Final Night - The Good DC Crossover Event

Tom sez: one of my favourite crossover stories ever and full of cosmic winter stuff

Borrows the plot from a classic Legion of Super-Heroes story, A GIANT UNSTOPPABLE COSMIC CREATURE IS HERE TO EAT OUR SUN, but keenly keeps the focus on characters and NOT A SINGLE SHOWDOWN AT THE DAWN OF TIME.
Lex Luthor meets Braniac 5, Superman gets a chill, Hal Jordan weeps like a camel, and Guy Gardner tries to get drunk. I haven't read too many of the actual crossover issues, but the main minseries is quite good, self-contained (with the exception of the Parallax Special, which isn't ALL THAT necessary), and the art is sufficiently sadfaced w/o being SADFACE.

The only bad thing about it is that it's one of three (or is it FOUR) crossover minis which boils down to "What on earth do we do about Hal Jordan?"

I wish Karl Kesel would write more. Though maybe not for DC - if I was KK I'd be seriously annoyed by what theyve done to poor old Superboy.

The only bad thing...
Well, of course, that was why I was interested in it in the first place. But of the various OMGHJWTF EVENTS, this one is easily the best, because it tried to close the book (BUT I WOULDN'T LET THEM!).

FWIW, KK is writing some OMG SPECIAL FF one-shot COMING SOON where SOMEONE DIES! AND EVERYTHING IS CHANGED 4EVAH OMG!

OMG!

Well, I guess the other comics "DEATH IN THE FAMILY" is hogwash now, so HAVE AT 'ER!

(will Johnny punch the Universe?)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

No, but The Thing will eat a hoagie.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

OH MAN, How much better would the F4 movie have been if Thing was played by Cosby?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Denise?

Whoops - COSBY, not CROSBY.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

What was nice about The Last Night (or was it Final Night) was the clear depowering of Superman (though am I right in thinking it led to Elctro-Supes) and the genuine feeling of hopelessness for the ultra-powered good guys. It was both a threat we could understand and a threat which threatened them.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

actually david crosby would have made a lot of sense.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I guess that means:

Mr. Fantastic = Young
Human Torch = Stills
Invisible Woman = Nash

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Galactus = Roger McGuinn, duh

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Just to rerail: This site does a pretty decent job summarizing all the bizz-whang-poof x-over madness of the 80s / 90s / 00s.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

To rerail - the only bit of that I saw was the Hitman issue, which just has the entire cast lock themselves in a bar and wait while telling character-defining tales to each other. It's pretty much the best single Hitman issue there is, as well...

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Nah, the Superman issue of Hitman - that's the one.
