4a) John Stewart whups Hals ass x10000 because Hal isn't a schizophrenic and JOHN STEWART IS.

"Don't judge my madness by your sanity, brotha" says John as he manifests half a dozen personalities to take out Hal. The best bit being when John becomes SCARY WHITEFEAR GANGSTA in order to finish off Hal, who refuses to believe John could be such a creature and so LOSES LIKE A BEEEYOTCH because John totally can be a gangsta when the occasion demands, unlike Hal who says "I... DON'T... KNOOOOOOOW" when the black man asks him why he is A TOOL OF THE CAUCASIAN SYSTEM.

Superman shooting little (wanky) versions of himself out of his hands wot are better than him. Its the age old story of immasculation, made BIG with ickle supramen.

Pete (Pete), Saturday, 20 May 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

And then he tries to kill the small version. And succeeds. Suddenly he is remorseful after the fact. He is a super bastard.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Saturday, 20 May 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

that's the best superman story ever!

especially because everyone is so coy about it, i guess to avoid hurting supes's feelings... they keep awkwardly referring to it as "SUPERMAN'S NEW POWER. OH LOOK THERE'S SUPERMAN'S NEW POWER AGAIN. SUPERMAN KEEPS USING HIS NEW POWER."

My burning hatred of emoticons shouldn't detract from a lively debate on whether CapWolf is a rubbish idea or not.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 21 May 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I was having more or less this discussion on the FutureQuake board with Ed, afore it was hacked (seems okay now)... regarding the merits, or lack thereof, of Tomb of Dracula. So that's one item I would like to propose is actually a gold-plated turd saved only by The Dean's supreme artisty. ;-)

Ed mentioned the word 'genius', so this isn't completely off-topic here. I feel the words 'genius' and 'Marv Wolfman' are inherently incompatible.

_chrissie (chrissie1068), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Tomb of Dracula is a bit strange at the best of times. Either Dracula's weeping hysterically at a painting of Jesus as part of some hideously mixed-up attempt at theology or he's being killed FOR THE FINAL TIME and then coming back the very next issue.

Somebody obviously thinks it's genius, because it's got four Essentials now, but it's semi-decent at best. Occasionally rip-roaring but too often weighed down by its own self-importance.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Essentials seem to be assigned using a method I don't understand. How can Tomb of Dracula have four before the complete Lee/Kirby FF has been collected? How can the Avengers have 6 so far to the FFs 4, for that matter?

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

It's probably ease of getting hold of the film. Maybe some legal issues as well.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think it was Comics Should Be Good that had a recent item concerning the Showcase Presents reprints (specifically the Jonah Hex) and how it's unlikely we'll see any Showcase Presents from after 1976, because at that point creators had reprint royalties written into the standard contracts (thanks a lot Neal Adams), so it would be significantly more expensive for DC to reprint post-bicentennial comics. (though in some cases, DC may see this expense as worthwhile because they figure they'll sell a enough volume)
It's likely something similar was afoot at Marvel, and wasn't Wolfman E-in-C when he was writing TofD? So his contracts would have been considerably different than yr standard freelancer, and Marvel would probably have much easier/cheaper access to anything Wolfman did for them while under a mgt. contract.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

Reprint *fees* on top of royalties is the issue at DC. Marvel still don't pay royalties anyway, so no problems there!

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 22 May 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm afraid a big part of what bugs me about ToD is the theology, but as I am rabidly atheistic I can't say my viewpoint is particularly objective. What was worse was the late '90s, creator-owned version Wolfman & Colan did for Dark Horse -- a fresh chance to rescue the perfectly cool vampire concept from its Victorian, Christian trappings, but no, nothing's different! At all! (Except Drac's hairdo.)

Even casting aside my bias, it was just so totally lacking in imagination it defies belief...

_chrissie (chrissie1068), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

I know that reproduction issues play a part too - Marvel have said (sorry Matt P!) that they'll never do an Essential New Mutants because the Sienkiewicz issues would look so rub.
