I went to my local store today and picked up Batman: LotDK #54 for three bucks.

I haven't read it yet.

It looks pretty though.

!!!~

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You will let me know if it, as a story, is worth tracking down, or if it's simply a trainspotter's find.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't tell him, it's part of the taunting!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I read it and it's good. It's absolutely a Hellboy story, except with, you know, Batman in place of Hellboy. The story has all the Mignola signifiers, as well glimpses of what he developed into the Immortal Serpent Dragons of the Evil Beyond etc. The dialog is just fine for the most part, too bad that guy (Dan Raspler) didn't end up doing the first Hellboy book instead of Byrne.

x-post, oh no, my taunting drawn to a premature close :(

Seeing his art on a Batman title really brought home how uniquely atmospheric it is.

"Seeing his art on a Batman title really brought home how uniquely atmospheric it is."

"Gotham By Gaslight" to thread...

David Nolan (David N.), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotham by Gaslight is exactly what I had in mind when I bemoaned the unavailability in nonspeciality outlets of certain kinds of comics -- Leee, you've read it, right? Aspects of it seem overdone in hindsight only because it birthed the whole Elseworlds thing, but that's forgivable.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jordan!

Tep, yes, I have Gaslight and was underwhelmed. But, it was about $4, so I'm not going to whinge a whole lot about it.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you be underwhelmed! Although, since then, the whole "what if Batman was" / "what if Batman met" thing has been done so many times that I guess Gaslight doesn't have its novelty value anymore.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Gotham by Gaslight was awesome! I had a big Jack the Ripper fixation as a pre-ado, and I also had a Batman fixation and Mignola art!
But yeah, there was nothing exceptional about the story, other than its (then) novelty.
Mignola's part of Action #600 was awesome too, Supes and Manbat underground.

Huck, Friday, 14 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah ok so I will whinge!

Passable writing as noted, though I did find the narrative voice well composed. Flipping through it right now, I immediately notice the coloring -- I find I don't particularly like this David Hornung. Dave Stewart is the secret ingredient, then, of what pushes Hellboy's art to masterpiece status. Also, the swathes of Mignola ink are missing.

one year passes...
i went to comic mart on sunday and picked up a copy for 75p. it's yours if you want it, leee.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 8 May 2006 08:22 (twenty years ago)

That's not very good taunting!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 8 May 2006 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks koogs for the offer, but I bought it for like $10 already.

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

[taunting]
ten dollars! i found one for 75p
[/taunting]

(daniel, will that do?)

ha, no biggie. was, in fact, the only thing i bought at the mart because i didn't have a lot of time and nobody had what i wanted (Promethea #31, Angel and Ape #1). did see almost a complete run of 1602 for 50p each but couldn't remember which three i already had (1, 2 and 4 as it happens).

and the copy of lotdk i saw previous to this one was £6 in gosh. i think it got expensive when hellboy film was released.
