What I am POTENTIALLY looking forward to:

- the *sniff* last issue of Mahnke Batlips!
- more quality JLAing in Classified!
- Whedon & Cassaday return to X-ville!
- Bru-Cap!
- Slott Thing!
- Iron Irving Frazier!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

BATMAN #650 - Jason Todd revealed! Or nearly revealed! Or, awwww, who gives a fuck? COUNTDOWN TO BATMAN ANNUAL # something. I'm sure Mahnke & Nguyen will get cover credit but not actually have any art in the issue.
GREEN LANTERN #9 - Batman v. Green Lantern! ONLY ONE WILL WALK AWAY (the other will either fly or drive)
JLA CLASSIFIED #17 - Gail Simone! JLGL! Klaus Janson! Hypothetical Women! (the only kind that dates me!)
CAPTAIN AMERICA #15 - A very special issue of Captain America, where the daughter of a certain dead/not-dead villain discovers the shocking truth in: My Skull, My Self.

WHERE IS THE ROCKETO TRADE PROMISED FROM IMAGE IN FEB???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Astonishing X-Men
The Thing
Lucifer
Solo
Polly & teh Pirates

Not bad!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

And now the inevitable "Where is SEVEN SOLDIERS???"

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

DEC052004D I HEART MARVEL OUTLAW LOVE $2.99

http://www.comicreaders.com/images/pictures/canceled-westerns4.jpg

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm tempted to give Green Sciver one more go-around before officially cutting bait, but BATFITE! doesn't really intrigue me. Unless it's gonna be a "ONE PUNCH!" affair. God, please let it be so.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

You mean ONE PUNCH like Hal Jordan is gonna punch Batman and then Batman will wake up one year later as a Bacharach fan?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, A Distant Soil. I remember that from WaRP, if it's the same one.

Anyway, Lucifer, LOSH, Amazing if the girl picks up the comics without me since I haven't pushed it off the pull list yet, Astonishing, Thing, UltiSpidey.

What in the name of Rao is:

DEC052017D MARVEL MILESTONES DRAGON LORD SPEEDBALL & MAN IN THE SKY $3.99

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Even better, Huk! & that would segue nicely into the Grant-Mo-A-Go-Go run!

Tep, that is some WTF melange of reprints that seem to have some tangential connection to current Marvelous goings-on - for instance, they spit out some 3-fer last month that featured reprints related to Nextwave (involving Bloodstone, Fing Fang Foom, and the blueprints to the Helicarrier).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Right, 7S goes WEEKLY from March TILL THE END OF TIME

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

My idea would be awesome, and it would render Infinite Crisis to little more than Window Dressing (salad dressing?) in terms of THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME UNTIL THEY ARE AGAIN.
Hell, they could even have Batman back to near-normal for the OYL, and do a parallel 52 series following Batman-the-Softie trying to find his way!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Also, let me big-up Jordan's mention of Polly & the Pirates, the heartwarming tale of a prissy charm school girl who discovers she's the daughter of a notorious pirate queen (& the treasure-hunting high-seas shenanigans that said revelation kicks off). From Courtney Crumin's Ted Naifeh & Oni Press. It's awesome.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile, my own FINITE CRISIS: we are tightening up the comics budget severely (*longtime readers may recall that I am basically eating away my savings as short stories and high school textbooks do not pay enough to make rent while waiting for editors to pounce on novels -- ed.) and I think I'm going to have to pick between Marvel U Spidey and Ultimate Spidey, unless I want my pull list to be Spidey-heavy. WHAT TO DO.

xpost; by the Hostess whores of Hoggoth, what does Speedball have to do with current Marvelous goings on? Is he the Blue Beetle of Civil War?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.artiference.com/pcp/images/covers/speedball_2.gif

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe Ellis is going to have Speedball join Nextwave in time to get VD by canoodling w/ catholic school girls from Mother Superior's Rectory of Immaculate Mayhem.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

My vote: if forced to choose between Marvel U Spidey & Ultimate Spidey, I vote for Ultimate Spidey, because Ultimate Deadpool & make-out sessions w/ Kitty Pryde trump Spidey-Armor v2.0 and wrist-kebobs.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

It would have been kind of great if his Alias appearance had been the last anyone heard of Speedball.

I haven't even heard of this Dragon Lord dude, assuming he's no relation to Dragon Man (due for an Awesome Andy restyling, not an Abomination restyling). And I'm usually pretty good at obscure Marvel. I remember Spot! And Madcap! And that park ranger turned Jesus freak ecoterrorist in the Cap's-not-Cap Gruenwald run!

I love Peter/Kitty. I think I'm leaning strongly towards Ultimate.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait, I found him: a Wolfman-Ditko creation, with talking crotch. Well, I lose a Zombie point.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

OMG the site doesn't allow me to right-click! I was gonna cut & paste the guy's powers, and then add on "with his talking crotch." LAME!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, if I had a web page with some guy's talking crotch as drawn by Steve Ditko, I'd disable right-clicking too.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Speedball, FWIW, was part of the recent New Warriors mini that was written by the guy (Zeb Wells) partially responsible for the FF / Iron Man Big In Japan mini.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 20 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

Astonishing X-Men, X-Men, Legion. Nice, I'm excited to read all three of them. Very curious to see how Whedon handles the post-Decimation status quo. It's kinda like he's dropping in a full season after where he left off.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

You mean ... ONE YEAR LATER?

STOP READING SUPERGIRL!!!!

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Har - I meant to add it when Rucka's run started, but didn't realize #5 hadn't come out yet. I IS SHOT.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Quite a week, esp. indie-wise:

BATMAN #650--in which they try to wrap up everything before the OYL jump
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #15--didn't they do this ending already...?
WONDER WOMAN #226--farewell, farewell
PUT THE BOOK BACK ON SHELF BELLE & SEBASTIAN ANTHOLOGY GN--I really hope this is good
I HEART MARVEL OUTLAW LOVE--mmmmmmaybe
BIG QUESTIONS #8 (MR)--Anders Nilsen's not-like-anything-else comic about birds
JUDGE DREDD COMPLETE CASE FILES VOL 1 TP --this is the first Dredd phone-book, isn't it? Can't WAIT to read this
LUBAS COMICS & STORIES #7 (MR) --I will follow Beto anywhere he wants to go
FOLLOWING CEREBUS #7 --this is turning into a pretty fascinating magazine about the craft of comics in general

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, i didn't see that a new Big Questions was coming out. i don't have all of the past issues, but the ones where i was On The Boat (2-5ish?) were great fun! i think his art is some of the best in indie world.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

nothing but Following Cerebus for me

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

CATWOMAN #52 - Selina killz the Black Mask stone dead SHOCKAH.
JLA CLASSIFIED #17 - Gail Simone FEISTY WOMAN FITE spectacular.
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #15 - "THE STORY YOU THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER SEE!" apparently.
LUCIFER #71 - Two 2-parters to go, as Mike Carey tidies up the loose ends. I think this one is set back in the club from the earliest issues.
SOLO #9 - The guy from Gotham County Line (whatever that is) does an EC styled SOLO. Could be good, and there's not much else this week so I might as well.
WONDER WOMAN #226 - G'bye!
PVP #23 - I like to be mildly amused sometimes.
FANTASTIC FOUR #535 - More Thing/Hulk FITEING. Yay!
I HEART MARVEL OUTLAW LOVE - the 'I Heart' series has been patchy, but good enough to keep buying.
IRON MAN THE INEVITABLE #3 - Fraser Irving goodness? Yes please.
SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE #3 - "Is Harry using Lindsay to get back at MJ, or is something far more sinister at hand?" WHY ARE THERE ONLY TWO OF US BUYING THIS?
THING #4 - The Thing stays in a watches a dog. No, really.
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #90 - Is it just me, or has the Silver Sable arc really dragged? Still, Ultimate Vulture makes up for it, I think.
ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS HULK #2 - Nope, just FITEING.
X-MEN 183 - More Milligan Apocalypse. Hmm.
FOLLOWING CEREBUS #7 - what Douglas said.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm confused, I thought the Thing mini was over?

JLA Classified
Legion
*Lucifer
Teen Titans Go
*Astonishing X-Men
I Heart Marvel
Marvel Spotlight (? what's the deal with these?)
*Thing
*Polly & The Pirates

(* money will actually change hands for these)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

the Dan Slott Thing is an ongoing, not a 3-issue mini

(...?)

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, I thought the first three issues were sort of nothing, and for some reason I'm more annoyed at the idea that they were supposed to be the start of an ongoing than a trifling little miniseries.

I was just asking what the Marvel Spotlight was, is it like Solo? I noticed it last month when it was Warren Ellis & someone I didn't care for, but I'm big on both of the creators this time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Marvel Spotlight is, um, I think, more of a fanzine type of thing with interviews and preview artwork.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Douglas, did you have knowledge that yer Believer piece was gonna be responded to in this ish of Following Cerebus? Being as I find Dave's prose, at this pointl to be so vague and impenetrable, I can't decide if he was ultimately pleased with yer piece or not. Hard to tell, since he seems bewilded that you, clearly a Marxist-feminist, would praise his work so highly... odd.

In addition to what I listed upthread, I also got Inevitable Iron Man and Solo. I really liked the central piece in Solo; does anyone know if it's about any real life events?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I actually had no idea that it was going to be responded to at all--or that Dave had even seen it--until one of my editors at the Believer emailed me today to say "uh, you might want to pick up the new Following Cerebus."

I find it kind of hilarious that he thinks I'm an "avowed atheist." And that I drink. Reminds me a little of the scene in "High Society" where Cerebus is filling the soldier with rage about the Hsiffies drinking their delicate snobbish drinks with their pinkies in the air...

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 23 February 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

Write in to the letter column, Douglas!

I read Dave's reply in the pub tonight so I don't remember too clearly but he seemed to do his usual (these days) trick of getting distracted from actually addressing the text by fighting his bugbears. The Buffy feature in the issue suffered much worse from this though, to the point where even with the follow-up interview I'm not sure if it was worth running.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

Batman #650: FUCK OFF. Lame ending to Winick's otherwise pretty enjoyable run. Eric Battle did a decent job on a recent Green Arrow fill-in, but here he JimLees it up. I do give him credit, however, for doing a semi-original (if not necessarily GOOD) take on the Joker. C
Green Lantern #9: FUCK OFF. Lameness all around. EVS's strengths aren't really played to, the whole Batman FACEOFF/MAKEUP is perfunctory, and just generally blargh. The only decent thing is when Salaak tells Hal Jordan that everybody hates him. And WTF, doesn't Johns read JLA? No way is Green Arrow's number on Batman's speed dial. Batman probably doesn't even have speed dial, because he's fucking Batman. He can remember shit. That's his power. C-
JLA: Classified #17: Less impressive than last issue, hopefully this is all set-up for a butt-load of gee-whizery in the rest of the run. Enjoyable mostly by association to JLA:C #16. B
Captain America #15: I think part of what I like about Brubaker's Captain America series is that he doesn't really treat Steve Rogers like a star. He treats him like a character in the larger narrative. So he can get away with issues like this, where Cap appears only in flashback. Guest artist maintains Epting's tone (though maybe the colourist has more to do with that). A
Superman Chronicles Vol. 1: "You're not fighting a woman now!" The idea that a major metropolitan newspaper would send a reporter to cover the breaking news of a man beating his wife probably tells us more about Jerry Siegel than we want to know, but it's a nice thought, that domestic violence could be so rare to that its mere occurance would be newsworthy. Looking forward to reading beyond the first story.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

PLEASE NOTICE THAT I SUCCESSFULLY RESISTED BUYING SUPERGIRL. NEXT MONTH I MUST SUCCEXUALY RESIST BUYING GREEN LANTERN. SORRY HAL, SHOULDA STAYED DEAD.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

WE ARE WITH YOU IN YOUR HOUR OF NEED, HUK.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

also, i think cap'n america was amazing. i love sadism.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Is that the name of that Bane lookalike?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha no, i don't know what his name is! i meant.. just.. in general. i thought he was treating the red skull's daughter very... sadistically.

also, JLA classified didn't do so much for me this month. I had trouble remember the previous issue, and it's at Laura's so I couldn't re-read. But I do like Starro The Conqueror. I really hope the despot/guerillas plot goes well. it could go bad so easily.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Bane lookalike = Crossbones! (Brock Rumlow?)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

The Flash's last words this week are something like "HAHAHAHAHA!" and, er, "Huk."

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Bouze got in the way of reading anything much (although no Solo, JLA:C or Thing - victims of shop cutbacks I think - and I did buy the first issue of Warlord).

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #15 - A great issue, where it turns out the Legion solved the first 'Crisis' (the JSA/JLA league of two worlds thing), the first 'real' Crisis (and you thought it was Flash! FULES!)and are REBORN IN THE FUTURE NOT OF THEIR MAKING!!1!1! prior to the Supergirl related relaunch after 1001YL. The letter column is very up and down though, with the final joke telegraphed very early on.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

This has nothing to do with shipping comics, but heads up Americans (and Canadians?): tonight's rerun of Dinner For Five on IFC is the comicsfan-friendly Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Stan Lee, Mark Hamill, J.J. Abrams episode.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

CATWOMAN #52 - Careers wildly into OYL territory with a final plot which will undoubtedly be completely retconned during 52 and announced as not having happened. I WANT MY MONEY BACK ALREADY.
LUCIFER #71 - Feels like a title winding up. I WANT MY MONEY BACK ALREADY.
WONDER WOMAN #226 - Is a title winding up. I WANT MY MONEY BACK ALREADY.
PVP #23 - Should be a title winding up. I WANT MY MONEY BACK ALREADY.
FANTASTIC FOUR #535 - There's a big Hulk/Thing FITE, then what happens in the lead-up to Planet Hulk is predicted by Ben. Which would have been cool HAD IT NOT HAPPENED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. JMS GET ONE CALENDAR.
I HEART MARVEL OUTLAW LOVE - a full length story this week, with The Answer trying to express his love for Ruby Tuesday while Bullseye is trying to kill him. Great stuff.
SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE #3 - I HATE LINDSAY. If I was at school with her, I'd go out with her just so I could dump her in a humiliating way.
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #90 - Ultimate Vulture great, rest of book not so.
ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS HULK #2 - If "TOFURKEY NOT FUNNY!" isn't the best panel published this year, I'll eat my hat. Not that I wear one.
X-MEN 183 - This is where I realise I don't "get" X-Men in the same way you guys do.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Aldo, that issue of X-Men is maybe not the most representive issue ever. It's basically Peter Milligan doing a surreal tongue-in-cheek version of 90s X-comics.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

That's why I think I don't get it. I've tried, across this, Grant's NXM, the various writers on UXM and I just can't see what the appeal is.

(Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the writing and art, but they're just so... forgettable.)
