Is this current Captain America book worth my $2.99 a month?

Okay, I know general consensus is that he's only slightly less lame than Millie the Model, but Captain America was my favorite as a boy, and maintains a cherished spot in the old memory banks. Gruenwald's run was pretty damn good for a while there, especially to the twelve-year-old me. I got out of comics basically for good in '94, but during a brief relapse in 2003 I picked up a few issues of the Chuck Austen series, and, well, damn, were they horrible. Seemed like it was written by somebody whose only exposure to the concept of story-telling was through Metal Gear games, or something. But so, I've heard a few good words about the current series, and was wondering if anybody here had anything good to say about it. I feel another relapse coming on, and Cap's near the top of my list of books to check out.

Sorry if there's already a Captain America thread - I did a search, and after fifteen or so minutes it errored off.

YES YES YES YES YES! But don't buy the latest issue yet, unless you want everything from the past year-plus spoiled.

I loved the highlights of the Gruenwald run and I think we must be about the same age, so I would have been loving it the same way, if you see what I mean. Brubaker's is definitely the best I've read since then, although Priest's Captain America and the Falcon was good too (in a different way).

But yes, don't read the latest issue yet and really, read as little as possible about the last year.

Everything in yr post points to you enjoying the current run (but yeah, see if you can get all 14 issues for MAXIMUM satisfaction).

Alright, hopefully I can track some down on my lunch-break. Have they put out a trade of the early issues yet?

DING (but don't read the buyer reviews)

Oh, geez, $22? Looks like I'll be using Amazon and not NEC. This totally ruins my lunch-break plans.

Not that I'm recommending it (nudge, wink), but DC++ might be an option to get caught up.

Eight issues in, and everything's pretty great thus far. Thanks for the recommendations.

Is Captain America Jewish?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

er, Isn't Captain America Jewish?

two weeks pass...
So I READ THIS. And yes, it's a good one. The shift from unrealistic to ever so slightly less unrealistic, as heralded/highlighted at the end of issue one, is handled well. And the big reveal, while not so shocking in the storyline, dredges up the past without mucking things up too much. It's not entirely outside the bounds of comic logic for a certain unnamed long-thought-dead character to act in the fashion depicted in this series. And thankfully Brubaker doesn't make Cap a tool or a cipher. So, yes, good work, and thanks for the recommendation.

p.s. anyone who hasn't read this yet, pick up the latest issue for some classy stage-setting.
