Mignola for Lyra's world, Bolland for Earth, Sim and Gerhardt for the Spectre-world (mostly Gerhardt TBH), the ghost of Kirby for all the heaven stuff and Chris Ware for the land of the dead. Plus Sienkiewicz doing bears.

Meanwhile one of the worst comics I ever bought was an adaptation of Gene Wolfe's Shadow Of The Torturer.

four years pass...

Picked up BALLADS with art from Charles Vess, writers like Neil Gaiman and Charles DeLint adapting folk ballads. The ballads are creepy as hell and considerable liberties are taken in adaptation, which is all to the good. The art is wonderful. The recommended discography at the end makes this book feel ten or twenty years older than it is ('97).
