Anticipate 52 with me

I am more psyched than I'm entirely comfortable with about the 52-related announcements here. I mean, I'm generally an auteurist when it comes to comics, even superhero stuff, so four writers plus a zillion artists doing a 1000-plus-page arc with six major characters who don't have much to do with each other and trying to hit a weekly deadline should turn me right off, but then there's part of me that thinks: well, this is how they did Six Feet Under... and also the part that thinks: Grant Morrison acting as idea guy! Keith Giffen providing visual consistency! Black Adam in love! "Secret Origins" backups by Waid! Anything at all involving Renee Montoya! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS SERIES--!

sigh,

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 4 February 2006 06:23 (nineteen years ago)

Anything at all involving Renee Montoya!

How can people in this day and age still think like this, particularly when the 'anything' has a direct risk of meaning 'being written by Geoff Johns'?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 4 February 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

"Keith Giffen providing visual consistency" hahahaha

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Saturday, 4 February 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

(I was more rude than I meant to be, sorry)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 4 February 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Matthew Perpetua, you get out of Andrew's account RIGHT NOW!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 4 February 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, in a shocking twist that will shake the foundation of my living quarters down to its very joists, I share Douglas' enthusiasm. I have supreme confidence in 3.25 of the 4 heads at the helm (Johns has his oh-so-brief moments, and some of Rucka's superheroics of late have left me feeling mighty low). I love Giffen's layouts. I love the WTF aspect of this whole thing. And, damn it, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 4 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in if for no other reason than that the end of Seven Soldiers and the folderol at Marvel frees up space in my pull list.

Like I've mentioned before, during the school year I can only get my comics every 5-6 weeks (which means I'm more caught up on comics I'm reading friends' copies of...). (Downtown store, 60 parking spots in the area, 40,000 college students with buckets of disposable money.) I don't know if that'll make my 52 experience better or worse, but I guess it'll make minor delays invisible.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 4 February 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

I actually have more faith in Geoff Johns than Greg Rucka. I'm quite enjoying the byzantine stupidosity that is Infinite Sadface, and having not read Queen and Country yet, I haven't really seen anything by Rucka I could whole-heartedly rate. Even Gotham Central, it seems to me, is noticeably better when Ed Brubaker is on it. 52 looks fun, though, as you can never have too many cliffhangers.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 4 February 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm kinda eagerly thrilled about the whole spectacle of it. It's thrillpower, no? Or attempted thrillpower, at least (which might be anti-thrillpower?)(no), but like, to roll out week after week of content, with some guidelines (it all has to align with the OYL results), but no interference from other titles (the cast of 52 is offlimits to the rest of the DCU until it wraps, I think). I expect moments of brilliance, train wrecks, and everything in between. At the very least, it will be a fun experience, if not a COMIC TO LAST THE AGES.

I'll get it in trade.

c(''c) (Leee), Saturday, 4 February 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry, I'm sure the Nerdsamamasboys will do weekly post-mortems where they'll post all the relevant panels so you don't actually have to read the comics, just like they did for the new Captain America issue.

... man, any time I think about a series like this in dollar terms, I start to think I'd be better off just buying the Bone single-volume collection over and over again.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Think of it in terms of weekly installments, though! It's like pennies a day!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

It's dimes a day!

Man, imagine Secret Wars -- plural, not the painted jobbie that would take seventeen years if done this way -- done in 52 weekly installments. Everyone would have to fuck Zsaji.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

And the Wasp & Magneto could have lots of babies!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

A costume an issue for Spidey!

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

New alien symbiote costumes for EVERYONE! Thor's Venom can be called "Ragnarok." They could do a whole confusing nine-issue storyline where everyone's symbiotes bond with everyone else, so you have Wasp bonded to Thor's symbiote, Magneto bonded to Cap's, Dr Doom rolling up the sleeves on Galactus-Venom so it'll fit ...

Just read advance photocopies of the first issue and rough scripts for the next four. I am, as I anticipated, liking this a whole hell of a lot--the chaotic everything-at-once grandness of IC/CW without the Oh Nooo/You Monster I'll Kill You For This sadfaceness, and the multiple plots all seem to be under control and heading somewhere interesting. Plus: Grant Morrison awesome high-concept overload ahoy! And lots of suspense, which is nicely done considering the format prohibits cliffhangers as such.

Will post more when I can do so without spoilerizing.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

Don't tempt me, Doug! I was ready to swear off the whole thing after IC.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 4 May 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 4 May 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hubba hubba.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

What's the plan for putting this together in trades? (and when does the IC trade come out for that matter?)

asdf, Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty DC's said they won't announce any 52 trade action until it's run its course. It sounds like they're really focusing on playing up the whole serial aspect of the format and consider it their favour to retailers by getting nerds into comic shops EVERY WEEK!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Re: "...Man, imagine Secret Wars -- done in 52 weekly installments..."

In the UK, Secret Wars actually was a weekly comic, which they managed to do by pulling in all the tie-in issues, Secret Wars II, and all its tie-ins.

I didn't read it myself, so for all I know there might have been other stuff reprinted as back ups, but the UK still got Secret Wars in umpteen (I vaguely remember over eighty issues)weekly installments.

David Simpson (David Simpson), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

By "the format" I mean that the story is organized week-by-week, so everything in issue #2 happens during week #2, etc.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh okay, fair enough.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 4 May 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

Back-ups included Alpha Flight, Zoids and... was it Rocket Raccoon? I can't remember. Anyway, when Secret Wars II got going, there was enough material to have a whole Marvel comic reprinted every week and still leave out Thor and a couple of other side-trips.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

The other back up was the ICEMAN MINI! Somewhat of a WTF choice. (as opposed to Rocket Raccoon, erm.)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I have an issue of Hulk with Rocket Raccoon! They fight Space Clowns!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Roffles from the Midtown Comics e-newsletter:

"The missing year begins here... in real time! Can the DC Universe survive a year without Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman (well, obviously yes, since we have One Year Later ruining all our storylines, but let's pretend for a second that we don't know that)? Who will rise to defend the world? Find out this and more every Wednesday for the next whole year. Just so you know, though, we are taking bets as to when 52 skips a week. We think Week 12 will be the week."

The Creeper: Up In It - Chuck Austen (W) / Jim Balent (A)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Back just before Lex Luthor became President, he bought out the Daily Planet and was going to run it into the ground. But Lois Lane made some deal with him (I don't remember what, but I'm sure if it was a movie, he'd be played by Redford and she'd be Demi Moore--or Dudley Moore!) to save it. Then, during, um No Man's Land, Luthor wanted to horn in on Gotham and take it over (since real estate was suddenly real cheap, since Gotham had been DEVASTATED by an earthquake--hmmm, sorta like the first Superman movie), but Bruce Wayne (aka Batman--no, really!) wasn't having it, and they got into a billionaire boys slap fight and, um, eventually, Wayne bought the Planet out from under Luthor.
What's interesting about this is not just that Batman is now Superman's BOSS, but also Batman is Lois Lane's boss. And if you've read a hundred Lois Lane comics in the last week, like I have, you'd know that there's long been a deep, rarely spoken (though often acted upon in IMAGINARY STORIES) LOVE for Lois in Batman's heart.

Via the DC comics website I find a Washington Post 'review' with the following quote:

"Because this isn't about grabbing a costume or someone giving you powers. ...It's about what you earn, and using that to help others."
- Steel, a Superman cohort, lectures his niece for wanting to opt out of disaster relief

Early material in the Spot The Bits Geoff Did competition.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

The entire series is disaster relief!

I think you added an extra word at the end there, Andrew.

I am disappointed BTW that this series is apparently not going to feature PROPER CLIFFHANGERS.

I'm sure someone will start a website with funny (or "funny") weekly reviews of 52. Or an ILC thread. I'll just read that.
