Female Issues: Women (Portrayed) in Comics (JLI in particular)

The talk of the Hawk People in JLI over in one of the Infantile Crying threads got me thinking about how they really only let Hawkman in the JLI because they wanted Hawkwoman. (And also to have another foil, since Batman had sorta quit after the Bialya fiasco--probably the most important reason). And that got me thinking about the various women who served in the JLI and how they fit in. From what I've heard, the entire run of the Giffen/DeMatteis League was a struggle against protectionism on the part of other creators ("You're not going ruin MY character by having him/her involved in that nonsense!"), which explains why so many characters had such short tenures in the League. At this early stage of my consideration of this topic, it seems to me that Giffen/DeMatteis did their best to have strong female representation in the League.

In no particular order:

Dr. Light: Never an official member (though she did eventually join JLEuro), this COIE byproduct served to advance the Max Lord plot. She left around #4, just as Booster Gold joined (thanks to M.Lord's machinations). Can't imagine any other creators were eager to use her/protect her from the Yuks (which had yet to even really get rolling).
Black Canary: Represented, along with Batman and Martian Manhunter, a link the glory days of the JLA. I really liked her role in the League, not as serious as Bats and J'Onn, but not as goofy as Beetle & Booster. Obviously, there was no way the strong, smart, authoritative JLI Black Canary could co-exist with the victimized, supporting player, girlfriend Dinah Lance in Mike Grell's disillusionary Green Arrow.
Fire & Ice: The perfect female counterparts to Beetle & Booster, or perhaps perfecter, since neither had ever had their own series, and were not only pretty much blank slates (having first appeared in the not-exactly-character-driven Superfriends TV-tie-in series), but were in no danger of being protected by other creators. Though they played more towards traditional comics cheesecakification of female superheroes, Giffen & DeMatteis rarely let them come across as one-dimensional pin-ups (though Adam Hughes did his best to counter this).
Big Barda: Awesome. One of the most feared warriors of Apokolips trying to fit into Suburbia.
Hawkwoman: Thrill-loving partner of stick-in-mud. The Maguire-rendered scene where Batman recruits the Hawks, and Hawkwoman is all, "I'm joining whether you do or not!" is one of the sexiest bits in DC comics history. A feather is involved.
Dr Fate: Dr. Fate is a lady! Never quite seemed to get past that.
Huntress: "New" character, no doubt the sensical creators of her strip were eager to let this character get some exposure in one of DC's top-selling, but least-respected mags, even though her urban vigilante bit wasn't a great fit.

Huk, are you reading Birds of Prey?!? Black Canary & Huntress are used to great effect! Also, recent issues feature hott Green Arrow AND Batmang action that puts most of their recent appearances to shame. And the new artist (whose name I can't remember) is looking like a nice fit (tho I really wish Joe Bennett stuck around).

Who were the ladies in JLE - Sue D, Power Girl (during her WTF? costume phase), and the Crimson Fox? (Am I missing someone/s?) Aside from Sue D playing off of her hubby & other squares, the female reps overseas weren't nearly as interesting. Having a different scripter (Mr. Gerard Jones) might've had something to do w/ that.

Also notable: The Queen Bee & Ms. Hootenwoofer!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

JLE also had Wonder Woman (at least for the first issue), I can't remember when Dr. Light joined (possibly not until much, much later). AND, they had Wally (Flash) West during his horndog phase.

xpost: INDEED!

Granted, Ms. H was mostly a cipher until she shot Maxwell Lord, but I remember some one-liner sass occasionally.

And OH YEAH do I remember that Hawkwoman feather panel!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

OH, and a terrific, terrific Amanda Waller guest appearance. That whole storyline about the Queen Bee messing with Blue Beetle's brain was probably the absolute highlight of the entire series.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah - it was probably featured the best "serious" moments in the G/D run (tho Despero eviscerating the JL was pretty kewl, too). Also, your definition of "serious" might not involve Blue Beetle IN COSTUME going stabby at AW w/ a kitchen knife, so consider that a caveat.

I would also like to give props for Greg Rucka's pre-IC Wonder Woman (as well as George Perez's post-Legends WW). And all the lovely ladies in Gotham Central. And Brubaker's Catwoman (ESPECIALLY pre-Gulacy).

If that's the pic of ...Bruce Wayne making like Sam Neill making like James Bond, I approve.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

It's the pointillism Exorcist-swipe. And Max Lord was Sam Neill, Maguire did Wayne as Connery (as did Shawn Martinsborough on a not-as-recent-as-all-that run with Rucka on one of the Batbooks).

At this early stage of my consideration of this topic, it seems to me that Giffen/DeMatteis did their best to have strong female representation in the League.

Devil's advocate: That version of the league was filled with 'junk' characters that couldn't hold a series by themselves, and there are more female than male heroes of that nature.

Huk, I bow to your rightitude.

Wasn't gonna post this, but whatever:

As far as I can tell, Marvel's beating the pants off of DC in the Females Worth A Deuce dept. nowadays- She-Hulk & Ms. Jessica Jones lead the pack (bless you Slott & Bendis), w/ the young women of Young Avengers (the Giant-Man ditto - STATURE - & the Hawkeye ditto - I DON'T KNOW) a close second, tho Ms. Hawkeye has a Tortured Assault-Ridden Past that seems to be de rigeur for almost every super-heroine. (See also: Ms. Jones!) The girls in Runaways are also worth a damn. Spider-Woman's getting some Bendis love, but that's a work-in-progress. The X-Ladies, aside from Emma Frost, aren't much to write about (tho Milligan seems to have glommed onto Polaris, thankfully). And Bendis also scores w/ all the ladies in Ultimate Spider-Man (especially Aunt May).

DC's sort of like, "Hey, we've got BOP, we're doing our part, even if Black Canary hasn't actually had a speaking role in Identity Crisis or JLA: Crisis of Third Eye Oh No."
(she's been getting some good/decent page-time in the current End of the JLA run, but still largely an appendage of GA)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Ha - maybe that's why Gail had BC beat the snot out of Deathstroke The Governator (& makes a point to note that it'll be easier to kick said ass w/out the rest of the JLA in the way).

I was just looking for the Hawkses panel I mentioned, and came across a totally bizarre (moving???) page of Oberon on the phone with Black Canary trying to convince her to come back. Somebody should write a really good oral biography about the Giffen/DeMatteis JLI and their dealings with the rest of DC. I assume I've completely inflating the turmoils in my imagination, but it seems like despite very healthy sales, putting that book out was always a struggle.

Anyhoo, here's the Hawks joinging the JLI (the feather thing happened a few panels later).

And's the page w/ Oberon on the phone w/ Black Canary from the same issue (JLI #19) illustrating just how subtle and rich and character-driven JLI was behind it's bwahafacade.

It was a huge step backwards turning Max Lord evil again... although he was always very easy for bad guys to get a brainlock on, so I'm assuming that's what happened this time. (Easier than assuming 'writers were unimaginative'.) Also, Jurgens' first step on the road to writing the JLA was to do the 'Max is desperate and thus evil' plotline. Which has always been the most rubbish plotline.

Seems like things went according to AlexLuthor's plan, huh?

hukl, Saturday, 21 January 2006 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't that Oberon on the phone page from around the time BC was busy getting raped and crucified?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 21 January 2006 03:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. Sadly.
Why oh why did DC not follow through on the my-T awesome Mike W. Barr & Trevor Von Eeden Green Arrow mini of the early 80s with ANYTHING other than Longbow Hunters?
