Serious answer: the first 40+ issues of the most recent Flash series (written by Mike Baron & William Messner-Loebs) are nice!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Seconded.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

THere's a collection of "Greatest Flash Stories Ever" out, but I don't know what's in it, or what's the format (hardcover or paperback).
Is there a Seth Fisher Flash book?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Barry Allen's also great, though; John Broome, Gardner Fox, Carmine Infantino...And Wally West had Mike Baron, William Messner-Loebs and Mark Waid while Superman was being helmed by Dan Jurgens and Batman was suffering scripts by Doug Moench and Chuck Dixon. Even Zero Hour was pretty kind to Wally, being used to trigger Terminal Velocity and all that great stuff. Flash has always been very lucky with its creative teams, except for Johns' run, which I don't really like. And Paul Di'Anno or whatever its name is, I'm expecting for the worse.

i0dine, Monday, 22 May 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

FROM THE WRITERS OF THAT TV SERIES THAT WAS KIND OF BAD AND EMBARRASSING BUT YOU WATCHED ANYWAY BECAUSE OMG TINA McGEE.

I like a lot of Johns's Flash run (though, y'know, I hadn't read any comics for 13 yrs when I got into it, and, aw, I don't care, a lot of it was fun), the storyline where Flasher loses his memory and MINDWIPES THE WHOLE WORD was pretty cool, with v. nice (& uncharacteristically dark and moody for the Flash) Alberto Dose art, and Captain Cold was really sympathetic, and probably more interesting than Wally himself for a while there.

Showcase Presents the Flash will, eventually, kick all kinds of ass.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Huk, are you talking about thee Flash TV show that I think I watched??

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

God, you know, I guess it'd have to be Wally. But I haven't read that many Flash comics, and I basically just know Wally from old Justice League comics from the late 80s.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, that's not true, I actually read a couple years worth of Flash back in the early 90s. Was that Waid? Man, I barely remember that, but it's strange that it's coming back to me. I remember reading this one random issue by Messner-Loebs at some boring family function back when I was eight or nine, 1989?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I know it's Paul something, I know it's him and some other guy, I know both of them were the masterminds behind that kinda lame tv show, and I know it really can't be much worse than the finale by Cavalieri, but every time I think I've seen it all, somehow the world manages to surprise me.

i0dine, Monday, 22 May 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Well, if it makes you feel better, those old Flash tv series guys weren't DC's first choice. I am sworn not to ever speak of this, but if things had worked out with the writer who was supposed to do it, it probably would have been pretty cool.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

Howard Chaykin? (he wrote a few episodes of the TV series)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

You've broken my heart!!! Iodine from "good-new-flash-series"-Earth, enjoy it for me.

i0dine, Monday, 22 May 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll give the new Flash series a shot, just because I got the last Flash #1 fresh off the rack (I missed Justice League #1, and had to deal with not knowing what happened in it until 2 yrs ago!), but, I've gotta say, after the Cavalieri Finale, I kinda don't mind not reading the Flash anymore. If the new series is as good as Blue Beetle (the benchmark for post Infinite DC), I'll read it. If not, MORE MONEY FOR BEER.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 May 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

Man, what are people seeing in the new Blue Beetle series? I read the first two, and though the art was pretty nice, I thought it was totally dull.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

I like that there's a really menacing undertone to the Beetle scarab, like it's not some benevolent MAGICK RING that has a failsafe that will protect its wearer from mortal injury. That the new Beetle is really just a super-average kid (no weird family issues, not supersmart, not superbadass, just a plain, even dull, kid) who's in WAY OVER HIS HEAD. So far at least, it seems like the Scarab has its own agenda--though maybe I'm only enjoying that inasmuch as I never read the Alien Costume Spider Man (though I did read the Cosmic Powers Spider-Man)(BUT Ditko's Blue Beetle was just, 'oh, I got really good a drawing insect-themed acrobats, here's some more' so if the new Beetle is going to riff on something it might as well be Spidey). And most importantly, Cully Hamner rocks a totally badass and boss Guy Gardner.

THE ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER OF IRON MAIDEN DID NOT WRITE THE FLASH OK?

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
So are the early issues of the WallyWest Flash compiled anywhere?? i.e. the ones you guys are raving about upthread...

dave k, Monday, 19 June 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Compiled on a CD I have.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Compiled IN MY HEAD, SCHWARTZ!

John M. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

the Baron Flash introduced the idea of Wally as a likable, happy dude who inherited the tradition of bein rilly fast and had to eat a lot, right? cuz in Wolfman's TT, he was, and I'll paraphrase a phunny line of Huk's, "OH NOES, I WANNA BANG RAVEN/I WANNA GO TO COLLEGE/ SUPER-DUPER SPEED IS KILLING ME."

veronica moser (veronica moser), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

teenagers be whinin'

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

haha, well too bad i guess; hopefully they'll get around to compiling it someday... when i was a kid i read most of the markwaid run, i think, right at the heart of all the zerohour - speedforce stuff, but really liked it...

dave k, Monday, 19 June 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

That's pretty much ('round here, at least) considered to be the best of the run. The Baron year (I'm pretty sure he did exactly the first 12 issues--then Messner-Loebs took over, which was still good. Things didn't really get dull until Identity Crisis) is just loaded with awesomeness, though. Vandal Savage, speedsters everywhere, Wally's poor, then he's rich, then he's poor, his mother moves in, he has an affair with a married woman (not his mom, though), married woman's husband tries to kill him, the Internet Strikes! (Kilg%re), Chunk!, My Dad Is A 5 Billion Yr Old Robot Who Wants to Kill Me, AND Juicy Steve Lightle covers.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

are those collected anywhere?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

K-rection: Mike Baron lasted to #14, and the resolution of the Vandal Savage plot.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

xpost, sadly, no.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I just watched that JLU episode all about the flash where he's all chummy and lowkey with his villains (y0ut&be, ahem) - great episode plus he gets to mack on linda!

dave k, Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

Have they have dealt with the fact that the Flash must have super hot drum chops?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

have YOU dealt with it?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

I read a recent (post-GM) JLA comic where Flasher told John Stewart (actually maybe it was a pre-Rebirth GL comic?) that he likes Rush and called them Math Rock.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

have YOU dealt with it?

Clearly not! Fuck a Flash.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

Good luck trying to pin one down!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

I hope the new Flash is Extraño!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

will someone spoil the identity of the new flash in wee text or whatever they do here? it looks way too shitty to read but you know, nerd curiosity eats away at me

Adrienne Begley (sparklecock), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

also JESSIE QUICK!!!!!!!! was the best flash (well not really)

Adrienne Begley (sparklecock), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

What of LADY FLASH!!!?!??! It sounded like a bathroom cleaner made for girls and also wasn't that the flash who was created by DRUG ADDICTION and then totally turned into a HYPER HO on Wally... well, what of Lady Flash indeed. What of Jenny Quick more like. What became of her?

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

DON'T WORRY, THE NEW FLASH ISN'T SHOWN IN THE NEW FLASH COMIC.
DO WORRY, THE COMIC STINKS.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

"THE NEW FLASH ISN'T SHOWN IN THE NEW FLASH COMIC."

Never a good sign, when the eponymous figure can't be bothered to appear in his or her own #1. Maybe he shoulda asked us to believe in him, like Barry Allen did once.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ha - the best comic of the past year featuring a speedster was about some self-centered brat w/ a persecution complex turning into a fucked-up time-traveling Timothy Leary.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Action Philosophers?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

SON OF M (now with bonus warmongering!) Might not be worth buying if you're not invested in the surrounding mythos (cf. the Inhumans, the NO MORE MUTANTS boogling), but definitely worth a Bordersing / CBRing.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit, this new Flash #1 is the worst comic I've read since I was like 12, or something. I don't know what's more awful, the art or the dialogue. I found myself seriously rethinking my renewed comic habit while reading this piece of shit. Maybe I could take up golf, instead.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 29 June 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

It was very bad. My favourite bit was them arbritrarily aging Bart four years, so he's not a kid any more! So he can't be Kid Flash! But no powers.

(The story it is trying to tell seems to be very similar to the one in the new Superman arc, which it does really, really well and this just underline show well it does it.)

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 29 June 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

It's a hit!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 June 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's not even bad in a way that makes me want to keep reading it even it were somehow magically available for free, like through the internet or something.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 29 June 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

You know when there's a tv show you love, but that your friends think looks awful, but you can talk them into watching an episode with you anyway, and you're all excited because they're gonna realize how good Gilmore Girls or Veronica Mars or whatever is, and then the episode is just abnormally inconceivably awful, and your friends' opinions are reinforced, and you get all embarrassed and feel like a big dope and start to question whether the show actually is any good afterall? That's exactly how I'd feel if my non comics-reading friends read this issue of Flash. Complete embarrassment, and a potential rethinking of my hobby.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 29 June 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

WE'VE GOT A BLEEDER! NURSE, GET ME 10 CCs OF ALL STAR SUPERMAN AND SERGIO ARAGONES' SOLO IN A DRIP STAT! WE'RE LOSING HIM PEOPLE!

Dr. Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Even the comic book shop guy sort of hinted that the new Flash sucked. I was going to add it to my pull list but instead I got some gay porn and I am not even gay.

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Sunday, 2 July 2006 07:01 (nineteen years ago)

Come on, SOMEBODY must have liked this!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

Who would have thought we would live to see an era where Aquaman was an intrinsically better comic than the Flash!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)
