1. That you are also a Trekkie.

2. That you still live with your parents.

3. that i want to talk about vampires

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

4. THINKS I LIKE MARVEL COMICS

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

3 is more what I'm talking about - I find in this day and age people are generally accepting of you not being a sad virgin loser, but they still tend to think that you're totally indiscriminate and will like anything vaguely sci-fi or horror related - this thread was inspired by a very close friend of mine (who's known me for ten years!) thinking I was hugely into Star Trek based on no other evidence than the fact I read comics.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

5. That liking comics = liking all comics, and that I'm open to any comics-related discussion. It's like running into someone with an iPod and saying, "Oh, hey! You listen to music! You must love Bonnie Raitt! Let's talk about her, yay!"

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

Can I like Star Trek a lot and not be a Trekkie?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

No, and you also must live with your parents and be a virgin.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

:(

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

There are three levels of liking star trek.

1. Liking to watch it.

2. Liking to watch it, knowing too much about it, possibly having read some books.

3. Wearing plastic ears.

That I like animation. I really don't like 99% of all animation I've ever seen.

I think you're skipping a level of Star Trek appreciation.

I am an embarassment to my race.

That I draw the little pictures.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

9) That you're a goth (especially if you like fantasy/horror comics). Or listen to metal.

To be fair, I think there's is a big overlap on sci-fi/horror/fantasy/comics/roleplayer/goth crowd, which (for me at least) has also the side effect of dissing certain comics (Sandman, Elfquest, etc.) because of their fans.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

The fans are just the icing on those particular cakes.

10. That I give a shit about manga

Laurah (laurah), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, in terms of assumptions, what I find funnier is the fact that I work at a comic book store, and at least once a day someone walks up to me and asks me whether or not I read comic books. Umm...?

Laurah (laurah), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

the manga thing is sooooo true - fuck that stuff

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

It's almost worse when the other person is ALSO a comic fan (like the dude next to me in line for X3 who wanted to nitpick old comics, appreciate Emma Frost's costume amirite, etc.).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Warlock was at a special superhero movie screening recently, and was hobnobbing with one of the stars, and the star was like, "oh, you like comics too? I just love Hush."
And then Warlock, who wanted to polite, threw up on the star's shoes.

Warlock Magazine (Warlock Magazine), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Er, what? Do you talk about yourself in third person, or is this some sort of a story?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Try to imagine it in the voice of Gollum.

Laurah (laurah), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

what I find funnier is the fact that I work at a comic book store, and at least once a day someone walks up to me and asks me whether or not I read comic books. Umm...?

The biggest comic store in Finland is owned by a woman who must be over almost 60 now, and I remember finding it weird buying my first Vertigo collections from this granny-like person who looked more like a librarian or something. But in reality she's a comics veteran, who has translated a whole bunch of classic series into Finnish ever since the early eighties.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know about the US and the UK, but in Finland it seems like manga and other comics have very different, almost separate readerships - manga fans seem to be mostly teenage girls who don't much care about other comics, in fact I'm not even sure if they count them as part of the same thing. I guess this could be read as a sign of maturation of comics as a medium - just because you like romantic comedies doesn't mean you should like action films.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's pretty much the same in the US, Tuomas. There are manga readers and there are comics readers and the overlap between the two isn't all that large.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

11. That I want to talk about Optic Nerve (fucking college kids.)

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

This weekend my wife and I found ourselves surrounded by anime cosplayers at the Prudential Center, a mall/office building/hotel/convention center place. Apparently there was some big anime convention going on. We were kicking back at the food court when like fifty dudes with six-foot cardboard and tinfoil swords came parading about. There were also like 15-year-old girls wearing nothing but wings and underwear and hats with animal ears. My wife, not a comics fan, just assumed that I knew who every character was. The only two I recognized were Mario and Luigi. Even if she doesn't quite understand my comics lust, I'd at least hope my wife would know enough to understand where the line is drawn in regard to obsessive nerdliness.

12. That I collect the kind of non-comic crap that litters Forbidden Planet (e.g. action figures, Magneto helmets, Buffy posters, etc.)

18. That I fall in love with any girl that speaks to me.

19. You have some interest in weird board games, card games, tabletop games with bizarre pewter figurines that people paint with painful detail, or pencil-and-paper role playing games.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Laurah officially first ILX poster to make use of "oh, (x)" combination without resorting to wrinklepawning since the meme started? I envy her self-control.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Saturday, 3 June 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

That actually applies to me. Or, I do read a lot of non-fiction, but not too many novels these days. Comics satisfy my need for fiction mostly.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 3 June 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

I was gonna repost the numbered bits of this thread under the title "Things that people correctly assume about you because you are a comic fan" but, y'know, I decided against it.

Who else would put up with my obsessive love of comics. my msn is under tomatosauce6808@hotmail.com
