Which artists would you like to see do comic adaptations of which books?

Geoff Darrow to adapt China Mieville's Bas-Lag novels.

P. Craig Russell to adapt Vonegut's Sirens of Titan.

Mike Mignola to adapt Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials

Gregory Corso's Incredible Hulk!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Lark on Lovecraft.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

good call on the mignola!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Pullman would be better with a different artist for each world innit?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Good idea! Definately Mignola for Lyra's world, though.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Mignola for Lyra's world, Bolland for Earth, Sim and Gerhardt for the Spectre-world (mostly Gerhardt TBH), the ghost of Kirby for all the heaven stuff and Chris Ware for the land of the dead. Plus Sienkiewicz doing bears.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Glenn Fabry for the Mulefa?

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno if Fabry has it in him to draw a dowdy 40-something woman as lead character in his bit tho. How about...Gilbert Hernandez!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm... Charles Vess?

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile one of the worst comics I ever bought was an adaptation of Gene Wolfe's Shadow Of The Torturer.

xpost - Mike McMahon!

No wait KEVIN O NEILL! (remember Metalzoic?)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

O'Neill might do a good job on Gene Wolfe, actually (though Book of the New Sun would be a bitch to adapt).

By the way, Chris Ware for the land of the dead=some kind of insane genius.

alex ross for the heaven/god/metatron stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Incidentally, I meant fantasy in the 'fantasy football' sense in the thread title - non SF/fantasy books are welcome.

Bissette/Totleben for Dhalgren.

Steve Rude for the Illuminatus! trilogy.

Rick Geary on any Nabokov.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

what's the fantasy here, the adaptor or the adapted?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

presumably the combination of the two?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Just who would you like to see adapt which book of any genre - I shouldn't have brought fantasy into it.

x-post

Dave McKean to adapt Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

McKean on Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion.
Allred on Crying of Lot 49.
Sienkiewicz on Gravity's Rainbow.
Mignola on Ulysses!
Carla Speed McNeil on Mrs. Dalloway.

Trying to think up booky books that I like and coming up with the same favorites I've been listing for the past 5 years makes me realize I should probably read more and that I've never read any fun books.

"Stately, plump Abe Sapien..."

Rian Hughes to adapt Wodehouse.

Eddie Campbell to adapt William Boyd's The New Confessions

Alfredo Alcala drawing Heart Of Darkness -- he's great at all that claustrophobic jungle stuff.

David Simpson (David Simpson), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

(remember Metalzoic?)

unfortunately, yes.

How about "Pride & Prejudice", drawn by Rob Liefeld?

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

"But Mr. Darcy! I cannot marry a man with no feet, think of the scandal! In addition, your bossoms are most unnatural."

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Bossoms.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin O'Neill should do Dune

Kaluta for The Name of the Rose

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

Mike Mignola for The Count of Monte Cristo
Frank Espinosa for the collected works of Jules Verne

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

Art Adams could do a fine job on various H Ryder Haggard style Victorian tales of derring-do.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Burden on Ubu Roi.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

eight years pass...

Revive.

I remember a similar thread on the old Comics Journal forum. The only suggestions I remember were Corben doing Heart Of Darkness and P Craig Russell on Ayn Rand's books.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 02:29 (eleven years ago)

four years pass...

Picked up BALLADS with art from Charles Vess, writers like Neil Gaiman and Charles DeLint adapting folk ballads. The ballads are creepy as hell and considerable liberties are taken in adaptation, which is all to the good. The art is wonderful. The recommended discography at the end makes this book feel ten or twenty years older than it is ('97).

lukas, Friday, 22 March 2019 05:29 (six years ago)

I had an older version of this. I think Vess did multiple versions of some of these?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 22 March 2019 21:01 (six years ago)

Well shoot, you're right and now I want to read the version with Three Lovers.

lukas, Saturday, 23 March 2019 04:48 (six years ago)

I had two different versions of Alison Gross, might have even used completely different drawings by him.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 23 March 2019 10:15 (six years ago)

I think one was from Frank Frazetta Illustrated.
