When Limited Characters Work

Ptee said this on another thread: "I prefer [Shulkie] to any Hulk comic I have read, and think on the whole the Hulk is quite limited."

Which got me to thinking about when the Hulk DID work. Accepted widsom sez the PAD run was when Hulk smashed @ his best, thanks in large part to a strong supporting cast (tho I say this as a bro that had no problem w/ the Parthenon), as well as bucking the status quo (cf. Mr. Fixit). The strong-support thing is also key in making Greg Pak's Planet Hulk stuff highly readable (HI IAN!), tho Pak is pretty much using the Silver Age style Hulk (savage, wily, semi-literate).

So, your mission, should you choose to do something besides work today: which characters are seemingly one-trick ponies, and when (if ever) did they whoop that trick?

I am reading Essential Hulk No. 1, AND Planet Hulk and enjoying both! Howev, my fav (non-Zombie) Hulk moment might be that issue of Thing where Grimm fights Infinite Hulk robots.

Galactus? A pretty one-note concept, but it's some kind of crazy cosmic jazz note that goes on for eternity.

Green Arrow's one-note? I'd wager he's at least as flexible as, say, Captain America.

Ditto actually all of those characters. A lot of them (Gardner / Green Arrow) are heroes who come to it from a different angle: probably political viewpoint. Gardner's cynical Republicanism is not contrary to heroism nor is GA's millitant wet idiot socialism, but they put an interesting spin on it. Nightwing is a classic: not only is he the definitive sidekick BUT he is the definitive sidekick wot grew up (adolesence incarnate!). SNIKT is clearly more than one note (proved however by the filums). AA - well okay, a walking signt gag, but with PATHOS.

The Punisher! - He punishes
The Watcher! - He watches
