I kind of wish mainstream titles like Amazing Spider-Man and Green Lantern ran backup stories by indie artists so we could get more fresh takes on these great characters out there.

Whee! YES.

Ha! I was just about to cut & paste that!

Not that I MIND having a Kickers Inc. story in the back of the latest New Avengers, but...

Oooh, I really like that back up strip idea. Although I feel like the back up strips could probably end up overshadowing certain talents...

explain, please

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

Well, in the hypothetical future I just imagined... I just meant the backup strips could possibly overshadow the "main" comic (especially if said main comic is rubbish). I put it badly.

Also: the indie artists could well be hungrier for success, and - initially at least - things could be lopsided because they're all trying so hard for their one shot at larger success. But eventually: healthy competition!

Um... maybe. I think my hypothetical future is probably a bit wrong. I got a bit ahead of myself.

Okay, that's what I thought (the backup strips could possibly overshadow the "main" comic), and was puzzled because you made it sound like a bad thing.

When I talked to Chester Brown a few years ago, he said he had a Batman project in the wings, but as far as I know, nothing's ever come of it.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 17 February 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, I think that would be good! I just didn't want to sound like I was assuming all the indie guys would be great.

And I was kind of thinking about why publishers/other creators might be reticent about such a thing happening.

Add to that we're also entering an new FINITE era of ever-tightening editorial control of the main publishers prized properties.
