DC in July

the solicits and covers are wherever you want them to be (ie, the internet) and they mostly suck.

However, the Catwoman cover is really, really great.

also, HOLY MOLEY, the Teen Titans Go! cover is the best cover EVER. (for a comic starring Beast Boy and Cyborg)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

My impression - from the first month's books, assorted previews and upcoming solicits - is that DC have completely blown it w.r.t. OYL.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah. But 52 looks good, and, hey, I'd rather read ONE comic every week than y'know, READ ALMOST ANYTHING ELSE FROM DC right now.
(exceptions: Superman titles seem to be holding; Blue Beetle seems to have bold ambitions and the talent to pull them off, ergo DOOMED BY CHRISTMAS; Robin has a Patrick Gleason cover)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm still enjoying some of the books, several of them in fact. But there's nothing radical or motivating going on, nothing which screams "hit".

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

And yes 52 looks good.

But recently I have been reading....indie comics.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I have been hearing about these Hindi comics.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Catwoman cover really is awesome. Kinda psyched about The All-New Atom; only sort of fearful about the new Justice League incarnation; surprised and weirdly pleased to see JSA end. The two new Garth Ennis books look horrible, and after the atrocity that is The Battle for Blüdhaven, I have almost no hope for Uncle Sam/Freedom Fighters.

Still impossibly excited about 52.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Two new Garth Ennis books? Bloody hell.

Agreem with everyone above, but the Superman relaunch has been pretty wonderful so far. Great art, too. If DC had any sort of distribution, no reason why it shouldn't be a "hit".

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, the Superman is good. My guess is that the Superman and Batman (less good) arcs will be pushed strongly when it comes to trades.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Also, classic for being the first time I've read the line "Ahh! Itching Powder!" in a comic since 80s Whizzer and Chips.

When DC's marketing strategy involves big push for Force of July and Freedom Fighters...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

We need visual reference.

Seriously, that Teen Titans Go cover is just, like, WOWSVILLE. Merely ginchy. I've gotta see if the other covers are as good as that.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

none of 'em are as brillo as that July issue, but this month's is pretty good:

who is Sean Galloway and why don't I have a big pile of comics by him?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

DC fucked up

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Green Lantern -8% (yes: minus)

hee hee.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really have the concentration to follow that. Does anyone have an idiot's four-word version of that article?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

retailers holding DC's bag

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

By going for headline-grabbing second printings and not overprinting their OYL titles, DC failed to meet demand and hence lost sales.

xpost

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, tha could be true, as I've see-bee-argh'd a couple things lately I would've bought, but they've been out of the store by 5pm on a Thursday.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Lone Cat & Cub anyone?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

exactly

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

wonderwoman stuff at n'rama

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

dodson sez he's trying to tone down the "sexiness" of ww; DC sez 'uh, do you know why we hired you?"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yup. There were a couple OYL titles I was willing to try out (which is a big deal, considering that I only ever buy continuity-free/lite DC stuff), but I've had the same problem as Chuck: the stuff is always sold out by late Wednesday afternoon. Between that and the cover price of 52 (a title that I definitely would've bought if it were more affordable), DC ain't gettin' no love from me anytime soon.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

honestly, you didn't miss much.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'm certainly getting that impression.

I guess I should point out that (besides buying Legion and Hellblazer regular-like and having a subscription to ASS) DC will, indeed, be getting love from me again once Morrison takes over Detective (or Batmang, whichever). Assuming my comic shop will have copies available for sale.

I know it hardly needs to be pointed out, but: are comic shops just about the most completely fucked business model ever?
