Somebody names a comic property to be made into a movie, specifying a director/writer and year. The rest of us cast it.

The Spirit - 1948. (Dir. Alfred Hitchcock)

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

Killraven, 1977, Orson Welles.

XPOST DAMNATION ARRRRGH

Orson Welles as the Octopus.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

OK, this sound interesting...

SHADE, THE CHANGING MAN (2008)
D: Michel Gondry
W: Charlie Kaufman/Peter Milligan

CAST OF CHARACTERS:
LENNY SHAPIRO
RAC SHADE (sensitive/likable/indecisive)
RAC SHADE II (impulsive madman)
ROGER THE GHOST
KATHY GEORGE
MILES LAIMLING (or similar arrogant/ineffectual representation of a creative figure)
SHIMMY
PANDORA
LILLY
PLUS whoever else you want to add.

You should see my notes for ENIGMA! I'd bring that up, but there's no way anyone's stealing my ideas for that...

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

The Spirit - Buster Crabbe, with a dye job and a good suit.
That Guy With The Buzzard - Boris Karloff.
Gerhardt Schnobble - Danny Kaye
Dolan - Bob Hope
Ellen Dolan - Veronica Lake
Officer Sam Klink - Gregory Peck
P'Gell - Ida Lupino
Ebony - A WOODEN PUPPET ANIMATED BY STRINGS

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

The Spirit - 1948. (Dir. Alfred Hitchcock)

Denny Colt/the Spirit - Robert Mitchum
Commish Dolan - Ken Niles
P'Gell - Jane Greer
Ellen - Virginia Huston
The Octopus - Kirk Douglas

you may be noticing a trend here.

My first thought for the Spirit was Dana Andrews. Bob Hope as Dolan is pretty funny. BUT OMG VERONICA LAKE AS ELLEN, INSTANT BONER.

xpost hmmm, Mitchum? That bionic baritone would mess with my head.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

tsa joek. Surely you've seen "Out of the Past"?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

"No-one could have believed that in the first days of the 21st Century, the martians would come back to tear some shit up. And nobody could have believed that the fetish folk of LSD land would totally kill them with shurikens. The chances of Killraven actually happening are a million to one AND STILL U WILL CUM!!?!"

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Also, surely if Hitchcock made "The Spirit" in 1948 he'd cast Cary Grant as Colt. He couldn't help himself, I figure.

Killraven, 1977, Orson Welles.

Killraven - uh, Jan-Michael Vincent? (ducks, runs)
M'Shulla - Yaphet Kotto
Carmilla Frost - Jane Seymour
Hawk - Dustin Hoffman
Old Skull - Frederic Forrest (did anyone see his 1974 tv movie "Larry"?)
Skar -
Volcana Ash -

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never seen "Out of the Past," but I just looked it up and then added it to my Netflix queue.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

It was remade as "Against All Odds" but don't hold that against it.

Also, for a larf, maybe someone wants to take a whack at

L'esprit - 1958 (dir. Jean Pierre Melville)

I would just be showing my ignorance, so I'll pass on that one.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

R. Baez, I'm not ignoring you, I've just never read Shade.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

That's okay - I picked SHADE because it was such an unlikely choice for a comic-to-film adaptation.

ALSO: Yes, any Hitchcock/Spirit adaptation in the late 40s would indeed have to take Cary Grant in the lead role as a given.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

It's been a long time since I read shade. I was trying to come up with something, but Lenny is just impossible.

Elektra: Assassin, 2006 (Dir. Tony Scott)

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've yet to read ELEKTRA ASSASSIN, but I like to imagine Nick Nolte as Stick. Dunno why.

ALSO: My choice for Charlie Kaufman as the scribe of my SHADE movie, 100%, was partly because I think he nailed Lenny so well w/ Maxine in BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. Keener's a few years too old for Lenny now, of course...

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

If Hitchcock made The Spirit a few yrs later...OMG JIMMY STEWART!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

I can't see Jimmy Stewart spanking Ellen...

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Have you seen Rear Window?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Heh, okay.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 10 June 2006 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

Dave always wanted, around the time of Animated Cerebus, for him to be voiced by George C Scott.

Either way, it would have to be Warwick Davies wearing the bunny suit.
