular panel, what do you do? Get there early and queue up long before it starts? Or is there any way to register for them oafter you get to the con?

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

First come first serve, usually, but unless the conference room is so packed that it becomes a fire hazard (which is unlikely in itself, since the Grant Morrison panel at WonderCon was maybe at half-capacity -- though I have no clue about the Frank Miller panel -- and come to think of it, for heavily impacted panels, usually involving movies and movie stars, those you have to queue up maybe an hour in advance; but when it comes to pure comics panels, there isn't much need to worry -- what panel do you want to sit in on?).

You can wait outside the room -- usually there's another panel going on before -- but generally, it's not that hard to get in. I've not heard of panels ever allowing registration, though.

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I very badly want to sit in on the comics writing panel that involves Brian Michael Bendis. It's one of the first panels on Saturday, at 11 AM I believe.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Hah, you'll have your choice of seat given the lineup and time. Like I said, only movie stars, Frank Miller and possibly Jim Lee can pack them in.

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

jim lee is only good for drawing big boobs and tight butts.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

"[Grant] Morrison said he is writing the series [WildC.A.T.s] to match [Jim] Lee’s strengths, calling it a very shiny pop-art approach that looks and feels very fresh. He said he’s making sure Lee gets to draw the things all fans want to see, “Like the Authority versus the Wildcats, Spartan and Voodoo making love under a blacklight, and things like that”."

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

let's discuss this drinking, please.
i decided that ILCers are the only ILX people i wanna meet anymore, pretty much.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, there are the two bars right near the convention center whose addresses I listed upthread, Brite Bar and Shutter Bar & Cafe Inc. I know nothing about them, or the convention area, but perhaps we could choose one to meet at. If it isn't what we're looking for, we could always move to the other.

What time are you guys thinking? Midday? More towards evening? There are things I would like to attend between 1-3, but I would be happy to drink any other time.

LauraH., Friday, 17 February 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

If I remember, I can look those up in Zagats. Anyways, this is the first I've looked on the schedule. Does anyone else know what they're going to? This is a ridiculously packed weekend for me, so I'm not sure if I can make it on Sat, but I'm interested in the Raw panel, comics writing panel, the graphic novel panel, Steranko on Steranko, and Steranko/Lee/Adams. The 52/Wildstorm/Marvel preview talks I might go to if I were more dedicated to being a Newsarama reader.

kenchen, Friday, 17 February 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Brite Bar: scores 19 out of 30 on all categories and has a projected price of $9.

"A brite light in a dim area, this hip lounge in remote Way West Chelsea has the right stuff for local trenders ever ready to party and flirt; fab lighting and exposed brick lend a Downtown edge eased by yummy specialty drinks and welcoming floor-to-ceiling windows--now if only there was something to see outside."

The other place didn't have a review.

..., Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:57 (twenty years ago)

$9... per drink?

i hate manhattan.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 04:12 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that's only for fruity-ass mixed drinks and such. Aside from being a bar in Manhattan (which is kind of inevitable) it sounds fine to me. When you want to meet there?

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

It looks like I'm probably going to this on Sunday.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

[Grant] Morrison said he is writing the series [WildC.A.T.s] to match [Jim] Lee’s strengths

Why does every writer feel the need to "write to" Jim Lee's "strengths"?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

It's the nice way of saying "I'm writing within Jim Lee's limitations."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda like how if you're going to cast Tom Cruise in your movie, you might as well embrace his Tom Cruise-ness.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I am not sure I can afford this.. I haven't bought a ticket yet, at any rate.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

How much does it cost to be admitted to a convention?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:53 (twenty years ago)

$25/day, yes? i can't go more than one day for because of working.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I can't go at all. Waah.

Rumor is that the professional/guest ratio will be something like 1/3, so get ready to hobnob! You won't be able to swing a dead cat without hitting a famous cartoonist!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Do people know what they're going to? Is early better or later?

kenchen, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 23:36 (twenty years ago)

FAP crossover? The multiverse will never be the same!
http://goodcomics.blogspot.com/2006/02/comics-should-be-good-nycc-meet-up.html

kaptainkrunch, Friday, 24 February 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

So I'm guess this isn't happening?

Gramsciphone, Friday, 24 February 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I still want to drink, but I think on Sunday (as that is the only night I am planning to go.) any bar is good for me. somewhere where i can get a cheap budweiser or pabst or something.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 25 February 2006 05:17 (twenty years ago)

How about Brite Bar Sunday (tomorrow) night, then. It has "signature energy drinks" and also Lite Brites.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 25 February 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)
