They had a bunch more in long runs, also. I shoulda gotten em all but I didn't have enough cash on me. I might go back tomorrow or the next day; they will probably still be there.. they also had tons of IMAGE/MALIBU titles, and lots of superman and x-men. I need to seriously spend a few hours there someday soon!

p.s. are these worth anything? should i sell them on ebay and just get the trades instead?

oh, and they're all in bags w/ boards, so they're in great shape!!

I rather like having a page of Grant Morrison screed in the back.

Nice find! They're probably "worth" more than cover price, but I couldn't tell you how much-- usually the early GM issues I've seen in back issue bins are priced at $5 and up. I think that the trade reissue might have gutted your chances on eBay-- I see that some assclown there is currently trying to sell a couple of late GM issues for $15 each, but another auction has all three trades currently going for $25. The Bolland covers are nice, but they're not $14's worth of nice (and when I was building up my Animal Man collection a few years ago, I was only paying $3 for those issues-- before the trades came out). Save 'em, I say-- and see if you can find #6-9 at the shop to fill out that first trade's worth of issues. If not, you've got some dandy souvenirs that only put you out an extra $2.50, and the trades are currently going for one-third off the cover on Amazon.

"Screed"? Did GM write some cool intro pages in the back of the first few issues? As cool as his intro to Doom Patrol?

7-9 are definitely there (i hid dem) and 6 might be somewhere. there's almost actually like 7-16 or something. then scattered later issues that i did not bother to collate with the others.

A friend of mine (who writes for 9A, as it happens) seems to have found the fabled "free comic collection". He just bought a guy's entire collection for £15 -- apparently he was leaving for Australia and his mum was going to chuck them out, as mum's are wont. There's nearly every 2000AD up to the mid-80s, complete runs of Swamp Thing, all the old Vertigo titles, etc. Not bad.

I had most of the original issues once upon a time, then sold them on eBay in bulk seven+ years ago (for about $10-20, I think), then bought most of them back on eBay in bulk two+ years ago (for about $10-20, I think). Dunno if you'll get much for the first 5 issues by themselves, tho selling them as a set is the way to go if you're gonna turn them around. FWIW, the series doesn't really take off (for me) until GM gets to the Glaswegian Mirror Master & Bwana Beast & CRISIS!

More respect needed for "The death of the Red Mask"

Amen!

by the time i'm done with this, i project, i'll have most of the issues through the mid-twenties, i think.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Eh, the first four issues are a miniseries as delivered. The fifth is The Coyote Gospel, one of the best single-issue stories ever.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

It'll be a treat if you've never read it before. Probably my all-time favourite comic run, if I'm honest -- slight edge over Doom Patrol because it's so much less patchy. I had a look at it again last year -- hard to believe DC'd let anyone get away with that kind of thing anymore. And the way all the story elements come together after two years -- in the era before trades, too.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I have to say I don't buy into the ONE OF THE BEST SINGLE ISSUE EVER hype, but "The Coyote Gospel" is pretty damn good.

It's not quite as heartbreaking as Chubby's death in Seaguy, or Monsieur Mallah's last words in Doom Patrol, but it's close.

I've got a couple of those Animal Man issues signed by T. Grumm3tt

Heretic! I'd maybe agree, but I can't summon up the same warm regard for A-Man because, inexplicably, I never read it off the stands, despite the fact that I thought that DP was the hottest shit ever and they ran concurrently. Actually, I take that back-- I finally broke down and bought one issue just as the series was wrapping up, but as it was part of a long running storyline I didn't really get into it. Yeah, that's right-- I was buying Power of the Atom when I should have been buying Animal Man instead. Curse my preteen tastes.

Nice! Fuck the trades, then! Any other good slightly off-beat late '80s titles at the shop, or is it a vast wasteland of "hot" books otherwise?

Yeah, I'll say! If it weren't for CBRs, I'd be jealous!

I bought a whole pile of late Animal Mans out of the quarter bin and they weren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be. You're right about the overly long and involved plot though, you pretty much need to read all of them for it to make sense (particularly once Buddy becomes a 6' tall bird).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 09:40 (twenty years ago)

i got 7-16 tonight.didn't have time to dig for #6...but i will.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 12 January 2006 05:52 (twenty years ago)

now we've up to:

1-5, 7-16, 18-24, 26
