Owly: Or, How much story can you get when there are no words?

I got the first 3 Volumes from Amazon. I read through the first two in about an hour. It is sooooo cute and heartwarming and all the saccharine things everyone says about it. Has anyone else read it? It seems to me that Andy Runton must be very into ornathology and horticulture.

Having said that, I don't think there's all that much to the stories. Each volume has only 1 or 2 story arcs. Owly wants to help wormy get back home, Owly wants to build a birdhouse, Owly wants to help the hummingbirds. I suppose without words, you can't depict complicated emotions or show intricate events. Or can you? The only other non-word comics I've read was "Sshhhh!" by Jason and it seemed to tell so much more STORY to me. It seemed more mature, too.

I've only read the Free Comics Day Owly, but if I had a small child, I would get them Owly.

Seconded, hardcore. Read The Frank Book by Woodring. Wordless perfection. And I'm pretty sure that I'm not even exaggerating.

The bits I've read of Mister O are fantastastic. Approximatly 8064 times better than the bits I've read of Owly.

The System was okay I think, though Kuper's Eye of the Beholder strips are better. And the Gon stories are fun. I guess wordless comics are easier to do with animals.

Oh, and everyone should check out the Silent Month issues from Marvel. Thanks to the spectacular storytelling chops of most Marvel artists, there wasn't a dud in the bunch.

Nope, not a single one.

No, sir.

Thanks thanks thanks for all the suggestions. The Frank Book looks super trippy and best of all- it's in COLOR!

probably about 1/4 colour, 3/4 b&w. unimpeachable though. someone should post a link to Andy Konky Kru here.

Frank weirds me out a bit. Reminds me of a bad trip I had like ten years ago.

That's Woodring's appeal in a nutshell.
