The Inhumans

On a strange whim, I checked it out from the pubic ibrary though with tremendous trepidation, because it smacked of MOMENTOUSLY IMPORTANT STORYTELLING and had an Alex Ross-scribed intro.

But dammit if this Paul Jenkins isn't an incompetent writer, and that Jae Lee actually isn't (anymore?) a Jim Lee clone! In fact Jae's inks often bordered on that trendy-arty-cool blocky shadows style inspired from Sienkiewicz/McKean.

And Black Bolt = cool name + cool costume design (minus the silly wings though) + cool powahs!

Not exactly pants-shaking, but not the über-dud I anticipated.

it's not an uber dud? I must rush out and buy this one.

It's excellent! Lockjaw is on point! And Jae Lee never was a Jim Lee clone! The disinformation schmear campaign MUST STOP NOW!

Duly noted! Jae is like the only artist who ever paid attention to drawing men's lips.

Jae Lee has always rocked from what I remember.

The only reason I didn't buy this mini when it came out is because The Inhumans bore all shades of living shit out of me. The creative team was pure butter.

There's a character named NEIFI i.e. HOW COULD I NOT LIKE THIZ?

I always liked the Inhumans - Black Bolt is an old favourite, who I think has been badly underused in the Marvel Universe - he's one of their most powerful characters, and hardly ever gets into the major league stuff.

Allow me to show my ignorance of the medium-old-school -- the Inhumans were around for a while?

And also let me revise my original evaluation: the writing is typically quite good (the narration of Lockjaw's thoughts is a high point of prose composition in Literature), and the art often marvelous.

Inhumans been kickin' it since FF #40ish (when Lee / Kirby hottness was undeniable) - Medusa was one of the original cats in the Frightful Four!

Here's a passage of nice nice prose: "Once, not so long ago, you [Black Bolt] stood at the edge of infinity. And there, you faced the galaxy-collector known simply as Vortex. An impossible speck of nothing, standing against a being of cosmic proportions, you looked into Vortex's eyes, as if preparing to use your voice... And the creature blinked."

Nice!

That reads like Jamie Delano in the old days, when he overwrote every issue of Hellblazer. Wanting soooo bad to be Alan Moore.

David Nolan (David N.), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Given Moore's old skool penchant for ornate verbosity (see Swamp Thing, especially near the end of his run), I think JD might've just been amicably aping the guy.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

He made a career early on out of such "aping"....he took over Captain Britain and wrote it in Moore's style, with Moore's characters. Then did the same on Hellblazer. I mean this in a good way, sort of. I always enjoyed his work a lot, especially 2020 Visions...

David Nolan (David N.), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

He was mates with Alan Moore, it wasn't just someone copying him, and Alan didn't seem to mind - but yes.
