Snark-infested encyclopedia of comics from Dark Horse (scored from the libary yesterday and stayed up until 2 this morning browsing), skews toward underground/independent stuff when not dishing Golden Age dirt.
Gives Silver Age & beyond spandex short shrift (big exception, Silver Age Kirby), but makes up for it with so much other stuff. It's almost like the book equivalent of ILC.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly new ILC game. Where do those letter come from.

I'll start:
A = Action Comics
E - ArchiE
Q - AQuaman
S - Superman
W - SpaWn
X- X-Men

Pete (Pete), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

F- Flash
G - Groo?
I - the SpirIt
Y- Sin City

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

L = Little Lulu
N = Metal MeN?
T = Terry & The Pirates
V = Prince Valiant?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

D - Donald Duck
G - Grimjack?
M - MAD
N - Metal Men?
V - Prince Valiant?
Z - Zap Comix

(couple of x-posts there)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

O = Little Orphan Annie?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

C - CRIME DOES NOT PAY

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

I want to say the P is for Pep Comics, but IGS says nein.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

From a quick GIS, G is indeed Groo.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

T - Terry And The Pirates

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to think that M was for MADMAN despite knowing better or am I just imagining that Allred used a similar font?

xpost, WHEE (because you can see the lower case "g" from "Sergio" in the frame)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Is the J from Jughead?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

P is Pogo, isn't it?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the K is Krazy Kat.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

R seems to be from the word CRIME, but not CRIME DOES NOT PAY.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

So, we're missing

B
H
R
U

I'm pretty sure N isn't Metal Men though, most of the covers I can find only have the Ms with rivets in them.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

B looks like it's from a Jungle Girl style comic.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Bwana Babe!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that J is from Jughead. It looks more like the J in Jungle Comics.

B = Boy Comics?
H = some pre-Code book with Horror in the title
R = complete cRumb
U = ?

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Is F really Flash? The second letter would have to be a lower case L is so (I could well be, I'm only used to more recent flashiness).

I think the R is from Captain America.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

DO NOT DOUBT ME LEST I HOTLINK YE THE PROOF

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the F is from Flash Comics circa the 40s - dunno if it's DC's Flash, or another company, tho!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Good spots on Boy and Crumb. The two Js are very similar, and both look possible.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

All-American Comics maybe?
xpst

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, it's not Golden Age Flash, and doesn't seem to be Silver Age Flash either (both logos were tilted) and All-Flash was cursive.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

both logos were tilted at other angles than that F, that is.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

(Ha ha, Alpha Flight). Not really.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Close enough

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

N = plaNet comics
J = confirmed as Jungle comics
F = close to Fight Comics' logo, but I'm not quite sure (haha AF beat me to it!)

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

That U is tickling my hindbrain something fierce, but I'm not coming up with a title.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

bUana Babe!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

aha!

famoUs fUnnies!

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I was hoping the H was from Treehouse of Horror, but no dice.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 February 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I own this!. Bought it a looooooong tim ago from Amazon, was disappointed at first because it wasn't a "normal" comic encyclopedia, nowadays is one of my favourite books on comics. Silver Age gets fair treatment!, great Schwartz and Weisinger entries. Besides the anecdotes are priceless and it's really focused on 40's/50's comics.

The sources for the letters are inside the dust jacket, I believe. I can post them later, when you grow bored =).

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

The Moebius entry is GREAT and so's the Grothisms sidebar.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Silver Age & beyond spandex short shrift = No Pol Manning, No Credibility = This Book Doesn't Reinforce My Childhood Beliefs, WAAAAA!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

My childhood beliefs need some blowing up. I'll make an ILL request for this when I go out later.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to think that M was for MADMAN despite knowing better or am I just imagining that Allred used a similar font?

The Madman logo is deliberately based on the Mad logo, but with (get this) -man stuck on the end.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's what I was insinuating. The thing is, he used the OG Mad logo, whereas I grew up with latter-day Mad logo, so I natuarally associate the OGML with Madman, since that's from MY kidhood.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Got this from the library, enjoying it a lot. H is Horrific, R turns out to be G.A. captain ameRica, not Complete Crumb.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...
I thought the "N" was the Metal Men too, but could it be ...IroN maN?

Rex Havoc, Friday, 16 June 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yay, I was right about the R!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 June 2006 06:51 (nineteen years ago)
