It's Easter weekend and I'm sitting on the internet posting about Doctor Who and comics. Hm. Absolutely nothing for me this week (more Civil War promos, but no Actual Civil War), and no new Seven Soldiers or Busiek Superman, so boo. But "Superman in the 80s"... um, maybe.

EX MACHINA SPECIAL #1 (OF 2)
Written by Brian K. Vaughan; Art by Chris Sprouse and Karl Story; Cover by Tony Harris

The superstar art team of Chris Sprouse and Karl Story (Tom Strong, Ocean) joins writer Brian K. Vaughan for an all-new, 2-part adventure from Mayor Mitchell Hundred's super-heroic past! At long last, the origin of Jack Pherson, the Great Machine's mysterious archenemy, is finally revealed in this perfect introduction for readers new to the world of Ex Machina.

Hmm!

Next! Wave!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 16 April 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Daredevil, X-Statix, X-Men, Nextwave, nice!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 16 April 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty good week on this end, too. Cap, New Avengers, Nextwave, X-Men, Dead Girl, and probably that Nova nonsense. I've picked up all the Annihilation books, and no reason to quit now. Not too crazy about it, but just barely solid enough to keep me coming back thus far. And I might pick up the Ex Machina special; I bought the first trade last week but haven't read it yet.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Monday, 17 April 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Just X-Statix for me, and maybe Ex Machina. And possibly a Love & Rockets trade.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 April 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

JLA Classified #20 - Last chance to read this before it turns to shit.
JSA Classified #11 - The first part of this story was very so-so. I'm giving it a chance to get good. It will disappoint me, and I'll keep buying it.
Justice League Unlimited Vol 2 Worlds Greatest Heroes TP - Cheapo (digest-sized prolly) GOOD ADVENTURE COMICS.
Justice League Unlimited Vol 3 Champions Of Justice TP - ditto.
Man-Bat #1 - maybe, the art looks good, but Man-Bat has never lived up to my intro to the character in Action Comics #600 when he was drawn by Mignola and was really, really ugly and terrifying and awesome.
Superman In The Eighties TP - Does this lean toward Post or Pre Crisis?
Captain America Vol 5 #17 - Grrrrrrowr!
Daredevil #84 - 12:1 Foggy's not dead.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 17 April 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, for the umpteenth time: Steve Engelhart + Justice League 8-Mile doesn't equal shit!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever, Vibe.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Also, JLA: C: Detroit cover art is just so ugly. Normally I like Zeck and Ordway, but not together!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

new avenge-o
cappo americo

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Birds of Prey #93 (despite myself I'm starting to adore this series)
Daredevil #84 (and then they rolled away the stone and FOGGY WASN'T INSIDE)
New Avengers #18 (perhaps there will be some plot this time)

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm quite impressed with the Gail Simone stuff I've been reading lately -- is the old BoP stuff worth catching up on? I love how her stuff doesn't really have any aspiration except to be a good yarn, if that's not damning with faint praise.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 17 April 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

(Sorry repetion of "stuff", which is even worse as I'm just shirking from editing my partner's PhD paper.)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 17 April 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

stuff it

EX MACHINA SPECIAL #1 (OF 2)

DAREDEVIL #84
NEW AVENGERS #18
NEXTWAVE AGENTS OF HATE #4
SPIDER-WOMAN ORIGIN #5 (OF 5)
X-STATIX PRESENTS DEAD GIRL #4 (OF 5)

Oblivious Lad. (Oblivious Lad), Monday, 17 April 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

Birds of Prey was mostly very weak before she took over--great concept, sloppy execution. Her first couple of storylines are sort of shaky, but by the one collected as "Sensei & Student," she'd gotten it a bit more together: there's some really entertaining stuff in there, esp. when Black Canary finds herself teaming up with the poisoner & international terrorist Cheshire, despite the fact that neither of them can even begin to trust the other one...

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 17 April 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure if I'm going to buy New Avengers when it comes out anymore. I think I'm going to switch to picking it up randomly when I have a bit of extra pocket money and I want a fix. That's how I started reading it, and should probably keep it that way.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 17 April 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

i'm worried that new avengers is increasingly directionless.

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Monday, 17 April 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

this Ex Machina special...how special is it? JUMPING ON??

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

i thought that last ex machina trade was a real dud :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

a very nicely-coloured dud tho

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

well, that's good enough for me. I'll spend that money on Buddle for Bladhaven.
My library actually has the first two trades IN LIBRARY and the third ON ORDER, AND the library is like two blocks from my comic shop, so I'll check it out fa free.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

DUD(E)!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

You should still check X-Ma(chi)n(a) eventually, Huk, though of course start from the beginning when it was under-read and still cool (i.e. when it was actually more focused storytelling-wise and more story-cliffhanger-oriented, not so much dominated by the West Wingesque wonkery going on right now).

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Bladder for Baltimore?

xpost, I will

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't anyone get their comics this week? IT'S DAREDEVIL WEEK FFS. Any way, smallest week since, well, last week. But last week at least had a big fat Showcase to make it feel like a real week. This week I got SevSoldiers Vol. 2 to pad the bag.

JLA Classified #20 - Turns out it's not the last chapter of this story after all. Sean Phillips inks JLGL again, with lovely results. I think this was orginally supposed to run in the proper JLA series before Identity/Infinite Crisis steamrolled STORYDOM. If it had run, it would most definitely been heralded as a return to form for the book, since it's VERY evocative of GM's JLA (especially the use of Batman in this ish). One the one hand, that's fun, on the other hand, it's kinda sorta more of the same (really good same, but same still). B
Captain America Vol 5 #17 - I can't decide if I like this art or not. I wasn't that big on Epting at the start of this series, but he grew on me, but this guy seems to approach a Bart Searsification. Still cracking good action adventure. B+
Daredevil #84 - Hot motherfuckin' damn! A+

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

my reactions are pretty similar to Huks, just move that + from Daredevil to Cap.

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty surprised by the ending of the current issue of Daredevil - doesn't that character have his own series? How can Brubaker get away with doing something major like that?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody read that character's other series?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

"that character" = punisher...?

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

SPOILERSPOILER (though how did they keep THAT under wraps while spilling the Foggy beans MONTHS early???)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Such a good series at the moment. I worry it will turn into a boring Bendis-style 22-part "epic", though.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

I really like that the issues of Brubaker's Daredevil feel like tv episodes rather than a chapter of a storyarc.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 21 April 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't seem like it's THAT major a development for the SPOILERSPOILERPunisher. And hey, it's the shortest way of getting into a prison, yes?

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 21 April 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but don't the other writers suddenly end up with a character who is in jail, forcing them to write stories about him being in jail?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 21 April 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

In jail, out of jail--you know, he's the Punisher, he goes where he wants. Dollars to donuts he breaks out as soon as he accomplishes what he's after. He's been in prison a few times in the last year or so, I think.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 21 April 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, he does seem to treat it like a rest home, almost. "Ah, I need a break from actually having to hunt down and pursue criminals. I think I'll go to jail. Its so much easier there."

Though I have to say, I did not see him coming and so that last page made me laugh with a strange joy at the prospect of his arrival in what is becoming a very crowded prison. How many non-superpowered killing machines can one facility hold?

David N (David N.), Saturday, 22 April 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, I guess this is what happens when you don't read any Punisher comics since 1988 or so.
