Weekly Roundup 5/20, whooo!

Seaguy #1 - new Grant Morrison makes me smile. It seems very "Silver Age superheroes meets Brave New World" at this point.

Human Target - Okay, the suprise ending shouldn't have been much of a surprise since its the singular trick of this series. However, I wasn't expected to be a one-shot and I sure as hell wasn't expecting it to turn out light-hearted and fun, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

Lucifer #50 - I've only started reading this book recently, but it seems like they would have done this before (it's an oversized one-shot about the beginning of Lucifer's rebellion). Nonetheless, it's really well-written, makes me want to check out the older trades (damn, that extended metaphor on the last page took some balls though, it just keeps going and going).

Runaways - Stuff keeps happening, which is good. I heard a rumor that it was getting cancelled, which would be unfortunate, but it would at least be nice to get some resolution first. The up-to-date pop culture references (Xbox, Rockstar games, etc.), ehhhh, sort of dud.

Wolverine #15 - Yeah, um, so there's a hot, hairy girl Wolverine, so now that they've fought AND gotten it on maybe some other stuff will happen.

Oh, I also got the first Sleeper trade, but I only read four pages before passing out after my gig last night.

He was a girl thousands of years ago and finally regenerated his Y chromosome! It's a prelude to this summer's "I'm the best and what I do, and what I do isn't very pretty, and also what I do is go into labor" multi-covered chromium limited edition Wolverine event.

(nb I have no idea)

What's wrong w/ up-to-date cult. references? They're 13-18 yrs old; what else are they gonna talk about? Burning bras? Tim Leary? Mussolini? Ponce de Leon?

I haven't gotten to the comic store yet and likely won't until this weekend (the girlfriend is in intensive language classes this summer, so Saturdays we blow off steam with the farmer's market, movie theater, & comic store). But boy am I looking forward to Lucifer #50. The trades are really worth picking up, it's one of those series where things will get introduced and then are followed up 30 issues later.

(That said, I read the first trade, then started getting the issues somewhere around #40 and gradually read the rest of the trades, and didn't feel particularly left out in the interim. So there's no rush.)

No, it makes perfect sense for the characters, it just seems like it won't age well (which is the part and parcel of pop culture and teenagers I guess, so that's fine I guess).

Actually, what bothered me more was the kid mentioning Xbox Live like he grew up with it (and it's only been around for like a year, right?).

Ha - beatnik ref's in Marvel Pop Art comix to thread! (I'm picturing the packed-powder Iceman wearing a beret and a Rollie Fingersesque moustache, for whatever reason).

And I have the same problem with real kids for that very reason. Damn punks.

Kids these days can do a lot of living on Xbox Live in a year.
