Is this supposed to be hot stuff? The true spiritual sequel to DKR? How was the first issue? Is Pee Pee a dirty indie hottie?

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

It's like a DKR/Y1 Mashup. The first issue was great but not too, y'know, revealing. BLOODPOUNDING.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like I am going to buy two issues of each then!

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

My one complaint: eff a Bookshelf Format. I want my pamphlets floppy!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'd be much more crazy in love with this if I wasn't paying 8 or 9 Cdn dollars for each installment.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind paying $6 for Paul Pope. I just want to be able to comfortably read the book in bed while lying on my stomach. Goddamn it.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of which, I am having so much trouble finding a comfortable way to stretch out on my sofa and read Rocketo (but I don't mind suffering since it's so gorgeous and fun).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I can't find this anywhere. The dude at my local comics store claims that a) retailers underestimated interest in the product (probably based on Paul Pope sales, not Batman sales) and b) DC isn't planning on reprinting #1 until the trade. Then he gave me this total cock-and-bull story about how it's "too expensive" for publishers like DC to reprint special-format comics. Uhhhhhhh....

I'm pretty psyched about the Paul Pope coffee table book, though.

ng-unit, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

the Comic Destroyer, Paul Pope

awesome

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

If Paul Pope is destroying comics, then goddamn but they NEED to be destroyed.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

You alliterative types stick together, huh?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

It's cause we're all someone's SEKRIT IDENTITY!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I haven't read THB but I keep hearing that Pope has crazy objectivist leanings! This explains some of the comic stuff I've read of his, but it still amuses me.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:17 (twenty years ago)

The action scene at the start of issue 1 is fantastic - great craft, great pacing. His stuff is just lovely. And he seems to be improving as a writer. Issue 2 a definite purchase for me tomorrow.

David N (David N.), Thursday, 16 March 2006 01:46 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Is this set in the FUTURE?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 30 March 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

yes. 2039 I think. I love the combination of things like casually showing a holographic projection coming out of a woman's fingertips with batman's costume basically being a sweatsuit and surplus combat boots.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 31 March 2006 06:01 (nineteen years ago)

is it brujce wayne?

shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad (chaki), Friday, 31 March 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

WE DON'T KNOW YET. But Robin SMOKES.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

I just want to be able to comfortably read the book in bed while lying on my stomach.I just want to be able to comfortably read the book in bed while lying on my stomach.

Where is ILC's "What do you look like while lying on your stomach?" thread?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 31 March 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

The Robt. Van Mapplethorpe Coffee Table Book of ILCivilians Lying On Their Stomachs hits bookstores this May!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 31 March 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
so.. this was awesome. paul pope is great. the artwok was so chaotic yet it worked amazingly. i still dont know who batman is :(.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

I was happy that he left it open at the end, as if he might do more of it!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

i still dont know who batman is :(.

what, are you dense? are you retarded or something? he's the goddamned batman.

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

lol

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 07:04 (nineteen years ago)

TPB soon, I hope.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

I imagine that there will be an HC first to soak the Bat-fanboys for their hard-earned sheckels. Then perhaps a resonably priced paperback. In a year.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

They'll probably load it with some awesome sketches though. But I won't buy it. Cuz I have the floppies.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

ANY OTHER PAUL POPE RECOMMENDATIONS?

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

SOLO, 100%, um, what else is there?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

And if you like Jon Spencer: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0007ULNIQ.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(i saw them last fall, and got the t-shirt, because, PAUL POPE!)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'd recommend 100%. It's something of a nineties Wong Kar-Wai film in comic form - urban fear and giddy romanticism portrayed with frenetic energy. Plus a scene where 32 teapots reach their boiling point in unison - 's cool.

PLUS - his issue of SOLO is a fine piece of work. W/ Jack Kirby OMAC and more Batman.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

100% is probably his strongest story. Works like THE ONE TRICK RIP-OFF and ESCAPO are beautiful but not as substantial (or as successful) as 100%. I was a big fan of his THB work, back in the day, but the floppies are impossible to find, though you can get a hold of some of the GIANT THB tabloids still (and they're pretty awesome, though again not as ambitious as 100%). His issue of SOLO was great, though I had to wonder why he'd go and "cover" OMAC #1 (but then I thought his slice of life story about NY was the high point of the book.)

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah - I agree with you about "EN ESTA ESQUINA", Matt - it really is a dose of pure intimacy. I think I've read it once every few weeks since I got the ish.

And the question I asked myself afterwards is "why NOT cover OMAC #1?" And then everything made sense.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

Then perhaps a resonably priced paperback. In a year.

More like 100 years!

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

Heavy Liquid, his previous Vertigo outing before 100%, was pretty good.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

So what's the deal; does anyone know if there's going to be more of this?

Dan i., Friday, 16 June 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

im hoping for a #0 with an origin story!!

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Origin? What origin? He's Batman!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose if DC threw money at Mr. Pope, he'd continue it. There's certainly enough of a world to keep running with.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 17 June 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

It did VERY good in sales - especially for a deluxe format book - so there's a good chance that we may see more.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Saturday, 17 June 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...
This is really, really good.

SPOILER

It seemed like he was leading up to an explanation of why Batman/Bruce is, you know, immortal, and I was a little disappointed when one wasn't given. But I guess any actual explanation would have been even more disappointing.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 26 January 2007 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's like Children of Men, only with Batman!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 26 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

The only thing that could've improved Children of Men - fake fangs.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 26 January 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

That would explain the "infertility" problem.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

(that's a vagina dentata joke, btw)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

I was gonna make a VD comment (OMG VD!), but figured it'd either be apparent, or thee originator would append.
