because there has been none thus far (and Huk referenced it elsewhere)…

happened upon them randomly on Cartoon Network; mostly shown at very inconvenient times, like 10:30, Saturday night (don't have tivo).

complete season of season 1 of JL is out on DVD; second is out later this month. Bought bootlegs of first two seasons of JLU. The third and final one has been broadcast recently.

anyway: This show is fucking great! scripting is so crisp and often touching that anyone would be able to appreciate it, but has tons of treats for the fanboys. each show has TONS of characters I never thought would hit tv.

so: does anyone else like it? I think virtually any one on this board would dig it muchly.

also: Howard Stern is talking about gay batwoman and Alex Toth right now…

The JLU Question is clearly the most direct precedent for the 52 version.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've been watching/rewatching the DCU cartoons over the last couple of months. Batman, which I remember loving a decade ago, doesn't really hold up that well. Superman is a bit better. JL, which I never watched before, is quite good. I've only seen the first season thus far, but I've heard really good things about subsequent seasons. And I'm inclined to believe them, based on what I've seen.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

I have watched an awful lot of the Diniverse stuff and am a big'ol fanboy about it. JLU is definitely the pinnacle achievement of the various series, especially the penultimate season with Waller and Luthor as the main villains.

Keywords: revenge, knife, granddaughter, demonic-possession, rock-star, eel (Aus, Tuesday, 6 June 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I haven't seen much of the final season (aside from the sweeeet Viking Prince episode), but the Waller/Luthor season-long arc was pretty boss.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

Very classic. I like the "justice League" episode where they team up with the Justice Society.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

with the real Justice Society? or with the alternate universe Justice Society analogs?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i think DRF means the Justice Guild, an analog for the JSA. Timm and Dini were not permitted to use the JSA: in the DVD they talk about that episode and how the omnipotent kid is sposed to be Roy Thomas.

the epigraph of that show is a dedication to Gardner Fox—brought a tear to my eye.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

nerd

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

JL/JLU are basically the best cartoons ever. I can't believe they cancelled it. I guess there's gonna be new Legion of Superheroes and Doom Patrol shows though, to fill the void of this and Teen Titans being done.

Occam, Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

really? I heard about the Legion one, but the Doom patrol? wow!

isn't Legion fandom s'posed to be real weird?

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Legion is pretty bizarre to start with...

Keywords: revenge, knife, granddaughter, demonic-possession, rock-star, eel (Aus, Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

A DOOM PATROL cartoon??? Holy shit!

yeah, i think DRF means the Justice Guild, an analog for the JSA. Timm and Dini were not permitted to use the JSA: in the DVD they talk about that episode and how the omnipotent kid is sposed to be Roy Thomas.

Yeah, that's the ep. I found it rather moving *superman sadface*

JLU sorta breaks the mould of previous DC adaptations like "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League": the thing about those was the lack of excessive continuity allowed the writers to just come up with great, classic meat & potatoes superhero stories, and the DCU references were always just a bonus for us geeks - that is to say, you could play either of those series to a kid with zero knowledge of the DCU and they'd enjoy it. I adore "Justice League Unlimited", but spotting the references seems to play a much larger part in the enjoyment of that - I have no idea how a non-DC aficionado would react to it.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not a DC aficionado and I thought "JLU" rivalled the most recent iteration of the X-Men cartoon franchise in awesomeness.

Dan (Roxor) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ok so I checked around a bit and the Legion cartoon is premiering in September, but the Doom Partol one looks to be still up the air. Don't wanna get anybody too excited.

Occam, Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

I assume the chances of it being the "real" Doom Patrol are pretty much nil anyway. Ah, but we can dream..

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

as far as ILC is concerned, is the "real" Doom Patrol the Morrison Meta-Patrol?

cuz if you mean the original iteration, there was Teen Titans show I caught where Mento leads the team against the Brain and Mallah. maybe that's what it would be.

I'm dling the series right now, and I'm totally lost: Is that Hawkgirl's face, or it a mask?

sLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

From what I can remember, she wears a mask during the original Justice League series and forgoes it when things get UNLIMITED. Maybe it's a symbol of her liberation from the relationship shackles of John Stewart - I dunno.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

She loses the mask during the "Starcrossed" multi-episode story.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

She sorta goes all "Diana Prince" in UNLIMITED.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Wings aren't very undercover though.

(In the cartoon does she "wear the wings" or are they part of her? Cos I think it is the later but it is the former in the comics innit.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

The wings are, I recall, a part of her.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like she realised the mask wasn't really going to aid her in the quest for a secret identity eh?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the cartoon seems to make wings integral to Thanagarosity.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hawkgirl channeling G-Arrow.

sLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

That's my new ringtone.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

watched the second season on DVD: that shit be fanboy porno.

New Gods! Thanagar! a touching Solomon Grundy/Hawkgirl friendship! Ultra Humanite is nice to little kids at X-mas time! A lonesome Vandal Savage sez to a time-displaced Superman, "so! you wanna come over to my place?"

again, almost wept at seeing my childhood obsessions being explored in such an elegant manner—my girlfriend, who does not know who Modok is, could watch 'em and dig 'em.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

"my girlfriend, who does not know who Modok is"

My favorite MODOK fact is that the scientists who built him (and were later murdered by him) were named George Clinton and William Collins. No word on whether they used the nicknames "Star Child" and "Bootsy."

there should be Modok thread, should there not? he is, after all, a giant head.

here is a good example of why the show is so, so excellent.

I'm up through the "Superman IS Russel Crowe in Gladiator" twofer, and my halfway verdict: decent, with occasional excellence, but suffers a serious (albeit understandable) lack of BATMAN.

I just watched a bunch of these, in no particular order - which was a bit confusing but I'm lazy - but by God this show is pretty awesome. The unlimited ones are way way better.

Oh, and though I'm generally aware of JL stuff, this is my first real exposure to any of it proper. I mean - I know who the Justice League are, but I don't think I've ever read a Justice League comic or anything.

The first thing that struck me was "Whoa, these guys are really effing stuff up" merely in the average amount of destruction caused in yr bog standard FITE. And also just how funny it is.

"Lex Luthor is pleased!"

Just saws the JL season 2 episodes with the GLC and Keith David as 3-eyed freak messiah, and WOW. Talk about some space opera!!

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

The fact that I could walk into a Target and buy a Golden Age Shining Knight doll right now is kinda weird.

I caught the series finale of JLU a few weeks ago. It's the first time I'd ever seen the show. It's amazing and kinda ridiculous how many obscure characters they squeezed in there.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

Having never seen an episode, I should have the full collection by tomorrow night.
Does the quality vary much from season to season?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 3 November 2006 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Just judging by the jump from JL season 1 to 2 so far, the differences are profoumd, with S2 being a huge improvement and departure. S1 is closer to your standard Timm cartoon series as far as look and stories, though not as consistently awesome. S2 has been loads more operatic and INTENSE -- Darkseid & New Genesis both appear in the premiere story!

While I'm at it:

SEASON 1
Secret Origins: B-
In Blackest Night: C+
Enemy Below: C
Paradise Lost: B
War World: B-
The Brave and the Bold: A
Fury: C
Legends: B+
Injustice For All: A+ (Ultrahumanite ♥ PBS!)
A Knight of Shadows: B
Metamorphosis: B-
The Savage Time: B+

SEASON 2
Twilight: A
Tabula Rasa: B
Only a Dream: B
Maid of Honor: B-
Hearts and Minds: A++! Does for me what Star Wars does for nerds.

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 3 November 2006 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Because nerds can't watch this?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm no nerd.

Wow - I'm currently in thrall to JL season two. I've been racing through the DVD set over the past week - it's kinda astonishing the way the writers manage to pull off such intensity within an only-occasionally convoluted, kid-friendly context.

MOST MEMORABLE "HOLY S#@T, IS THAT AWESOME!" MOMENT OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD:

Batman's "Gentlemen - it's been an honor" in "Starcrossed".

R Baez, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

damn! makes me wanna watch 'em again (am away from my crib)…

Veronica Moser, Monday, 24 September 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

Wait till you see "Epilogue"! If you're like me and have seen just about every DCAU joint ever made, then you will go B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

Just an FYI once you get to JLU season two: the DVD messes up the order to the four-part finale. The proper order has "Hunter's Moon" before "Question Authority," but the DVD has them reversed.

jlu is on netflix, i've been streaming first season, SUCH a blast. i knew the question was in it but amazed (and amused) at how big a role he plays. somehow this manages to not only do what the comics, etc SHOULD be trying to do it also manages to better what the comics, etc ARE actually trying to do.

both series are really good. kinda bummed at how violent they can be otherwise I would watch them with my daughter
